Serotype distribution and antimicrobial resistance of invasive Streptococcus pneumoniae isolates among Croatian adults during a fifteen-year period (2005-2019)
CONCLUSIONS: The incidence of invasive pneumococcal disease in adults is highest in patients ≥65 years of age. Penicillin susceptibility, increased exposure and macrolide resistance were mostly associated with serotypes 14 and 19A. PCV13 and PPV23 provide very high serotype coverage. Future studies should evaluate the effects of the 10-valent vaccine, introduced in the Croatian National Immunization Program in June 2019, on serotype distribution and antibiotic resistance rates.PMID:35505649 | PMC:PMC9086820 | DOI:10.3325/cmj.2022.63.156

Trends in admissions, morbidity and outcomes at Red Cross War Memorial Children's Hospital, Cape Town, 2004 - 2013.
Conclusion. Paediatric in-hospital mortality decreased consistently over a decade, despite an overall increase in admissions. Pneumonia and diarrhoea admissions decreased markedly over a 6-year period, but remain the most important causes of hospitalisation. PMID: 28281427 [PubMed - in process]

Association between prescription of long-term systemic glucocorticoid therapy associated measures and prescriber's medical speciality.
CONCLUSION: Adjuvant measures to long-term glucocorticoid therapy are heterogeneously prescribed. The prescriptions depend largely on the medical specialty of the prescribing physician. PMID: 30683427 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

SARS-CoV-2-Na ïve Korean Children and Adolescents Hospitalized With COVID-19 in 2021
CONCLUSION: Despite its similar severity among most SARS-CoV-2-naïve children and adolescents, the delta variant may affect COVID-19 severity in those with high-risk underlying medical conditions. Underlying conditions, particularly obesity, may cause severe COVID-19 in children and adolescents, warranting strong consideration for vaccinating high-risk children.PMID:36325607 | DOI:10.3346/jkms.2022.37.e303

Rates of pneumonia among children and adults with chronic medical conditions in Germany
Conclusions: An increased risk for all-cause pneumonia in German children and adults with a spectrum of medical conditions persists in the era of widespread pneumococcal vaccination, and pneumonia risk in persons with ≥2 at-risk conditions is comparable or higher than those with high-risk conditions.

Text message reminders for vaccination of adolescents with chronic medical conditions: A randomized clinical trial.
CONCLUSION: Plain text message vaccine reminders appear to have a positive effect compared to educational ones in the short-term and for certain families. TRIAL REGISTRATION: NCT02231957 (www.clinicaltrials.gov). PMID: 28736201 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Vaccination Coverage of Adolescents With Chronic Medical Conditions
Conclusions Pockets of undervaccination and missed opportunities exist among adolescents with CMCs. Greater, more timely influenza vaccination suggests that optimal vaccination of high-risk adolescents is possible.

Incidence and Risk of Pneumococcal Pneumonia in Adults with Distinct Underlying Medical Conditions: A Population-Based Study
ConclusionOld age, immunocompromising conditions and chronic pulmonary/respiratory disease are major risk factors for pneumococcal pneumonia in adults. Our data underline the need for better prevention strategies in these persons.

Antimicrobial Susceptibility Trends of < em > Streptococcus pneumoniae < /em > by Age Groups Over Recent 10 Years in a Single Hospital in South Korea
CONCLUSION: Erythromycin and ceftriaxone resistance rates and the MDR rate of S. pneumoniae significantly increased during the recent 10 years; the trends in individual antimicrobial resistance rates significantly differed between the age groups. This study indicates the need for caution when using ceftriaxone as an empirical antimicrobial against pneumococcal infections.PMID:33779084 | DOI:10.3349/ymj.2021.62.4.306
