Impact of Reverse Septal Flap on Morbidity of Nasoseptal Flap Reconstruction of Skull Base Defects
CONCLUSION: The use of an RSF to limit donor site morbidity of the NSF was shown to significantly decrease the proportion of patients who reported nasal deformities and did not show a significant difference in patient-reported sinonasal outcomes. Given these findings, RSF should be considered whenever an NSF is used for reconstruction.PMID:36991310 | DOI:10.1177/19458924231166801

Outcomes of Frontal Sinus Stenting With Steroid Impregnated Microsponge Versus Steroid-Eluting Implant
CONCLUSION: FSO patency for both stents was similar, although TICP had significantly lower costs per unit. Additional comparative trials may be helpful for guiding clinicians on the appropriate clinical situations for the use of these devices.PMID:37408359 | DOI:10.1177/19458924231186901

Fewer People Are Sensitive To Gluten Than Commonly Believed
By Julie Upton for U.S. News It seems as if everyone is going to great lengths to avoid gluten, a protein found in wheat, barley, rye and many processed foods. Are there real health benefits associated with going gluten-free, or is it just another passing fad? A recently published study in the journal Digestion found that 86 percent of individuals who believed they were gluten sensitive could tolerate it. Individuals with celiac disease, a hereditary autoimmune condition that affects about 3 million Americans, or roughly 1 percent of the population, must avoid gluten. Those with extremely rare wheat allergies must also r...

Prevalence of eosinophilic esophagitis in patients with gastroesophageal reflux symptoms: A cross-sectional study from a tertiary care hospital in North India
ConclusionIn this hospital-based study from northern part of India, prevalence of EoE in patients with GERD was 3.2%. EoE should be considered as a diagnostic possibility, especially in those with history of allergy, no-response to PPI, and absolute eosinophil count of ≥250/cumm.

Clinical parameters influencing the results of anterior rhinomanometry in children
ConclusionsThe study demonstrates that rhinomanometry can be applied in the pediatric population for objective evaluation of nasal obstruction and for determining the effects of decongestant nose drops. The highest correlation was found between nasal flow and children ’s body height, children’s age and status following adenoidectomy. The correlation between nasal flow and clinically/endoscopically determined degree of nasal obstruction was lower. However, definition of normal flow values for particular age groups is challenging since the results showed high v ariation and standard deviation. Yet with regard to individu...

Laryngeal findings and acoustic changes in light cigar smokers.
Abstract UNLABELLED: The aim of this prospective study was to look at the laryngeal findings and acoustic changes in light cigar smokers in comparison to nonsmokers, in the setting of a voice clinic. A total of 22 cigar smokers and 19 nonsmokers used as controls were enrolled in the study. Demographic data included age, number of years smoking, number of cigars per week, history of allergy, and history of reflux. The confounding effects of allergy and reflux were accounted for in the control group. Subjects underwent laryngeal endoscopy and acoustic analysis. On laryngeal endoscopy, the most common laryngeal findi...

Lymphoid hyperplasia of the colon and its association with underlying allergic airway diseases
Conclusions Our results indicate that lymphoid hyperplasia in the large intestine may be associated with allergic airway diseases rather than with food allergies; thus, its presence may be useful to detect patients with underlying airway hyperreactivity.

Characterisation of patients with idiopathic olfactory dysfunction and plan for clinical follow-up.
CONCLUSIONS: Patients suffering from idiopathic OD were predominantly females with a long symptom duration. Only few of these patients suffered from allergies or sino-nasal pathologies. Patient history, the Sino-Nasal Outcome Test and threshold discrimination identification scores from the Extended Sniffin Sticks test are the most valuable clinical tools for diagnosing the aetiology behind OD. An ideal workup for idiopathic OD is presented. FUNDING: none. TRIAL REGISTRATION: not relevant. PMID: 33215598 [PubMed - in process]
