Special Considerations in the Care of the Physician-Patient: a Lesson for Medical Education.
Authors: Lam ST Abstract In the field of medicine, there is strong emphasis on the healing of others, but not as much on the healing of self. It is therefore not surprising that physicians may be ill-equipped to not only care for other physicians, but to be treated as patients. Multiple studies indicate that relatively few physicians have their own primary physicians and often rely on self-treatment, rather than obtaining comprehensive care from other physicians. Through the lens of a personal struggle with serious illness, the author develops a discussion about potential barriers physicians face in seeking care, t...

Active Learning in Psychiatry Education: Current Practices and Future Perspectives
Over the past few decades, medical education has seen increased interest in the use of active learning formats to engage learners and promote knowledge application over knowledge acquisition. The field of psychiatry, in particular, has pioneered a host of novel active learning paradigms. These have contributed to our understanding of the role of andragogy along the continuum of medical education, from undergraduate to continuing medical education. In an effort to frame the successes and failures of various attempts at integrating active learning into healthcare curricula, a group of educators from the A. B. Baker Section o...

Continuing education to go: capacity building in psychotherapies for front-line mental health workers in underserviced communities.
Conclusion: This work-based, multimodal, interactive, interprofessional curriculum for knowledge translation of psychotherapeutic techniques is feasible and helpful. A peer-led group format is preferred over self-directed learning. Its application can build capacity of front-line health workers in helping patients who suffer from common mental disorders. Validation of Indian Council of Medical Research Neurocognitive Tool Box in Diagnosis of Mild Cognitive Impairment in India: Lessons from a Harmonization Process in a Linguistically Diverse Society.
CONCLUSIONS: The ICMR-NCTB is a "first of its kind" approach at harmonizing neuropsychological tests across 5 Indian languages for the diagnosis of MCI due to vascular and other etiologies. Utilizing multiple-domain subcomponents also retains the validity of this instrument, making it a valuable tool in MCI research in multilingual settings. A meta-review of lifestyle interventions for cardiovascular risk factors in the general medical population: lessons for individuals with serious mental illness.
CONCLUSIONS: Studies from the general medical literature demonstrate considerable promise in addressing lifestyle risk factors. Existing programs will require tailoring to address the needs of those with serious mental illness and may be harder to implement given the challenges faced by this population. However, successful lifestyle interventions for those with serious mental illness can make a significant impact on the health and well-being of this vulnerable population and may inform future strategies for other underserved groups. Neurodevelopmental Disorders: A Definitive Guide for Educators
As a teacher, it can be especially rewarding to work with students who have special needs. However, that can also mean we are thrown into a classroom with a big group of kids, many of whom have been diagnosed with learning disabilities we know very little about. Because we often start the year scrambling to educate ourselves on our new students’ needs, I had hoped that Neurodevelopmental Disorders: A Definitive Guide for Educators would be a useful resource. Unfortunately, I did not come away from it with a better sense of how to help this student population. Author Frank E. Vargo provides a breakdown of types of ...
