Genomic Characterization of Arcobacter butzleri Isolated From Shellfish: Novel Insight Into Antibiotic Resistance and Virulence Determinants
Conclusion Genomic analyses herein performed allowed us to confirm the recently (Pérez-Cataluña et al., 2018a,b) suggested amendment of A. butzleri as Al. butzlerii, comb. nov. Antimicrobial susceptibility tests defined Ab 55 and Ab 6V strains as resistant to vancomycin, tetracyclin, nalidixic acid (only Ab 55 whereas Ab 6V is intermediate resistant), erythromycin, and β-lactam antibiotics. Moreover, in our strains isolated from shellfish, we identified numerous virulence, antibiotic, and heavy metal resistance determinants, also additional to those previously found in the genome sequenced A. butzler...

Xenopus Resources: Transgenic, Inbred and Mutant Animals, Training Opportunities, and Web-Based Support
This reporter group also includes lines driven by ubiquitous promoters like CMV and human ubiquitin C. These are particularly useful for cut-and-paste, transplantation-based experiments to label and fate map regions of host embryos. The second group of reporter expression lines includes transgenics marking subcellular organelles (Supplementary Table S1B). These are highly useful for the study of molecular processes involved in cell function and are especially effective when utilized in the context of Xenopus egg extracts, the only cell-free system that permits full investigation of all DNA transactions related to cell cyc...

In vitro Antimicrobial Activity of Robenidine, Ethylenediaminetetraacetic Acid and Polymyxin B Nonapeptide Against Important Human and Veterinary Pathogens
Conclusion The results of our study demonstrate that robenidine is not suitable as a sole antimicrobial agent for the treatment of Gram-negative pathogen infections due to the lack of activity against the majority of Gram-negative isolates except for A. baumannii and A. calcoaceticus. However, we demonstrated in vitro efficacy against all selected Gram-negative organisms when robenidine was tested in combination with EDTA or PMBN, including against multidrug-resistant strains. Therefore, robenidine may be an appropriate candidate as a component of a combination preparation for the treatment of otitis externa in dogs. This...

WITHDRAWN: Pleurodesis for malignant pleural effusions.
CONCLUSIONS: The available evidence supports the need for chemical sclerosants for successful pleurodesis, the use of talc as the sclerosant of choice, and thoracoscopic pleurodesis as the preferred technique for pleurodesis based on efficacy. There was no evidence for an increase in mortality following talc pleurodesis. PMID: 24259053 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Face washing promotion for preventing active trachoma.
CONCLUSIONS: There is evidence from one trial that face washing combined with topical tetracycline may be effective in reducing severe active trachoma and in increasing the prevalence of clean faces at one year follow-up. Current evidence is inconclusive as to the effectiveness of face washing alone or in combination with topical tetracycline in reducing active or severe trachoma. Obesity and Overweight are Highly Prevalent in Pediatric Secondary Pseudotumor Cerebri Syndrome (I12-1B)
CONCLUSIONS: Pediatric patients diagnosed with secondary PTCS were on average significantly overweight compared to their peers. Hence excess body weight may contribute to PTCS even when a potential secondary cause is identified. Study Supported by:5-K12-DK-94723-2(SEM)Disclosure: Dr. Paley has nothing to disclose. Prevalence of Primary Antimicrobial Resistance of H. pylori in Turkey: A Systematic Review
ConclusionsPrimary antibiotic resistance against H. pylori in Turkey shows differences between geographical regions and population densities. There is an increase in primary resistance rates to clarithromycin and metronidazole in different years. The data are not sufficient for tetracycline, amoxicillin, and levofloxacin. High clarithromycin resistance rates were mostly detected in overpopulated cities like Ankara (north), Izmir (west), Istanbul (west), and Bursa (west).

Pharmacists' knowledge of the safety of antibiotics for systemic use.
CONCLUSIONS: The study identified gaps in the knowledge of pharmacists about the safety of antimicrobial agents. Views of professionals about antibiotics are mostly consistent with current data about the properties of drugs. However, detailed analysis shows that such views are not supported by clear knowledge of the properties of each drug and are mostly intuitive. In terms of the prevalence of self-medication with antibiotics and OTC dispensing of antimicrobial drugs it is necessary to improve the professional knowledge of pharmaceutical workers on antibiotics for systemic use. Interventions for managing medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw.
CONCLUSIONS: Prophylaxis of MRONJOne open-label RCT provided some evidence that dental examinations in three-month intervals and preventive treatments may be more effective than standard care for reducing the incidence of MRONJ in individuals taking intravenous bisphosphonates for advanced cancer. We assessed the certainty of the evidence to be low. There is insufficient evidence to either claim or refute a benefit of either of the interventions tested for prophylaxis of MRONJ (i.e. PRGF inserted into the postextraction alveolus during dental extractions, and wound closure by primary or secondary intention after dental extr...

Oral microbiota and their antibiotic susceptibility in free-living monkeys in Goiás State, Brazil: Repercussions for injuries in humans
CONCLUSIONS: For bites from capuchi n monkeys, we recommend performing complete hygiene and antibiotic therapy, according to medical recommendations. Given the 100% effectiveness of cefoxitin, it should be considered for this type of injury, especially in the study region.

Shared Multidrug Resistance Patterns in Chicken-Associated Escherichia coli Identified by Association Rule Mining
In conclusion, association rule mining is an effective tool for identifying patterns of multidrug resistance within antimicrobial susceptibility testing data and evaluating the statistical and biological significance of the patterns. Rule quality measures used to sort and differentiate rules should be tested using resampling procedures to minimize the false discovery rate. Rule mining identified consistent multidrug resistance patterns involving beta-lactams, sulfisoxazole, tetracycline, gentamicin, and streptomycin in E. coli isolated from chicken carcasses and meat between 2004 and 2012. The generally low rule overlap su...

Occurrence of Transferable Integrons and sul and dfr Genes Among Sulfonamide-and/or Trimethoprim-Resistant Bacteria Isolated From Chilean Salmonid Farms
Conclusion The present results demonstrated that Chilean salmon farms play an important role as reservoirs of sulfonamide- and trimethoprim-resistant bacteria. The prevalence of conjugative plasmids and integrons among sul-carrying bacteria suggests these bacteria, mainly belonging to the Pseudomonas genus may contribute to high spread of bacterial resistance to sulfonamides and other antibacterials in environments associated with Chilean salmon farms. This is the first study reporting the occurrence of transferable sul and dfr genes and integrons among the antimicrobial resistant bacteria associated with Chilean salmonid...

Biodiversity and Multifunctional Features of Lactic Acid Bacteria Isolated From Table Olive Biofilms
Conclusion Lactobacillus pentosus was the predominant species found at industrial scale in Spanish table olives biofilms, albeit certain genotypes of L. plantarum were also detected. At genotype level, biodiversity was higher in the Spanish-style table olive biofilms than in those of directly brined olives. The multivariate analysis based on technological and probiotic data showed that the main 16 genotypes obtained could be clustered in 3 great phenotypes, with some strains with potential application as multifunctional starters (especially L. pentosus Lp13 and LpG1 genotypes). Data obtained in the present study showed th...
