Management of hypertension and dyslipidemia in Mexico: Evidence, gaps, and approach
Arch Cardiol Mex. 2022 Mar 31. doi: 10.24875/ACM.21000330. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTHypertension and dyslipidemia are key risk factors for cardiovascular disorders and mortality worldwide. To understand the local health system challenges faced in the management of the two conditions, a semi-systematic approach was adopted for quantifying stages of the journey of care of adult Mexican patients, namely, awareness, screening, diagnosis, treatment, adherence, and control. A structured literature search was conducted for articles published in English from 2010 to 2019 in EMBASE and MEDLINE databases. The articles restricte...

The Association of Arsenic Metabolism with Cancer, Cardiovascular Disease, and Diabetes: A Systematic Review of the Epidemiological Evidence
Conclusions: Population level of iAs% and DMA%, but not MMA%, were associated with arsenic exposure levels. Overall, study findings suggest that higher MMA% was associated with an increased risk of cancer and cardiovascular disease, while lower MMA% was associated with an increased risk of diabetes and metabolic syndrome. Additional population-based studies and experimental studies are needed to further evaluate and understand the role of arsenic exposure in arsenic metabolism and the role of arsenic metabolism in disease development. https://doi.org/10.1289/EHP577 Received: 01 June 2016 Revised: 26 February 2017 Acce...

Anti-vascular endothelial growth factors in combination with vitrectomy for complications of proliferative diabetic retinopathy
CONCLUSIONS: The perioperative use of anti-VEGF reduces the risk of late POVCH, probably results in lower early POVCH risk and may improve visual outcomes. It also reduces the incidence of intraoperative retinal breaks. The evidence is very uncertain about its effect on the need for silicone oil tamponade. The reported complications from its use appear to be low. Agreement on variables included and outcome standardisation is required in trials studying vitrectomy for PDR.PMID:37260074 | PMC:PMC10230853 | DOI:10.1002/14651858.CD008214.pub4

Inside the Effort to Promote Abortion Pills For a Post-Roe America
If the Supreme Court overturns Roe v. Wade this summer, as a leaked draft opinion suggests it may, abortion will likely be banned or severely restricted in about half of the United States. But that doesn’t necessarily mean the country will return to a world before 1973, when the landmark Supreme Court case enshrined a constitutional right to abortion. Abortion pills, which can be ordered online and delivered by mail, have already fundamentally changed reproductive rights in America. The regimen of two drugs, mifepristone and misoprostol, can in theory be safely taken anywhere, including in the privacy of people&rsquo...

Assessing Exposure to Household Air Pollution: A Systematic Review and Pooled Analysis of Carbon Monoxide as a Surrogate Measure of Particulate Matter
Conclusions: Our results suggest that exposure to CO is not a consistently valid surrogate measure of exposure to PM2.5. Studies measuring CO exposure as a surrogate measure of PM exposure should conduct local validation studies for different stove/fuel types and seasons. https://doi.org/10.1289/EHP767 Received: 06 July 2016 Revised: 19 December 2016 Accepted: 20 December 2016 Published: 28 July 2017 Address correspondence to J. Mexico Struggles to Find the Missing as Death Toll From Earthquake Rises to 273
(MEXICO CITY) — As painstaking attempts to reach survivors in quake-ravaged buildings across Mexico City stretched into a third day Thursday, desperation mounted among loved ones who earlier had high hopes for quick rescues and some complained they were being kept in the dark about search efforts. And what many had clung to as the unlikely triumph of life over death was revealed to be a case of some very high-profile misinformation: A top navy official announced there were no missing children at a collapsed Mexico City school where the purported plight of a girl trapped alive in the rubble had captivated people acros...

Neurorehabilitation of saccadic ocular movement in a patient with a homonymous hemianopia postgeniculate caused by an arteriovenous malformation: A Case Report
AbstractRationale:Visual therapy, which includes a restorative and compensatory approach, seems to be a viable treatment option for homonymous defects of the visual field in patients with postgeniculate injury of the visual pathway, due to occipital arteriovenous malformation (AVM). Until now, the Mexican population suffering from homonymous hemianopia did not have health services that provided any type of visual therapy for their condition.Patient concerns:A 31-year-old patient, who underwent a surgical procedure for resection of the AVM, was referred with posterior low vision on the left side.Diagnoses:The patient was di...

Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis Confirms Significant Contribution of Surfactant Protein D in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease
Conclusion: Serum concentration and alleleic conformation of SFTPD has a significantly high predictive value for COPD and AECOPD. Thus, these can be tested further and could be applied as a predictive or prognostic marker. Introduction Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) affects lungs and exhibits irreversible airflow conditions that leads to improper respiratory function (Carolan et al., 2014). COPD is a global disease burden which accounts for ~3 million deaths annually (Zemans et al., 2017) and is responsible for the increase in worldwide mortality and morbidity (Dickens et al., 2011). Chronic O...

Trends and gaps in climate change and health research in North America
Environ Res. 2021 May 4:111205. doi: 10.1016/j.envres.2021.111205. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) 5th Assessment Report (2014) assessed the state of climate change and health knowledge, globally through the Human Health: Impacts, Adaptation, and Co-Benefits Chapter and regionally through chapters, such as the North America Chapter. With IPCC's 6th Assessment Report scheduled to be released in 2021, we asked: how has climate change and health research in North America advanced since the IPCC's 5th Assessment Report in 2014? Specifically, we systematically identified and ex...
