In this study, we conducted a cross-sectional survey among 419 acupuncturists nation-wide to investigate the top 10 and top 99 acupuncture indications in private clinics in the United States. We found the top 10 indications to be: lower back pain, depression, anxiety, headache, arthritis, allergies, general pain, female infertility, insomnia, neck pain and frozen shoulder. Among the top 99 indications, pain represents the largest category; and mental health management, especially for mood disorders, is in greatest demand. IJERPH, Vol. 15, Pages 2043: The Epidemiology of Food Allergy in the Global Context
ang There is a lack of high-quality evidence based on the gold standard of oral food challenges to determine food allergy prevalence. Nevertheless, studies using surrogate measures of food allergy, such as health service utilization and clinical history, together with allergen-specific immunoglobulin E (sIgE), provide compelling data that the prevalence of food allergy is increasing in both Western and developing countries. In Western countries, challenge-diagnosed food allergy has been reported to be as high as 10%, with the greatest prevalence noted among younger children. There is also growing evidence of increasing...

People Are Now Taking Placebo Pills to Deal With Their Health Problems —And It’s Working
For over 20 years, Linda Buonanno lived in fear that her irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) would suddenly interrupt her daily routine with frequent trips to the bathroom and unbearable cramping. Buonanno, now a 71-year-old medical assistant and hairdresser from Methuen, Mass., tried everything from drugs to dairy-free diets. Nothing worked. She remembers a particularly tough period over 10 years ago, when she was working on the factory floor of a medical-device company for up to 10 hours a day, six days a week. When an IBS episode would strike, her co-workers would cover for her as she huddled in a corner, keeled over in pain...

Nontyphoidal Salmonella Gastroenteritis in a Tertiary Children's Hospital in Southern China: Characteristics and Dietary Considerations.
Conclusions: Salmonella Typhimurium was the predominant serotype. Most patients with nontyphoidal Salmonella gastroenteritis were younger than 3 years old. Lactose intolerance occurred frequently in children with nontyphoidal Salmonella gastroenteritis and dietary modification should be considered when diarrhea is persistent and prolonged. Association of serum specific IgE levels with asthma in autumn pollen-induced allergic rhinitis: a retrospective analysis.
CONCLUSION: Autumn pollen-induced allergic rhinitis often coexists with seasonal asthma. The incidence of asthma is more pronounced when the sIgE level was higher. PMID: 29667465 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Medical Adhesive–Related Skin Injury Prevalence at the Peripherally Inserted Central Catheter Insertion Site: A Cross-sectional, Multiple-Center Study
We examined prevalence and associated risk factors of medical adhesive–related skin injury (MARSI) at the peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC) insertion site in hospitalized oncology patients in Guangxi, China. DESIGN: A cross-sectional, multiple-center epidemiological study. SUBJECTS AND SETTING: The sample comprised 697 adult inpatients at 4 tertiary hospitals (3 general hospitals and 1 oncology hospital). The facilities are located in the western China. Phytochemical variation among the traditional Chinese medicine Mu Dan Pi from Paeonia suffruticosa (tree peony)
In this study, the metabolome variation within Mu Dan Pi collected from 372 tree peony cultivars was systematically investigated. In total, 42 metabolites were identified, comprising of 14 monoterpene glucosides, 11 tannins, 8 paeonols, 6 flavonoids, and 3 phenols. All cultivars revealed similar metabolite profiles, however, they were further classified into seven groups on the basis of their varying metabolite contents by hierarchical cluster analysis. Traditional cultivars for Mu Dan Pi were found to have very low metabolite contents, falling into clusters I and II. Cultivars with the highest amounts of metabolites were ...

The Western environment reduces innate immune cytokine production in Chinese immigrants
In the past few decades, a dramatic increase in the prevalence of allergic disease in Western developed countries has led to a large disproportion in the prevalence of asthma and allergy between Western and Eastern countries.1,2 Australia and China have one of the highest and lowest rates of asthma and allergies, respectively, as demonstrated in the International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood.3,4 Immigrants who migrate from low-risk countries to high-risk countries experience a gradual increase in allergic diseases to the same level as the local population.

A cross-sectional observational study on allergen sIgE positivity among allergic patients in a southeast coastal versus a southwest inland region of China
Few studies shed light on trans-regional differences in allergen sensitization between vast regions within a similar latitudinal range but with distinct geomorphological features. We aimed to detect specific IgE (sIgE) positivity to common allergens in populations from two southern China provinces. Using a uniformed protocol, serum was collected from 2778 allergic patients in coastal Guangdong and inland Yunnan, and examined for sIgE to local allergens including house dust mite, cockroach, tree pollen mix, mold mix, dog dander, crab, shrimp, egg white and milk. The overall sIgE positive rates were 58.4% in patients from Gu...

Association between allergic diseases, allergic sensitization and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder in children: A large-scale, population-based study
Conclusion Our results suggest that AD and asthma with allergic sensitization are associated with ADHD in children. As allergic sensitization is an increased factor of developing allergic diseases, early control of environmental and allergens exposure could help to modify the burden of ADHD.

The pathogenesis of iodide mumps: A case report
Relation: Iodide mumps is an uncommon condition, induced by iodide-containing contrast, and is characterized by a rapid, painless enlargement of the bilateral or unilateral salivary gland. At present, the pathogenesis of iodide mumps is not yet clear. It may be related to an idiosyncratic reaction, a toxic accumulation of iodine in the gland duct, or renal function damage leading to an iodine excretion disorder. This paper reports the clinical manifestations and magnetic resonance imaging results of one case of iodide mumps, which occurred after digital subtraction angiography. Patient concerns: A 66-year-old Chinese ...
