Myeloid-Derived Suppressor Cells: Ductile Targets in Disease
Discussion
MDSCs violently emerge in pathological conditions in an attempt to limit potentially harmful immune and inflammatory responses. Mechanisms supporting their expansion and survival are deeply investigated in cancer, in the perspective to reactivate specific antitumor responses and prevent their contribution to disease evolution. These findings will likely contribute to improve the targeting of MDSCs in anticancer immunotherapies, either alone or in combination with immune checkpoint inhibitors. New evidence indicates that the expansion of myeloid cell differentiation in pathology is subject to fine-tuning, as its...

Effects of Orally Ingested Arsenic on Respiratory Epithelial Permeability to Bacteria and Small Molecules in Mice
Conclusions:
Peroral arsenic has little effect on local airway immune responses to bacteria but compromises respiratory epithelial barrier integrity, increasing systemic translocation of inhaled pathogens and small molecules. https://doi.org/10.1289/EHP1878

Intraoperative magnesium sulphate decreases agitation and pain in patients undergoing functional endoscopic surgery: A randomised double-blind study
BACKGROUND: Postoperative agitation is harmful for the patient as it may be associated with removal of catheters, nasal packs, oxygen masks and self-injury, and pose a danger to operating theatre staff.
OBJECTIVE: The current study investigated the potential role of magnesium sulphate in treatment of postoperative agitation following functional endoscopic sinus surgery.
DESIGN: A randomised, double-blinded, placebo-controlled trial.
SETTING: ENT operating room, Menofia University Hospitals, Egypt.
PATIENTS: A total of 312 adult patients (171 men and 141 women) were enrolled in the study. Eighteen patients (10 men and e...

Effects of Coal Fly Ash Particulate Matter on the Antimicrobial Activity of Airway Surface Liquid
Conclusion:
We propose that when CFA arrives at the airway, it rapidly adsorbs AMPs and creates negative complexes, thereby decreasing the functional amount of AMPs capable of killing pathogens. These results provide a novel translational insight into an early mechanism for how ambient PM increases the susceptibility of the airways to bacterial infection. https://doi.org/10.1289/EHP876

Risk factors for and expression of immune and inflammatory factors in atopic dermatitis in Chinese population: A birth cohort study
Conclusion IgE and IL-4 levels in the maternal serum and umbilical cord blood as well as IL-18 level in the maternal serum are related to the occurrence of childhood AD. Potential factors for infant AD include family income, parental history of atopy, age of menarche, housing renovation before pregnancy, virus infection, and calcium supplementation during pregnancy.

Maternal consumption of dairy products, calcium, and vitamin D during pregnancy and infantile allergic disorders.
CONCLUSION: Higher maternal intake of total dairy products, cheese, yogurt, and calcium during pregnancy may reduce the risk of infantile eczema, physician-diagnosed asthma, physician-diagnosed atopic eczema, and physician-diagnosed atopic eczema, respectively. Higher maternal intake of vitamin D during pregnancy may increase the risk of infantile eczema.

Effect of rosuvastatin on cytokines after traumatic head injury.
Conclusions The authors' data suggest that statins may induce an antiinflammatory effect and may promote recovery after TBI. The role of statins in TBI therapy should be confirmed in larger clinical trials. Clinical trial registration no.: NCT00990028.
