69 Identifying opportunities to prevent AF-related stroke through better access to NHS primary and secondary care data
Introduction: Public Health England (PHE) has set a target to reduce the incidence of avoidable strokes in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) by 5,000 nationally over the next 5 years. Aligned with this goal, Greater Manchester (GM) Academic Health Sciences Network (AHSN) launched an online data visualisation platform in 2015 that provides a unique opportunity to view and compare multiple primary and secondary care datasets across the AF care pathway to help prevent avoidable AF-related strokes. It is endorsed by PHE and has been adopted by multiple AHSNs across the country.

Boston Scientific puts $270m on the table for Claret Medical
Boston Scientific (NYSE:BSX) said today that it agreed to pay as much as $270 million to acquire Claret and its Sentinel device.
Marlborough, Mass.-based Boston Scientific said the deal involves an ip-front cash payment of $220 million and another $50 million pegged to a reimbursement milestone. Claret’s Sentinel device is designed to trap and remove debris dislodged during transcatheter aortic valve replacements to prevent stroke and other neurological damage.

Conclusion: These findings limit the possible roles of gene transcriptional changes in previously reported age-dependent pro-arrhythmic electrophysiologial changes observed in Pgc-1β-/- atria to an altered Ca2+-ATPase (Atp2a2) expression. This directly parallels previously reported arrhythmic mechanism associated with p21-activated kinase type 1 deficiency. This could add to contributions from the direct physiological outcomes of mitochondrial dysfunction, whether through reactive oxygen species (ROS) production or altered Ca2+ homeostasis.

Effect of oral anticoagulation on clinical outcomes and haemodynamic variables after successful transcatheter aortic valve implantation.
CONCLUSIONS: Baseline characteristics, rather than oral anticoagulation prescription at discharge, were associated with adverse outcomes following successful transcatheter aortic valve implantation. Conversely, oral anticoagulation was associated with reduced valvular haemodynamic deterioration.
