Medtech in a Minute: Feeling the Coronavirus Pinch, J & amp;J & #039;s Apple Study, and More
Coronavirus Hurts Big Medtech's Bottom Line  As the Chinese healthcare system focuses on containing the spread of the coronavirus, medical device companies doing business in China are seeing lower procedure volumes, which means lower-than-expected revenue in the first quarter. Boston Scientific, for example, expects the virus to lower first-quarter revenue by $10 million to $40 million.   J&J and Apple Have Big Hopes for Heartline Study Johnson & Johnson’s Janssen Pharmaceutical unit and Apple opened enrollment for the Heartline Study, which aims to ...

Left Atrial Strain as Evaluated by Two-Dimensional Speckle Tracking Predicts Left Atrial Appendage Dysfunction in Chinese Patients with Atrial Fibrillation.
Abstract Left atrial appendage (LAA) dysfunction identified by transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) is a powerful predictor of stroke in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF). The aim of our study is to assess if there is a correlation between the left atrial (LA) functional parameter and LAA dysfunction in the AF patients. This cross-sectional study included a total of 249 Chinese AF patients who did not have cardiac valvular diseases and were undergoing cardiac ablation. TEE was performed in all the patients who were categorized into two groups according to their left atrial appendage (LAA) function. A total ...

Ethnic differences in atrial fibrillation among patients with heart failure in Asia
ConclusionsAmong patients with HF across Asia, clinical correlates and adverse outcomes associated with AF are similar across ethnicities; however, there are striking ethnic variations in the prevalence of AF that are not accounted for by known risk factors.

Baseline CHADS2 Score and Risk of Cardiovascular Events in the Population without Atrial Fibrillation
The association between CHADS2 score and stroke has been confirmed in patients with atrial fibrillation. But the majority of cardiovascular events occurred primarily in population without atrial fibrillation. Therefore, we performed this cohort study to evaluate the association between baseline CHADS2 score and cardiovascular events in the population without atrial fibrillation. A total of 99,755 Chinese adults with complete baseline data were followed for up to 10 years. The primary outcomes were cardiovascular event (a composite endpoint of myocardial infarction, cerebral infarction and cerebral hemorrhage) and all-cause death.

Epidemiology and factors associated with mortality of thyroid storm in Taiwan: a nationwide population-based study
In conclusion, the 90-day mortality rate of thyroid storm was high and was commonly associated with multiorgan failure and shock. Therefore, clinical physicians should identify thyroid storm and treat it accordi ngly.

Surgical left atrial appendage occlusion in patients with atrial fibrillation undergoing mechanical heart valve replacement.
CONCLUSIONS: Concomitant SLAAO and MHVR was associated with longer length of stay, and cardiopulmonary bypass time and aortic cross-clamp time, but was not associated with additional protective effects against thromboembolic events and mortality during the 14-month follow-up. A novel nonsense mutation in TNNT2 in a Chinese pedigree with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy: A case report
Rationale: Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is an inherited myocardial disease and a common cause of sudden cardiac death, heart failure, atrial fibrillation and stroke. In families affected by HCM, genotyping is useful for identifying susceptible relatives. In the present study, we investigated the disease-causing mutations in a three-generation Chinese family with HCM using whole exome sequencing (WES). Patient concerns: The proband, a 50-year-old man, was diagnosed with HCM at the age of 41 years. He presented with an asymmetric hypertrophic interventricular septum and a maximum interventricular septum thickness o...

Associations of Atrial Fibrillation Progression with Clinical Risk Factors and Clinical Prognosis: A report from the Chinese Atrial Fibrillation Registry Study
ConclusionsAF progression was common in its natural course. It was related to comorbidities and whether rhythm control strategies were used, and was associated with an increased risk of IS/SE and cardiovascular hospitalization.Clinical Trial RegistrationChinese Clinical Trial Registry ChiCTR ‐OCH‐13003729. Association between use of amiodarone for non-valvular atrial fibrillation and patient survival: from the prospective China Atrial Fibrillation Registry.
CONCLUSIONS: Our study indicated that amiodarone use was not significantly associated with a lower risk of 1-year all-cause mortality compared with a non-AAD strategy in "real-world" patients with NVAF. PMID: 33273373 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Association Between Perioperative Glycemic Control Strategy and Mortality in Patients With Diabetes Undergoing Cardiac Surgery: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
ConclusionsThis meta-analysis showed when compared with moderate glycemic control strategy in patients with diabetes undergoing cardiac surgery, maintained strict glycemic control was associated with lower risk of atrial fibrillation and sternal wound infection. No benefit was found with liberal glycemic control strategy, so it could be a poor glycemic control strategy.

Use of Cardiovascular Drugs for Primary and Secondary Prevention of Cardiovascular Disease Among Rural-Dwelling Older Chinese Adults
In conclusion, despite highly prevalent cardiovascular risk factors and CVDs, a fairly low proportion of the rural-dwelling older adults take CV medications for primary and secondary prevention. Notably, TCM products are among the most commonly used CV drugs. These results call for additional efforts to promote implementation of the evidence-based recommendations for prevention of CVDs in the primary care settings.
