Genetic variation at the IGF1 locus shows association to post-stroke outcome and to circulating IGF-I.
CONCLUSION: Variation in rs7136446 of the IGF1 gene associates with post-stroke outcome in relatively young IS patients. Also, rs7136446 associates with s-IGF-I in controls but not in IS, which indicates that IS perturbs a normal genetic impact on s-IGF-I levels. PMID: 24005314 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Selected adipose tissue hormones in the blood of patients with ischemic cerebral stroke.
CONCLUSIONS: Higher resistin and chemerin blood concentrations significantly increase the risk of ischemic stroke. The level of stroke severity in the moment of its occurrence and its course do not depend on the concentrations of adipocytokines under analysis. PMID: 31851370 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Accuracy and Implications of Hemorrhagic Stroke Recognition by Emergency Medical Services.
CONCLUSIONS: Among EMS-transported hemorrhagic stroke cases, stroke screen documentation was strongly associated with EMS stroke recognition, which was in turn associated with higher quality of EMS care and faster CT scans upon emergency department arrival. The ABCD2 score may underestimate the short-term risk of stroke in Chinese population: A meta-analysis.
CONCLUSIONS: This meta-analysis indicated that the ABCD2 score may highly under-predict the short-term occurrence of stroke after TIA for the Chinese population compared with the original model derived from Caucasian populations, which may lead to neglect of the short-term risk for stroke in the clinical practice. PMID: 26313394 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Observational Multicenter Study of a Direct-to-CT Protocol for EMS-transported Patients with Suspected Stroke.
CONCLUSIONS: In this sample from seven hospitals, a minimal reduction in door-to-CT-ordered and door-to-CT-started time, but no change in door-to-needle time, was found for EMS patients with suspected stroke taken directly to the CT scanner, compared to those evaluated in the ED prior to CT. Association between hemoglobin A1c and acute ischemic stroke among patients with type-2 diabetes: a case-control study
ConclusionsOngoing surveillance of HbA1c among PTDs should be conducted alongside knowledge sharing of glycemic control and stroke prevention as an essential measure to prevent developing AIS risk.

Higher admission fasting plasma glucose levels are associated with a poorer short-term neurologic outcome in acute ischemic stroke patients with good collateral circulation
ConclusionHigher admission FPG levels are associated with significantly higher rates of unfavorable neurologic outcome of acute ischemic stroke patients with good collateral circulation. FPG and rFTD may serve as useful predictors of short-term patient outcome and could be used for risk stratification in clinical decision making.

Left ventricle cardiac myxoma as a cause of ischaemic stroke in young patient treated by mechanical thrombectomy.
We present a case of a young 21-year-old woman with no symptoms of dyspnoea who suddenly developed expressive aphasia and right-sided hemiparesis due to a thrombus in the left middle cerebral artery followed by the left anterior cerebral artery. She underwent acute mechanical thrombectomy with improvement of the neurological status. Bedside ultrasonography detected a suspected myxoma, which was further confirmed by a CT scan as a myxoma in the left cardiac ventricle. The patient underwent successful surgery. We stress on the importance of echocardiographic examination in young patients after ischaemic stroke and multidisci...

Severe paraneoplastic hypoglycemia secondary to a gastrointestinal stromal tumour masquerading as a stroke.
We report the case of a 70-year-old previously healthy female who presented acutely to the Accident and Emergency department with left-sided vasomotor symptoms including reduced muscle tone, weakness upon walking and slurred speech. Physical examination confirmed hemiparesis with VIIth nerve palsy and profound hepatomegaly. A random glucose was low at 1.7 mmol/l, which upon correction resolved her symptoms. In hindsight, the patient recalled having had similar episodes periodically over the past 3 months to which she did not give much attention. While hospitalized, she continued having episodes of symptomatic hypoglycaem...

Sex Differences in Sex Hormone Profiles and Prediction of Consciousness Recovery After Severe Traumatic Brain Injury
Conclusion: These findings indicate that TBI differentially affects the levels of sex-steroid hormones in men and women patients. Plasma levels of testosterone could be a good candidate blood marker to predict recovery from unconsciousness after sTBI for male patients. Introduction Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a major cause of death and disability worldwide and is increasing in incidence (1). Patients with acute severe TBI (sTBI) often develop severe disorders of consciousness, i.e., coma, minimally conscious state or vegetative state. Although many patients may regain consciousness during the 1-month post-TBI p...

Use of liraglutide and risk of major cardiovascular events: a register-based cohort study in Denmark and Sweden

We aimed to assess the cardiovascular effectiveness of liraglutide in rou...

Contemporary management of pediatric lateral sinus thrombosis: A twenty year review
Conclusion: Lateral sinus thrombosis is a rare but treatable complication of otologic disease in the pediatric population, warranting a high index of suspicion. Management should include broad spectrum antibiotics and surgical removal of all perisinus infection. Anticoagulation is not definitively associated with improved outcomes and warrants further investigation.

Blood pressure variability: A new target to slow the progression of vascular damage in type 2 diabetes?
Hypertension is a widely recognized cardiovascular risk factor. Besides the correct measurement of systolic blood pressure (BP), of paramount importance in assessing cardiovascular risk, other BP features have been suggested to play a role; among these, the visit-to-visit BP variability is receiving growing support from the scientific literature. Observational studies link BP variability with carotid artery intima media thickness and atherosclerosis (), and in aging people it worsens cardiovascular prognosis and negatively affects cognitive function (). Post-hoc analyses of large trials, like the United Kingdom Transient I...
