Anxiety in Patients With Acute Ischemic Stroke: Risk Factors and Effects on Functional Status
Conclusion: Depressive symptoms are the major correlates of PSA while more severe PSA is associated with poorer ADL and health-related QOL. Acute lesions involving CHWM may correlate with PSA in ischemic stroke patients with mild-to-moderate neurologic deficits, supporting a lesion-location hypothesis in PSA.IntroductionAnxiety is prevalent after stroke and occurs in about one-quarter of stroke survivors (1, 2). Poststroke anxiety (PSA) may have a negative impact on quality of life (QOL) of stroke survivors, affecting their rehabilitation (3). Furthermore, one prospective study found that severe anxiety symptoms were assoc...

Translation into Brazilian Portuguese, cross-cultural adaptation, reliability and validation of the Functional Ambulation Classification for the categorization of ambulation following a stroke in a clinical setting.
CONCLUSION: The translation, cross-cultural adaptation and measurement properties demonstrated that the FAC is a valid, reliable clinical measure for the categorization of ambulation in the Brazilian population of stroke survivors in a clinical setting.

More Research Is Needed on Lifestyle Behaviors That Influence Progression of Parkinson's Disease
This article highlights some of these challenges in the design of lifestyle studies in PD, and suggests a more coordinated international effort is required, including ongoing longitudinal observational studies. In combination with pharmaceutical treatments, healthy lifestyle behaviors may slow the progression of PD, empower patients, and reduce disease burden. For optimal care of people with PD, it is important to close this gap in current knowledge and discover whether such associations exist.
Introduction
Parkinson's disease (PD) is an age-related complex progressive neurodegenerative disorder, with key p...

Neuroimmunology of Human T-Lymphotropic Virus Type 1-Associated Myelopathy/Tropical Spastic Paraparesis
Conclusion
Recent advances in research on HTLV-1 provide better understanding of the molecular pathogenesis and mechanisms of HAM/TSP, and several clinical trials of novel therapies for patients with HAM/TSP have been initiated. However, long-term improvement of motor disability and quality of life still have not been achieved in HAM/TSP patients, and the clinical management remains challenging. Given that HAM/TSP is characterized by activated T-cells in both the periphery and CNS, studies in HAM/TSP will be highly informative for clarifying the pathogenesis of other neuroinflammatory disorders such as multiple sclerosis....

Telemedicine in neurology: current evidence
Conclusion: Current evidence supports that teleneurology can be a tool to increase care for patients suffering from neurological diseases.RESUMO Introdu ção: A telemedicina surge pela primeira vez na neurologia como uma ferramenta para facilitar o acesso ao tratamento do acidente vascular cerebral (AVC) Agudo.

Is the unstable ataxic hand of Alajouanine and Akerman a distinct contribution?
Rev Neurol (Paris). 2021 Jun 21:S0035-3787(21)00552-X. doi: 10.1016/j.neurol.2020.12.004. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTWe discuss from a historical perspective whether the 1931 description of the "unstable ataxic hand" by Théophile Alajouanine, the fifth successor of Charcot at la Salpêtrière, and the Brazilian neurologist Abraham Akerman, then studying in France, merits being considered a distinct contribution vis-à-vis the earlier description by Oppenheim of the "useless hand syndrome". The specific object of the article by Alajouanine and Akerman was a semiologic sign, namely a pseudoathetosis localized in the hand...
