The contribution of systematic implementation of cardiovascular explorations for the detection of cardiac sources of embolism in patients with stroke: About 230  patients.
CONCLUSION: Cardiovascular explorations remain indispensable in the workup of all ischemic strokes even if their therapeutic effect is modest. The lacunar infarct out first at 34% followed by 32% of cardio embolic causes and atheroma of the neck vessels in approximately 16%. PMID: 29753425 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Effect of change in posture on maternal functional hemodynamics at 35 –37 weeks' gestation
ConclusionsParadoxically, in late third‐trimester normal pregnancy, both change from the supine to a sitting position and passive leg raising may result in an increase in preload with a consequent increase in cardiac and stroke volume indices and a decrease in total peripheral resistance index. In pregnancies that develop PE or GH, the effects of postural change on cardiovascular parameters are similar but less marked than in normotensive pregnancies. Copyright © 2017 ISUOG. Urine Arsenic and Arsenic Metabolites in U.S. Adults and Biomarkers of Inflammation, Oxidative Stress, and Endothelial Dysfunction: A Cross-Sectional Study
Conclusion: In a cross-sectional study of U.S. adults, we observed some positive associations of uAs and toenail As concentrations with biomarkers potentially relevant to CVD pathogenesis and inflammation, and evidence of a higher capacity to metabolize inorganic As was negatively associated with a marker of oxidative stress. https://doi.org/10.1289/EHP2062 Received: 14 April 2017 Revised: 13 November 2017 Accepted: 15 November 2017 Published: 15 December 2017 Address correspondence to S.F. Cerebrovascular Reactivity and Vascular Activation in Postmenopausal Women With Histories of PreeclampsiaNovelty and Significance Preeclampsia
This study examined an association between pregnancy history and CVR using a subgroup of 40 age- and parity-matched pairs of women having histories of preeclampsia (n=27) or normotensive pregnancy (n=29) and the association of activated blood elements with CVR. Middle cerebral artery velocity was measured by Doppler ultrasound before and during hypercapnia to assess CVR. Thirty-eight parameters of blood cellular elements, microvesicles, and cell–cell interactions measured in venous blood were assessed for association with CVR using principal component analysis. Middle cerebral artery velocity was lower in the preeclampsi...

Doctors develop new way to use MRI to predict pregnancy complications
FINDINGSUCLA scientists have developed anew way to use magnetic resonance imaging, or MRI, to scan the placenta. The noninvasive approach offers valuable insights into how the mother ’s blood enters the placenta and sustains the fetus with oxygen and nutrients during early pregnancy. The technique breaks new ground because most previous studies on this subject occurred in the laboratory after childbirth.BACKGROUNDThe placenta is a temporary organ that joins a pregnant woman to her baby through the umbilical cord. Few methods exist for safely and accurately studying the placenta in early pregnancy. Ultrasound indirectly m...

Atherosclerosis in systemic lupus erythematosus
Publication date: Available online 16 October 2017 Source:Best Practice & Research Clinical Rheumatology Author(s): Sara Croca, Anisur Rahman Cardiovascular disease (CVD), comprising coronary heart disease and stroke, is one of the most important causes of death in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). The risks of developing both clinical CVD and sub-clinical atherosclerosis are increased in patients with SLE. This increase is not fully explained by traditional cardiovascular risk factors such as smoking, hypertension and elevated cholesterol, and it is believed that immune dysfunction also contribute...

Morphological changes of the internal carotid artery: prevalence and characteristics. A clinical and ultrasonographic study in a series of 19 804 patients over 25 years old
ConclusionMorphological changes of the internal carotid arteries were associated with aging, female gender and patients with hyperlipidemia, hypertension, diabetes and heart disease. Kinking was associated with ipsilateral cerebral ischemia.

Headache and pregnancy: a systematic review
AbstractThis systematic review summarizes the existing data on headache and pregnancy with a scope on clinical headache phenotypes, treatment of headaches in pregnancy and effects of headache medications on the child during pregnancy and breastfeeding, headache related complications, and diagnostics of headache in pregnancy. Headache during pregnancy can be both primary and secondary, and in the last case can be a symptom of a life-threatening condition. The most common secondary headaches are stroke, cerebral venous thrombosis, subarachnoid hemorrhage, pituitary tumor, choriocarcinoma, eclampsia, preeclampsia, idiopathic ...

Cardiovascular Events After Exposure to Nilotinib in Chronic Myeloid Leukemia: Long-term Follow-up
Conclusion The incidence of CVEs and the frequency of asymptomatic PAD in this population was low, and CVEs were associated with cardiovascular risk factors. Aggressive risk factor modification and applying standard definitions for measuring cardiovascular outcomes might have contributed to the findings. Further prospective and adequately powered studies are needed to explore the effect of the cardiovascular risk profile on CVEs in CML patients taking nilotinib. Micro-Abstract The present study evaluated the incidence of cardiovascular events (CVEs) in 63 chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) patients after long-term exposure to ...

The Association of Arsenic Metabolism with Cancer, Cardiovascular Disease, and Diabetes: A Systematic Review of the Epidemiological Evidence
Conclusions: Population level of iAs% and DMA%, but not MMA%, were associated with arsenic exposure levels. Overall, study findings suggest that higher MMA% was associated with an increased risk of cancer and cardiovascular disease, while lower MMA% was associated with an increased risk of diabetes and metabolic syndrome. Additional population-based studies and experimental studies are needed to further evaluate and understand the role of arsenic exposure in arsenic metabolism and the role of arsenic metabolism in disease development. https://doi.org/10.1289/EHP577 Received: 01 June 2016 Revised: 26 February 2017 Acce...

Angiogenic Markers and Cardiovascular Indices in the Prediction of Hypertensive Disorders of PregnancyNovelty and Significance Preeclampsia
We examined a cohort of 110 pregnant women with uneventful pregnancy outcome (controls) and 129 with hypertensive pregnancy disorders, including 77 with preeclampsia and 52 with pregnancy-induced hypertension. Cardiac indices were obtained with a USCOM-1A monitor, and soluble fms-like tyrosin kinase 1, placental growth factor, and NT-proBNP were measured in serum samples on automated platforms. Logistic regression, as well as Cox proportional hazard analysis, was performed. There were significant contributions from all variables tested, except for heart rate, stroke volume index, and cardiac index to the prediction model. ...

Longitudinal maternal hemodynamics in pregnancies affected by fetal growth restriction
ConclusionSerial assessment of maternal hemodynamics in high‐risk women identifies distinctive trends associated with pregnancies destined to deliver babies with birth weights < 10th and < 5th percentiles. These pregnancies have a suppressed and static maternal cardiac output and stroke volume, and have consistently raised peripheral vascular resistance. This suggests that, in women with chronic hypertension or a history of hypertensive disorder in a previous pregnancy, FGR is associated with a primary and persistent failure of maternal cardiovascular adaptation in pregnancy.
