Establishment and validation of a prediction model for ischemic stroke risks in patients with type 2 diabetes
Diabetes is a formidable global health threat because of its high prevalence and numerous complications. Furthermore, diabetes is a leading cause of mortality and microvascular and macrovascular diseases, including coronary diseases, cerebrovascular diseases, and peripheral vascular diseases. A recent study reports that risk of stroke in patients with type 2 diabetes is two to five times higher than the general population [1]. The World Health Organization MONICA project reported that stroke incidence is higher among ethnic Chinese population than among Western population [2].

Thromboinflammatory Functions of Platelets in Ischemia –Reperfusion Injury and Its Dysregulation in Diabetes
Semin Thromb Hemost DOI: 10.1055/s-0037-1613694Ischemia–reperfusion (IR) injury is a common complication of a variety of cardiovascular diseases, including ischemic stroke and myocardial infarction (MI). While timely re-establishment of blood flow in a thrombosed artery is the primary goal of acute therapy in these diseases, paradoxically, reperfusion of ischemic tissue can cause widespread microvascular dysfunction that significantly exacerbates organ damage. Reperfusion injury is associated with activation of the humoral and cellular components of the hemostatic and innate immune systems and also with excessive reactiv...

Predictive Factors of Developing Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, Acute Myocardial Infarction and Stroke in a Cohort with Impaired Fasting Glucose in Singapore
In Singapore, the prevalence of DM in residents aged 18 to 69 years has increased from 8.2% in 2004 to 11.3% in 2010. More than half (51.4%) of residents who were found to have DM were previously undiagnosed [1].

Healthy aging of the left ventricle in relationship to cardiovascular risk factors: The Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA)
ConclusionOur results support that LV structure and function are better preserved in senescent hearts in the absence of traditional cardiovascular risk factors, and such protection is more prominent in men than in women.

Association between Atrial Fibrillation and Three-Year Mortality in Nondiabetic Patients with Acute First-Ever Ischemic Stroke
Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a risk factor for atrial fibrillation (AF) and is known to be an important risk factor for death from stroke. The influence of AF on long-term outcomes in patients with ischemic stroke remains controversial. To clarify the exact influence of AF on stroke outcome and exclude the effect from DM, we investigated the influence of AF on the 3-year outcomes of nondiabetic patients with acute first-ever ischemic stroke.

Ask JJ: Type 2 Diabetes
Dear JJ: My doctor just diagnosed me with pre-diabetes. Type 2 diabetes runs in my family, but I will not accept it as my fate. You've written about sugar's detrimental impact, so how can I get this under control so it doesn't blow up into full-blown diabetes? Diabetes doesn't happen overnight or linearly, but when your metabolic machinery breaks, serious havoc ensues. The massive repercussions can become deadly. Every time you eat, you raise blood sugar, which triggers your pancreas to release a hormone called insulin. Every food raises blood sugar, but high-sugar impact foods do it big time. Your pancreas "secretes s...

Nuts, seeds, beans are good steps toward a plant-based diet
A plant-based diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and healthy plant oils can help men stay healthy and ward off heart disease, stroke, diabetes, cancer, and other chronic conditions. Adding fresh fruits and vegetables is a no-brainer for adopting a plant-based diet, but don't neglect nuts and seeds along with beans and other legumes, recommends the December 2014 Harvard Men's Health Watch. Choosing the right portions is important, too. Nuts and seeds are rich in vegetable oils, which pack nine calories per gram. That means eating too many nuts and seeds in a day can deliver an overload of calories. But it doesn'...

Relationship between idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss and subsequent stroke
Conclusions:Idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss did not increase stroke risk. The average annual stroke incidence rate after idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss was comparable with that in the general Taiwanese population. The study patients experienced stroke because they carried the risk factors for stroke. In patients with modified risk factors for stroke, efforts should be made to prevent stroke rather than idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss.

A Melioidosis Patient Presenting with Brainstem Signs in the Emergency Department
Conclusions: In light of this case, patients with identifiable risk factors, especially underlying diabetes, a history of positive soil contact, and those who lived in an endemic area or ever traveled to an endemic area, and who present themselves with fever and neurologic deficit or multi-organ involvement, should have melioidosis considered in the differential diagnosis.
