Delayed-onset dementia after stroke or transient ischemic attack.
DISCUSSION: Severe SVD contributes importantly to delayed-onset dementia after stroke and/or TIA. Future clinical trials aiming to prevent delayed-onset dementia after stroke and/or TIA should target this high-risk group. PMID: 27327542 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Elucidating the Association Between Depressive Symptoms, Coronary Heart Disease, and Stroke in Black and White Adults: The REasons for Geographic And Racial Differences in Stroke (REGARDS) Study Epidemiology
Conclusions Proximal depressive symptoms were associated with incident fatal and nonfatal stroke and CVD death even after controlling for multiple explanatory factors, further supporting the urgent need for timely management of depressive symptoms.

Specificities of Ischemic Stroke Risk Factors in Arab-Speaking Countries
Background: Stroke is largely preventable, and therefore, a better understanding of risk factors is an essential step in reducing the population stroke rate and resulting disease burden in Arab countries.Summary: We performed 2 separate analyses in 2 similar populations of patients with noncardioembolic ischemic stroke. This first involved 3,635 patients in the Outcomes in Patients with TIA and Cerebrovascular disease (OPTIC) registry (followed for 2 years), with baseline collection of the usual risk factors and 5 socioeconomic variables (unemployment status, residence in rural area, living in fully serviced accommodation,...

Association of obesity and diabetes with physical activity and fruit and vegetable consumption in stroke survivors
ConclusionsResults indicated a joint effect of obesity and diabetes with low PA among stroke survivors. Regardless of obesity –diabetes status, however, prevalence of low FV consumption and low PA exceeded 50%. Targeted interventions that modify these unhealthy behaviours among stroke survivors should be explored.

Stroke Belt Birth State and Late-life Cognition in The Study of Healthy Aging in African Americans (STAR)
CONCLUSION: Black Americans born in the Stroke Belt had worse late-life cognition than those born elsewhere, underscoring the importance of early-life exposures on brain health.PMID:34509621 | DOI:10.1016/j.annepidem.2021.09.001

Empowering Stroke Survivors: Understanding The Role of Multidisciplinary Rehabilitation
Stroke is 1 of the leading causes of disability worldwide, with someone having a stroke every 40 seconds in the United-States.1 A stroke can occur by clot that interrupts blood flow in the brain. It can also be caused by a burst of a blood vessel that causes bleeding in the brain. There are also other unknown causes of stroke which occur less frequently. A stroke causes brain cells to die as they no longer receive oxygen and nutrients from the blood. Some of the most common risk factors of stroke are high blood pressure, high cholesterol, heart diseases, diabetes, smoking, physical inactivity, and obesity.

Tooth Loss May Predict Poor Cognitive Function in Community-Dwelling Adults without Dementia or Stroke: The PRESENT Project.
Abstract Periodontal disease is a potential predictor of stroke and cognitive impairment. However, this association is unclear in adults aged 50 yr and above without a history of stroke or dementia. We evaluated the association between the number of teeth lost, indicating periodontal disease, and cognitive impairment in community-dwelling adults without any history of dementia or stroke. Dental examinations were performed on 438 adults older than 50 yr (315 females, mean age 63±7.8 yr; 123 males, mean age 61.5±8.5 yr) between January 2009 and December 2010. In the unadjusted analysis, odds ratios (OR) of cogniti...

Less Than Ideal: Trends in Cardiovascular Health Metrics among US Stroke Survivors, NHANES 1988-2010 (S12.006)
CONCLUSIONS: Fewer than 1% of US stroke survivors display ideal cardiovascular health. Although BP and lipid control improved over the last 2 decades, rates of obesity, diabetes, and poor diet increased. Stroke survivors who are Black, socioeconomically disadvantaged, or relatively less educated, appear to be at significantly greater odds of having poor cardiovascular health, highlighting the need for targeted interventions. Remote thalamic microstructural abnormalities related to cognitive function in ischemic stroke patients.
Conclusion: Our findings support the hypothesis that ischemic stroke lesions are associated with remote thalamic diffusion abnormalities, and that these abnormalities can contribute to cognitive dysfunction 3 months after a cerebrovascular event. The association of atopy with incidence of ischemic heart disease, stroke, and diabetes
Abstract Allergy is a systemic inflammatory disease that could theoretically affect the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and diabetes through inflammatory pathways or mast cell-induced coronary spasm. Whether allergy is associated with an increased risk of CVD and diabetes is largely unknown. We investigated the association between atopy as assessed by IgE sensitization, a well-accepted biomarker of allergy, and incidence of ischemic heart disease, stroke, and diabetes in five Danish population-based cohorts. A total of 14,849 participants were included in the study. Atopy was defined as serum-specific IgE po...

Variation in Knowledge of Stroke Warning Signs by Age and Presence of Conventional Risk Factors: A Community Health Survey in Korea.
CONCLUSION: Stoke risk factors are increasing among young people; they still have poor knowledge about SWSs. More education is needed to increase appropriate treatment, especially in young people with stroke-related risk factors. PMID: 32740227 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]
