Genetic loci, rs17817449 and rs6567160, known for obesity and the risk of stroke events among middle-aged and older Chinese people
ConclusionThe G allele of rs17817449 at the FTO, not rs6567160 at the MC4R, was associated with a decreased risk of fatal stroke occurrence; its functional role in stroke should be explored in relatively healthy middle-aged to older Chinese people.

Strengthening stroke prevention and awareness in the Philippines: a conceptual framework
This article focuses on stroke prevention and awareness in the Philippines, a country grappling with high stroke incidence and limited healthcare resources. The two-pronged approach presented by the authors aims to address the challenges of stroke care by combining community-based prevention and targeted public awareness campaigns. The community-based stroke prevention component involves personalized risk factor assessments and tailored interventions conducted at local health centers. By identifying modifiable risk factors such as hypertension, diabetes, smoking, and elevated cholesterol levels, healthcare professionals ca...

Long Distance Travel Potentiates Other Novel Risk Factors in PFO Related Strokes - "Economy Class Strokes" (S55.006)
ConclusionPFOs are highly prevalent in the general population, but they are usually only discovered after a stroke - so effective risk assessment and prevention are key. Our results suggest that both air and land travel are risk factors for PFO-related stroke, and the coexistence of additional risk factors potentiates risk associated with immobilization. These results help to individualize care: high-risk patients may benefit from pre-travel education, or DVT prophylaxis.Study Supported by: NIH/NINDSDisclosure: Dr. Ning has nothing to disclose. Survey and Risk Factors for Lower Urinary Tract Storage Symptoms in Middle‐Aged and Older Stroke Patients in Urban China
ConclusionsOur study identified not only putative risk factors for LUTS in middle‐aged and elderly stroke patients, but genuine factors including snoring, living environment and educational background that increased the odds of storage symptoms as well. We identified that regular exercise and living with their children were protective factors for storage symptoms in stroke patients.

Association between Socioeconomic Status and Major Risk Factors of Stroke: Thai Epidemiologic Stroke (TES) Study.
CONCLUSION: The differences in the prevalence of the major risk factors of stroke between SES groups were important, and should be considered in the development ofpolicies or tailored strategies for prevention of stroke. PMID: 26437530 [PubMed - indexed for MEDLINE]

Smoking is Associated with All-Cause Mortality after Stroke (P1.121)
Conclusions: Stroke survivors who continue to smoke are nearly 2.5 times more likely to die of all causes compared to those who never smoked and nearly twice as likely to die of all causes compared to former smokers. These findings underscore the importance of smoking cessation counseling in order to improve outcomes after stroke.Disclosure: Dr. MacCallum has nothing to disclose. A Review of Risk Factors for Cognitive Impairment in Stroke Survivors.
Authors: Mohd Zulkifly MF, Ghazali SE, Che Din N, Singh DK, Subramaniam P Abstract In this review, we aimed to identify the risk factors that may influence cognitive impairment among stroke survivors, namely, demographic, clinical, psychological, and physical determinants. A search from Medline, Scopus, and ISI Web of Science databases was conducted for papers published from year 2004 to 2015 related to risk factors of cognitive impairment among adult stroke survivors. A total of 1931 articles were retrieved, but only 27 articles met the criteria and were reviewed. In more than half of the articles it was found tha...

Prestroke treatment of stroke risk factors: A cross-sectional survey in central Nigeria
Conclusions: A high rate of under-diagnosis and under-treatment of hypertension, hyperlipidemia and atrial fibrillation contributes to the stroke burden in sub-Saharan Africa, especially among women. Public health measures including mass media campaigns could help reduce the burden of stroke.

Stroke risk in treatment of type 2 diabetes in China: a 7 year retrospective cohort study
Publication date: November 2016 Source:The Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology, Volume 4, Supplement 1 Author(s): Rui Liu, Qing Wang, Vivian Szeto, Andrew Barszczyk, Tianru Jin, Edoardo Mannucci, Hong-Shuo Sun, Zhong-Ping Feng Background Diabetes and stroke are leading causes of death and disability, and major public health concerns in China, which accounts for 25% of patients with diabetes worldwide. Type 2 diabetes is an independent risk factor for cerebral ischaemia and accounts for about 20% of stroke cases. We previously showed that KATP channel activation provides neuroprotection against cerebral ischaemia and t...

The PAr index, an indicator reflecting altered vitamin B-6 homeostasis, is associated with long-term risk of stroke in the general population: the Hordaland Health Study (HUSK)
ConclusionsHigher plasma PAr was independently associated with increased risk of incident stroke in all participants and across all subgroups stratified by conventional risk predictors. Our novel findings point to and expand the range of inflammation and immune activation processes that may be relevant for the pathogenesis and prevention of stroke. This trial was registered at clinicaltrials.gov as NCT03013725.

The Impact of Vascular Risk Factors on Post-stroke Cognitive Impairment: The Nor-COAST Study
Discussion: Our findings indicate that a focal stroke lesion might be related to pathophysiological processes leading to global cognitive impairment. The poorer prognosis of PSCI in patients with vascular risk factors emphasizes the need for further research on complex vascular risk factor interventions to prevent PSCI.

A Decade of Racial and Ethnic Stroke Disparity: An Insight from Nhanes (P03.151)
CONCLUSIONS: The greater prevalence of stroke in AA compared to NHW is better explained by variables that reflect the diagnosis and control of important vascular risk factors. These results identify targets for interventions to reduce this disparity.Disclosure: Dr. Gutierrez has nothing to disclose.

Diabetes, myocardial infarction and stroke are distinct and duration-dependent predictors of subsequent cardiovascular events and all-cause mortality in older men.
Conclusions: In older men, increasing duration of diabetes predicts stable increases in all-cause and MI-related mortality and a progressively higher risk of stroke deaths. Prior MI was associated with increased risk of subsequent MI, and prior stroke with subsequent stroke, particularly in the 10-20 years following the first event. Diabetes is a duration-dependent risk factor for cardiovascular events which influences outcomes differently from prior vascular disease. PMID: 25548977 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]
