Long-term trends and health impact of PM2.5 and O3 in Tehran, Iran, 2006-2015.
Abstract The main objectives of this study were (1) investigation of the temporal variations of ambient fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and ground level ozone (O3) concentrations in Tehran megacity, the capital and most populous city in Iran, over a 10-year period from 2006 to 2015, and (2) estimation of their long-term health effects including all-cause and cause-specific mortality. For the first goal, the data of PM2.5 and O3 concentrations, measured at 21 regulatory monitoring network stations in Tehran, were obtained and the temporal trends were investigated. The health impact assessment of PM2.5 and O3 was pe...

Estimation and Prediction of Avoidable Health Care Costs of Cardiovascular Diseases and Type 2 Diabetes Through Adequate Dairy Food Consumption: A Systematic Review and Micro Simulation Modeling Study.
CONCLUSION: Our analysis demonstrated that increasing dairy foods consumption to recommended levels would be associated with reductions in healthcare costs. Further randomized trial studies are required to investigate the effect of dairy foods intake on cost of CVD and T2DM in the population. PMID: 29738265 [PubMed - in process]

Cardiovascular Disease in Iran in the Last 40 Years: Prevalence, Mortality, Morbidity, Challenges and Strategies for Cardiovascular Prevention.
Abstract Four decades ago, Iran encountered rapid sociodemographic and economic transitions. This review was carried out to investigate the trend of cardiovascular disease (CVD) prevalence, mortality and morbidity, relevant challenges and suggestions for prevention of CVD. In Iran, the most prevalent causes of death have transited from infectious and diarrheal diseases in 1960 to CVD few decades ago. CVD was the first leading cause of mortality and a million disability adjusted life years (DALYs) led to 46% of all deaths and 20%-23% of the burden of disease in Iran. Ischemic heart disease and stroke are considered...

Single polypill reduces risk of heart attacks and strokes, study finds
Large trial held in Iran of inexpensive medication combining four common drugsA cheap, single pill taken once a day that combines four common drugs is safe and reduces the risk of events such as heart attacks, strokes and sudden death in people over the age of 50, research has found. The study, the first large-scale trial to date, looked at the effectiveness of a so-called polypill – a four-in-one therapy containing drugs to lower cholesterol and blood pressure that was first proposed more than 15 years ago. The researchers found those taking the polypill had a more than 30% lower risk of serious heart problems than those...

Heart attacks and the efficacy of polypills – a hard pill to swallow? | Letters
Dr Peter Trewby questions the risk-reduction figures of the Iran study andOliver Lepen says the focus must be on preventing disease, not medicationYour headline (Single polypill reduces risk of heart attacks and strokes, study finds, 23 August) should really have been tempered by quoting the absolute rather than the relative risk-reduction figures. The 34% reduction in major cardiac events you quote is calculated from “on the ground” reduction in events from 8.8% over five years in those not on the polypill to 5.9% in those receiving it – that is a 2.9% chance of benefit over five years to the individual and with no e...

Burden of non-communicable diseases in Iran: past, present, and future
AbstractIran, as an in-transition country, tackled communicable diseases and now is confronting emerging challenges of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in the path to reach health for everyone at all ages by 2030. Across Iran, death-averting treatments of NCDs have been expanded recently which might cause a shift toward a greater share of years lived with disability (YLDs) compared to years of life lost (YLLs) in the disability-adjusted life years of NCDs. Since the management of disability differs from the reduction of mortality in terms of public health policies, depicting the current picture of the burden of NCDs is pri...

Longitudinal association of dietary fat intake with cardiovascular events in a prospective cohort study in Eastern Mediterranean region
We examined the association of dietary fats intake with the 13-year risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) among Iranian population. Totally 5432 participants of Isfahan Cohort Study (ICS) aged ≥ 35 years were included in the current study. The frequency of dietary fats including hydrogenated vegetables oil (HVO), non-hydrogenated vegetables oil (nHVO), olive oil, ghee, and animal fats during the preceding year were assessed using a validated food frequency questionnaire. After adjustment for potential confounders, individuals in the top quartile of HVO tended to have 68% greater risk for myocardial infarction compared wit...

Spatial patterns and temporal variations of traffic-related air pollutants and estimating its health effects in Isfahan city, Iran
AbstractIsfahan as an important industrial city has faced with air pollution recently. Thus, we assessed the spatial and temporal trends of ambient PM2.5, CO, SO2, and O3 and for estimating their health effect on Isfahan citizens between March 2018 and March 2019 through the AirQ+ software. Our results showed that citizens of Isfahan in almost 240, 167, and 134 of the days in the year has exposure to PM2.5, SO2, and O3 higher than the WHO daily guideline, respectively. Daily variations of PM2.5, CO, and SO2 concentration showed the increasing trend of pollutants in the morning to evening. The maximum concentrations of O3 w...

Non-communicable diseases in the southwest of Iran: profile and baseline data from the Shahrekord PERSIAN Cohort Study
CONCLUSIONS: The SCS provides a platform for epidemiological studies that will be useful to better control NCDs in the southwest of Iran and to foster research collaboration. The SCS will be an essential resource for identifying NCD risk factors in this region and designing relevant public health interventions.PMID:34903205 | DOI:10.1186/s12889-021-12326-y

Health impact assessment and evaluation of economic costs attributed to PM < sub > 2.5 < /sub > air pollution using BenMAP-CE
This study aimed to quantify health effects and associated economic values of reducing PM2.5 air pollution using BenMAP-CE in Qom in 2019. The air quality data were acquired from Qom Province Environmental Protection Agency, and the population data were collected from Qom Province Management and Planning Organization website. The number of deaths due to Stroke, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, Lung Cancer, and Ischemic Heart Disease attributable to PM2.5 were estimated using BenMAP-CE based on two control scenarios, 2.4 and 10 μg/m3, known as scenarios I and II, respectively. The associated economic effect of premat...

The relationship between glucose intolerance status and risk of hospitalization during two decades of follow-up: Tehran lipid and glucose study
CONCLUSION: Pre-diabetes, NDM, and KDM were associated with increased hospitalization rates during long-term follow-up. Interventions such as lifestyle modification or pharmacological therapies aiming to slow down the pre-diabetes and fair control of diabetes might potentially decrease the rate of hospitalization.Key messagesNDM and KDM status both increased rate of all-cause hospitalization.CVD and T2DM complication were the most common cause of hospitalization among patients with diabetes.Hospitalization due to recurrent CHD was significantly higher in men with diabetes than their female counterparts.PMID:36382719 | DOI:...
