Depression and dynamic balance recovery among stroke survivors: A preliminary investigation
Conclusions There is a high prevalence of post-stroke depression among stroke survivors and they have poor dynamic balance. However, owing to small sample of participants in the present study, its premature to draw conclusion on the relationship between depression and dynamic balance recovery among stroke survivors from the result of this study.

The Course and Impact of Poststroke Insomnia in Stroke Survivors Aged 18 to 65 Years: Results from the Psychosocial Outcomes In StrokE (POISE) Study

Conclusions: Chronic insomnia has a negative effect on disability and return to work 1 year after stroke even after adjusting for demographic, psychiatric, and disability factors. Identifying and appropriately targeting insomnia through known effective treatments may improve functional outcomes after stroke.

Hyperforin improves post-stroke social isolation ‑induced exaggeration of PSD and PSA via TGF-β.
In conclusion, the results revealed a previously uncharacterized role of hyperforin in improving post‑stroke social isolation‑induced exaggeration of PSD and PSA and, in turn, promoting hippocampal neurogenesis and cognitive function via TGF‑β. PMID: 30387813 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Title: The effect of pyruvate on the development and progression of post-stroke depression: A new therapeutic approach.
Abstract Post-stroke depression (PSD) is a common and serious complication following stroke. Both stroke and depression have independently been associated with pathologically elevated glutamate levels in the brain's extra-cerebral fluid (ECF). Here we evaluate an alternative therapeutic approach to PSD with pyruvate. Rats were randomly assigned into one of 3 groups: Middle Cerebral Artery Occlusion (MCAO) plus pyruvate treatment, MCAO plus placebo treatment, and sham operated rats. Post-MCAO depressive and anxiety-like behavior was assessed, along with neurological status, brain infarct zone, brain edema, blood br...

Outcome in Survivors of Middle Cerebral Artery Territory Ischemic Stroke: Can it be predicted?
Conclusions: Our findings show that disability assessment late in the first week after onset of stroke using NIHSS accurately forecast outcome at one month after onset of stroke. The MMSE too is not expected to change at 1 month. Those with aphasia are expected to have greater disability. Based on or study we recommend that stroke patients should be assessed with NIHSS and MMSE before discharge, to explain the prognosis of the patient. Also more intense counselling on controlling blood pressure and diabetes as well as abstinence from smoking should be undertaken routinely. PMID: 31309796 [PubMed - in process]

Pharmacological, psychological and non-invasive brain stimulation interventions for preventing depression after stroke.
CONCLUSIONS: The available evidence suggests that pharmacological interventions and psychological therapy may prevent depression and improve mood after stroke. However, there is very low certainty in these conclusions because of the very low-certainty evidence. More trials are required before reliable recommendations can be made about the routine use of such treatments after stroke. PMID: 32390167 [PubMed - in process]

A longitudinal examination of the frequency and correlates of self-reported neurobehavioural disability following stroke.
CONCLUSIONS: In survivors of stroke, self-report of NBD is associated with poor outcomes in function, anxiety, and depression. These findings highlight the importance of routine and comprehensive assessment and intervention to manage NBD following stroke. IMPLICATIONS FOR REHABILITATION Despite relatively infrequent self-reporting, presence of NBD remained stable across a six month follow-up period following rehabilitation which highlights the potential persistent nature of these difficulties. Even mild levels of self-reported NBD were associated with emotional distress in both stroke survivors and their significant others...

Impact of sleep quality on post ‐stroke anxiety in stroke patients
ConclusionsPoor sleep quality before stroke was associated with PSA and may be an independent risk factor of PSA 1  month after AIS onset.

Occurence of Post-Traumatic Stress Symptoms, Anxiety and Depression in the Acute Phase of Transient Ischemic Attack and Stroke
AbstractRates of post-traumatic stress symptoms, anxiety and depression are increased in patients having experienced a transient ischemic attack (TIA) or stroke several months ago. However, data of psychiatric symptoms in the acute phase within the first days after ictus are lacking. In 20 patients with stroke and 33 patients with TIA we assessed disease severity by means of the NIHSS, levels of depression and anxiety by HADS, PTSD-like symptoms by PC-PTSD, quality of life (HrQoL) by SF-12, and coping style by brief COPE Inventory within the first 5  days after ictus. NIHSS on admission was lower in patients with TIA (0...

Neurocognitive, Quality of Life, and Behavioral Outcomes for Patients With Covert Stroke After Cardiac Surgery: Exploratory Analysis of Data From a Prospectively Randomized Trial
CONCLUSIONS: More than one-half of patients undergoing cardiac surgery demonstrated covert stroke. In this exploratory analysis, covert stroke was not found to be significantly associated with neurocognitive dysfunction 1 month after surgery; evidence of impaired quality of life, anxiety, or depression, albeit a type II error, cannot be excluded.PMID:34319914 | DOI:10.1213/ANE.0000000000005690
