Is Continuing Anticoagulation or Antiplatelet Therapy Safe Prior to Kidney Transplantation?
CONCLUSIONS Continuing anticoagulation or antiplatelet was safe in not increasing bleeding complications or perioperative transfusion requirements. Outcomes were similar at 3 and 6 months among groups. This strategy avoids exposing patients to risk of thrombosis if treatment is held and simplifies proceeding to transplantation.PMID:34580271 | DOI:10.12659/AOT.931648

NICE issues warning over dangerous IV drip use
New guidelines from the health watchdog the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) on the use of intravenous (IV) drips have prompted a flurry of headlines, with The Guardian reporting that, "Thousands of patients [are] dying from incorrect use of IV drips", and The Daily Telegraph claiming that, "Tens of thousands harmed in hospital by IV drip blunders". Both newspapers present misleading figures that have been taken out of context. Their stats, which state that one in three patients die from too much fluid within days of surgery, are taken from the National Confidential Enquir...

Medical adjuvant treatment to increase patency of arteriovenous fistulae and grafts.
CONCLUSIONS: The meta-analyses of three studies for ticlopidine (an anti-platelet treatment), which all used the same dose of treatment but with a short follow-up of only one month, suggest ticlopidine may have a beneficial effect as an adjuvant treatment to increase the patency of AV fistulae and grafts in the short term. There was insufficient evidence to determine if there was a difference in graft patency between placebo and other treatments such as aspirin, fish oil, clopidogrel, PRT-201, dipyridamole, dipyridamole plus aspirin, warfarin, and sulphinpyrazone. However, the quality of the evidence was low due to short f...

Periodontal maintenance following active specialist treatment: Should patients stay put or return to primary dental care for continuing care? A comparison of outcomes based on the literature
ConclusionWithin the limitations of the data available, it appears that specialist PM is effective in sustaining periodontal stability following active specialist intervention. There is limited evidence that PDC provides the same level of care; however, the limited comparative data available suggest that outcomes could be slightly worse in PDC.

Increased understanding of this phenomenon, along with improved education and communication to professionals and families, is required.
