Survivors of childhood cancer have high-risk of recurrent stroke
(University of California - San Francisco) A new study from the UCSF Pediatric Brain Center shows that childhood cancer survivors suffering one stroke have double the risk of suffering a second stroke, when compared with non-cancer stroke survivors.

Potential therapeutic and protective effect of curcumin against stroke in the male albino stroke-induced model rats
Publication date: Available online 27 June 2017 Source:Life Sciences Author(s): Yuanyuan Zhang, Yi Yan, Yi Cao, Yongtao Yang, Qing Zhao, Rui Jing, Jiayi Hu, Juan Bao Aims The present study was carried out to understand the therapeutic effect of curcumin (CUR) against stroke in the experimental animal model. The study investigates the healing effect of CUR on mitochondrial dysfunction and inflammation. Materials and methods Male albino, Wistar strain rats were used for the induction of middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO), and reperfusion. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was used for the determination of inter...

Protective Effects of Spatholobi Caulis Extract on Neuronal Damage and Focal Ischemic Stroke/Reperfusion Injury
AbstractNeuronal apoptotic cell death plays an important role in many neurological disorders, including Alzheimer ’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, and ischemic stroke. Spatholobi Caulis (SC) has been widely used in traditional herbal medicine for the treatment of cancer, inflammation, viral infection, and anemia. However, the protective effects of SC extract (SCE) against apoptotic cell death in the brain h ave not been reported. We investigated the protective effects of SCE against neuronal injury etoposide-induced neurotoxicity and in rats subjected to focal transient ischemic stroke middle cerebral artery occlusion ...

Overexpression of Egr2 and Egr4 protects rat brains against ischemic stroke by downregulating JNK signaling pathway.
CONCLUSION: Upregulation of Egr2 and Egr4 could demote the activation of JNK/c-JUN pathway and the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines in MCAO rats, so that Egr2 and Egr4 might be potential targets for ischemic stroke in future. PMID: 29580816 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Angiopoietin-1 Mimetic Peptide Promotes Neuroprotection after Stroke in Type 1 Diabetic Rats.
CONCLUSION: Decreased neuroinflammation and reduced BBB leakage may contribute, at least in part, to vasculotide-induced neuroprotective effects after stroke in T1DM rats. PMID: 30124060 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

A Hallmark Clinical Study of Cord Blood Therapy in Adults with Ischemic Stroke.
Abstract The therapeutic application of human umbilical cord blood cells has been an area of great interest for at least the last 25 years. Currently, cord blood cells are approved for reconstitution of the bone marrow following myeloablation in both young and old patients with myeloid malignancies and other blood cancers. Translational studies investigating alternative uses of cord blood have also shown that these cells not only stimulate neurogenesis in the aged brain but are also potentially therapeutic in the treatment of adult neurodegenerative disorders including amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, Alzheimer's di...

Electroacupuncture Attenuates Inflammation after Ischemic Stroke by Inhibiting NF- κB-Mediated Activation of Microglia.
In this study, we observed the effects of electroacupuncture at Baihui (GV20) and Dazhui (GV14) on microglial activation and inflammation in the cortical ischemic penumbra (IP) of permanent middle cerebral artery occlusion (pMCAO) rats. It was found that electroacupuncture inhibited the degeneration and necrosis of microglia in the cortical IP and ameliorated mitochondrial damage. Immunofluorescence and western blot analysis showed that microglia were in a resting state or weakly activated in the normal brain. After cerebral ischemia, the expression of microglial markers (Iba-1 and CD11b) increased, and NF-κB p65, IL-1β,...

Isolation and Purification of Self-Renewable Human Neural Stem Cells from iPSCs for Cell Therapy in Experimental Model of Ischemic Stroke
Methods Mol Biol. 2022;2389:165-175. doi: 10.1007/978-1-0716-1783-0_14.ABSTRACTNeural stem cell therapy has been galvanized by the discovery of pluripotent stem cells. The possibility to generate specialized central nervous system-specific differentiated cells using human somatic cells engineered to become induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) was a game changer. This technology has broad applications in the field of regenerative medicine, in vitro disease modeling, targeted drug discovery, and precision medicine. Currently, iPSCs are one of the most promising cell sources amenable for commercialization and off-the-shelf ...

Electroacupuncture promotes microglial M2 polarization in ischemic stroke via annexin A1
CONCLUSION: The current study provides strong evidence that EA treatment has protective effects against ischemic stroke in the MCAO/R mouse model and that the mechanism likely involves the promotion of M2 polarization in microglia via ANXA1.PMID:34894768 | DOI:10.1177/09645284211057570
