Cancers, Vol. 15, Pages 255: Post-Compulsory Education in Teenagers and Young Adults Treated for Brain Tumors in Childhood: A Swedish Nationwide Registry-Based Study
rglund The risk of late complications after a brain tumor in childhood is high. Both the tumor itself and the treatments give rise to sequelae that affect daily life activities. In this registry study, we explored post-compulsory education, i.e., further education following the nine compulsory years in school, in 452 cases born 1988–1996 and diagnosed with a brain tumor before their fifteenth birthday. They were compared with 2188 individual controls who were not treated for cancer. Significantly fewer teenagers and young adults treated for brain tumors in childhood attended high school or university comp...

Weekly Web Review in Toxicology #3
Was Pablo Neruda poisoned: The journal Nature posted an article asking whether, at this late date, science is capable of determining whether the Nobel-prize-winning Chilean poet Pablo Neruda was poisoned. Neruda’s death in 1973 occurred less than 2 weeks after a coup d’etat in Chile deposed Socialist President Salvador Allende and installed a right-wing dictatorship led by Augusto Pinohcet. The death was officially attributed to prostate cancer at the time, but recent allegations have raised the possibility of poisoning. This week, Neruda’s remains were exhumed for testing. Nature’s corresponde...

Worse outcomes for patients undergoing brain tumor and cerebrovascular procedures following the ACGME resident duty-hour restrictions.
Conclusions The implementation of duty-hour restrictions correlated with an increased risk of postoperative complications for patients undergoing brain tumor and cerebrovascular neurosurgical procedures. Duty-hour reform may therefore be associated with worse patient outcomes, contrary to its intended purpose. Due to the critical condition of many neurosurgical patients, this patient population is most sensitive and likely to be negatively affected by proposed future increased restrictions. Adapting the coping in deliberation (CODE) framework: A multi-method approach in the context of familial ovarian cancer risk management
Previous research suggests that emotions influence appraisal of future events, that emotions and coping are integral parts of decision processes and that medical decisions are in fact coping behaviours aimed at regulating a health threat and associated emotions [1–4]. To date, however, decision-making theorists have paid little attention to emotions and coping in healthcare decision-making.

Renewed U.S.-Cuba Relations: Saving American Lives and Limbs?
Some 29.1 million Americans have diabetes, nearly 8 million unaware of their condition. Between 70,000 and 80,000 diabetics become amputees every year from one of the disease's most nefarious complications: diabetic foot ulcers. As a result of the recent opening to Cuba, these amputees -- over half of whom will otherwise die within five years of amputation -- may be thrown a lifeline by Cuban innovation. Because of our estrangement from the Caribbean nation, most may be unaware that its biotech industry is booming, since the 1980s one of the 'big three' in the global South (with Brazil and India). Its latest R&D brea...

The Feasibility and Educational Value of Hear My Voice , a Chaplain-Led Spiritual Life Review Process for Patients with Brain Cancers and Progressive Neurologic Conditions
Abstract Research continues to establish the importance of spirituality for many persons with medical illnesses. This paper describes a pilot study titled, “Hear My Voice,” designed to provide an opportunity for persons with progressive neurologic illnesses, including brain tumors and other neurodegenerative diseases, to review and discuss their spirituality with a board-certified chaplain, and to prepare a spiritual legacy document (SLD). First, we provide background information that underscores the importance of such a project for this patient population that is particularly vulnerable to cognitive impairme...

Patient Education: A Comparison of Teaching Strategies for Patients With Brain Neoplasms.
Abstract BACKGROUND: A diagnosis of cancer, specifically a brain neoplasm, can be daunting and confusing to patients and their family members. It is important to find ways to provide education about diagnosis, symptoms, medications, treatment, and side effects in a usable and retrievable format. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to examine the impact of the following three teaching strategies on patients' knowledge and understanding of their diagnosis. METHODS: This was a prospective pre-/post-test pilot study including patients who had been diagnosed with brain neoplasms. FINDINGS: Among 30 pat...

Hospital teaching status associated with reduced inpatient mortality and perioperative complications in surgical neuro-oncology
ConclusionTHs are performing more brain tumor surgeries over time with lower rates of inpatient mortality and perioperative complications even after controlling for hospital case volume. These results suggest a shift in neuro-oncology practice patterns favoring THs to optimize patient outcomes especially at the highest volume centers.

What Types of Memory Impairments are There in Children?
Discussion Memory is an important part of what distinguishes higher order species from others. Memory also is part of one’s self-identity. Difficulties in short-term memory can make common, everyday tasks difficult for the person experiencing the problem particularly if it recently occurred and the person’s long-term memory is intact. Difficulties with long-term memory can also have problems when language, events or even one’s own identity are affected. For some people the memory loss is temporary but for others, memory impairments are permanent and must be accepted and accommodated as part of the overall...

Crowdfunding for anticancer therapies: an analysis of non-US GoFundMe pages
ConclusionOur GoFundMe analysis has identified that crowdfunding platforms are predominantly used for requesting financial support, but worryingly, a large proportion are requesting immunotherapy for unlicensed indications and alternative therapies with no evidence. Future efforts to improve patient education, and possibly online donation page regulation, are required to better manage this route of cancer funding.

What Are the Causes of Secondary Amenorrhea?
Discussion The first sign of puberty in females is breast budding (Tanner stage II) which normally occurs from 8-13 years. Menarche usually occurs within 2 years of breast budding occurring usually at Tanner stage III-IV breast development. Menarche occurs for most girls from 10-15 years. Most cycles range between 21-45 days. Age > 13 years without acquisition of secondary sexual characteristics, > 15 years before menarche or 5 years after acquisition of secondary sexual characteristics or cycles longer than 45 days are indications for evaluation. After menarche is it not uncommon to have anovulatory cycles that are ...

What Causes Anisocoria?
Discussion Anisocoria is a common physical finding caused by the mechanical imbalance of the iris dilator (sympathetic innervation causing dilation) and sphincter muscles (parasympathetic innervation causes miosis). Which pupil is abnormal is important to determine. “Anisocoria greater in the light signifies an abnormal large pupil, whereas anisocoria in the dark indicates an abnormal small pupil.” The pupillary size should be noted along with any changes with accommodation, extra ocular movements and lighting. The time it takes to revert to the baseline pupillary size can also be helpful. Any ptosis, lacrimati...

What Are Common Gastrointestinal Polyposes in Children?
Discussion Bloody stools or blood in the diaper is a relatively common complaint in general pediatrics. For most patients it is often a minor concern. Commonly it is a transient problem (e.g. rectal fissure caused by constipation or trauma) or often not blood (e.g. urate crystals in the diaper, food, menses, etc.). Real blood does occur with an identifiable cause such as long distance running or heavy exercise, or milk protein allergy/sensitivity that improves with a milk-restricted diet. Many more serious causes are associated with heavier or more recalcitrant bleeding, increased defecation, abdominal pain, poor eating an...
