Cancer Incidence Among Patients of the U.S. Veterans Affairs Health Care System: 2010 Update.
CONCLUSIONS: Although the composition of the VA population is shifting and includes a larger number of women, registry data indicate that incident cancers in VA in 2010 were most similar to those observed among U.S. men. Consistent reporting of VACCR data is important to provide accurate estimates of VA cancer incidence. This information can be used to plan efforts to improve quality of cancer care and access to services. PMID: 28810986 [PubMed - in process]

Acute Oncology Care: A narrative review of the acute management of neutropenic sepsis and immune-related toxicities of checkpoint inhibitors.
Abstract Cancer care has become increasingly specialized and advances in therapy have resulted in a larger number of patients receiving care. There has been a significant increase in the number of patients presenting with cancer related emergencies including treatment toxicities and those directly related to the malignancy. Suspected neutropenic sepsis is an acute medical emergency and empirical antibiotic therapy should be administered immediately. The goal of empirical therapy is to cover the most likely pathogens that will cause life-threatening infections in neutropenic patients. Patients with febrile neutrope...

BRIM ‐P: A phase I, open‐label, multicenter, dose‐escalation study of vemurafenib in pediatric patients with surgically incurable, BRAF mutation‐positive melanoma
ConclusionsA recommended and effective dose of vemurafenib for patients aged 12–17 years with metastatic or unresectable melanoma was not identified. Extremely low enrollment in this trial highlights the importance of considering the inclusion of adolescents with adult cancers in adult trials.

Treatment and Prevention of Pediatric Sunburn.
Abstract Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States, and risk for melanoma is greatly increased with a serious sunburn in childhood or adolescence. Skin cancer also is one of the most preventable cancers, as sun exposure is an almost entirely modifiable risk factor. Proper skin protection should start early in life when infants begin to be exposed to the outdoors. [Pediatr Ann. 2019;48(6):e213-e214.]. PMID: 31185109 [PubMed - in process]

American College of Sports Medicine Roundtable Report on Physical Activity, Sedentary Behavior, and Cancer Prevention and Control
Conclusions Collectively, there is consistent, compelling evidence that physical activity plays a role in preventing many types of cancer and for improving longevity among cancer survivors, although the evidence related to higher risk of melanoma demonstrates the importance of sun safe practices while being physically active. Together, these findings underscore the importance of physical activity in cancer prevention and control. Fitness and public health professionals and health care providers worldwide are encouraged to spread the message to the general population and cancer survivors to be physically active as their a...
