Identification of genes associated with melanoma metastasis
Publication date: Available online 21 November 2015 Source:The Kaohsiung Journal of Medical Sciences Author(s): Tao Qiu, Hongyi Wang, Yang Wang, Yu Zhang, Qiang Hui, Kai Tao The aims of the study were to identify the differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between primary melanomas and metastasis melanomas (MMs), and to investigate the mechanisms of MMs. The microarray data GSE8401 including 31 primary melanomas and 52 MMs were downloaded from Gene Expression Omnibus. DEGs were identified using the Linear Models for Microarray Data package. The functional and pathway enrichment analyses were performed for DEGs. Iden...

Review questions recent official vitamin D guidance
Conclusion So, who's right? The authors of the BMJ review are certainly correct in their argument that, ideally, we can get all the vitamin D we need through a combination of diet and sensible exposure to sunlight. They are also right that the evidence does not show that people with normal levels of vitamin D benefit from taking supplements. But we don't live in an ideal world. The truth is many people in the UK eat unhealthy, vitamin D-poor diets and also don't get enough exposure to sunlight. A sensible approach would be to consider taking vitamin D supplements as recommended, but also be alert for possible signs of exc...

Fucoidan reduced the invasion of oral squamous cell carcinoma cells and modified their effects to macrophages
In this study, we analyzed the effects of fucoidan on invasion of OSCC cells, and their regulation to macrophages, trying to evaluate its role as a potential therapy for OSCC. CAL27 and THP-1-derived macrophages were used as models for OSCC cells and tumor-infiltrated macrophages in the in vitro study, respectively. The effects of fucoidan on invasion of OSCC cells and their recruitment to macrophages were analyzed by transwell assay. KIF4A siRNA transfection was performed to investigate its role in fucoidan-modulated OSCC cells invasion. CCL3-neutralizing antibody was added into the conditioned medium of OSCC cells to eva...

LB895 Readability, Understandability, and Actionability of Online Patient Education Materials for Sunscreen
Most adults in the United States obtain health information online. It is crucial that online patient education materials (PEMs) are easily interpreted in order to successfully impact patients ’ health behaviors. This is especially important for sunscreen PEMs, as proper use is associated with decreased risks of melanoma, non-melanoma skin cancers, and photoaging. American Medical Association recommends that PEMs be written at the sixth grade or lower reading level. We analyzed the read ability of PEMs for sunscreen in order to identify opportunities to optimize PEMs.

Screening for head and neck tumors in patients with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma and vice versa: a nationwide survey among medical specialists
Conclusions This Dutch nationwide survey revealed a lack of knowledge and different perspectives among specialists about screening to detect SPTs in ESCC and HNSCC patients. Adequate education seems essential to increase awareness among specialists and improve SPT detection, independent of the need for implementation of screening for SPTs in ESCC and HNSCC patients. Here, we identified and evaluated videos on SCS provided on YouTube. YouTube was searched in May 2022 for German terms related to SCS. Two authors evaluated the videos of the first three pages that met the predefined eligibility criteria. The quality of the videos ´ information was evalua...
