Computed tomographic morphometric analysis of lateral inclination C1 pedicle screw for atlantoaxial instability patients with a narrow C1 posterior arch
This study is performed to determine anatomic feasibility of trajectory L and help select an optimal screw trajectory in treating patients with AAI with a narrow C1 posterior arch. Sixty patients who underwent cervical three dimensional-computed tomography (3D-CT) were chosen from the hospital's picture archiving and communication system (PACS). Aquilion Multi 64 helical CT was used to perform CT examinations and measurements on patients. Based on CT images, the trajectory L and M for each C1 pedicle were established. Posterior arch height was measured on C1 coronal image. The medullary cavity width along trajectory M was ...

Hepatitis C core antigen highly correlated to HCV RNA
This study investigates the correlation between the HCV-Ag immunoassay and the current gold standard of Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) ribonucleic acid (RNA) molecular assay. Stored sera of 221 consecutive treatment-naive patients tested anti-HCV positive were selected to undergo both HCV-Ag immunoassay and HCV RNA molecular assay. Active infection status and HCV genotype were determined using both assays, and correlation was calculated using a logarithmic scale. Among 221 anti-HCV-positive sera, 197 were positive for both HCV Ag (≥3 fmol/L) and HCV RNA (>15 IU/mL), 22 were negative for both tests, while 2 were po...

Tumor necrosis factor-α mediated pain hypersensitivity through Ret receptor in resiniferatoxin neuropathy
This study used resiniferatoxin (RTX), an ultrapotent analog of capsaicin, to generate a mouse model of SFN, leading to marked hindpaw edema (p = 0.013) and parallel the release of TNFα (p = 0.014), which was associated with the upregulation of Ret(+) neurons (p = 0.0043) and partial depletion of TNFR1 caused by colocalization with TRPV1 depleted by RTX. Pharmacological intervention of TNFα with etanercept (Enbrel®, Wyeth), a clinical application of TNFα blockers, relieved neurogenic inflammation and caused a reduction in hindpaw thickness (p = 0.03) and TNF&alp...

Prognostic value of immunohistochemically detected p53 in adjuvant chemotherapy-treated triple negative breast cancer
This study investigates the prognostic value of immunohistochemically detected p53 in TNBC patients who received adjuvant chemotherapy. We reviewed the clinicopathologic features of 1088 TNBC patients who received curative surgery and adjuvant chemotherapy. Immunohistochemically, nuclear staining of>10% was defined as p53 “positive.” Of the total 1088 TNBC patients, 709 (65.2%) had no lymph node metastasis (N0). Among the N0 patients, 408 (57.5%) were p53- positive (p53+), and 301 (42.5%) were p53- negative (p53-). p53 + tumors showed a tendency for better breast cancer-specific survival (BCSS, p&n...

Correlations of MMP-2 and MMP-9 gene polymorphisms with the risk of hepatopulmonary syndrome in cirrhotic patients: A case-control study
Publication date: Available online 25 July 2018Source: The Kaohsiung Journal of Medical SciencesAuthor(s): Jian-Wei Liu, Dong-Qiong ChenAbstractHepatopulmonary syndrome (HPS) increases the mortality of patients who suffered from liver cirrhosis, especially patients plagued by severe hypoxemia. Gene polymorphisms are reported to be related to the risk of HPS in cirrhotic patients. Thus, our study aims to elucidate the correlation between MMP-2 and MMP-9 gene polymorphisms and HPS in cirrhotic patients. A total of 152 cirrhotic patients suffering from HPS as well as another 152 cirrhotic patients without HPS were recruited. ...

Fatty oil from Securidaca inappendiculata exerted therapeutic effects on adjuvant-induced arthritis in mice via suppression on fibroblast-like synoviocyte
In this study, we analyzed its chemical composition with methyl esterification based GC–MS method, and investigated the therapeutic potentials on adjuvant-induced arthritis (AA) in mice. MTT and western-blot methods were employed to investigate its effects on proliferation rate and protein expressions in MH7A cells, respectively. It was revealed SIF was mainly comprised of saturated and monosaturated fatty acids, and the two predominant compounds were palmitic acid (36.89%) and oleic acid (31.12%). Treatment with SIF at 100 mg/kg resulted in significant alleviation of AA severity in mice, together with reduced s...
