Diagnosis and management of a peripheral T-cell lymphoproliferative disease in an American pine marten < em > (Martes americana) < /em >
This report describes the diagnosis and management of a peripheral T-cell lymphoproliferative disease, presumably peripheral lymphoma, in an American pine marten (Martes americana). This is the first report of this disease and its successful treatment in a pine marten.PMID:37138708 | PMC:PMC10150559

PEG-asparaginase treatment  regimens for acute lymphoblastic leukaemia in children: a network meta-analysis
CONCLUSIONS: We were not able to conduct a network meta-analysis, and could not draw clear conclusions because it was not possible to rank the interventions. Overall, we found that different numbers of doses of PEG-asparaginase probably result in little to no difference in event-free survival across all studies. In two studies, we found that a higher number of PEG-asparaginase doses probably increases pancreatitis and asparaginase-associated toxicities.PMID:37260073 | PMC:PMC10230854 | DOI:10.1002/14651858.CD014570.pub2

Firefighting and Cancer: A Meta-analysis of Cohort Studies in the Context of Cancer Hazard Identification
CONCLUSIONS: There is epidemiological evidence to support a causal relationship between occupational exposure as a firefighter and certain cancers. Challenges persist in the body of evidence related to the quality of exposure assessment, confounding, and medical surveillance bias.PMID:37389311 | PMC:PMC10300491 | DOI:10.1016/j.shaw.2023.02.003

Epidemiologic studies of glyphosate and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma: A review with consideration of exposure frequency, systemic dose, and study quality
Glob Epidemiol. 2023 Feb 25;5:100101. doi: 10.1016/j.gloepi.2023.100101. eCollection 2023 Dec.ABSTRACTI reviewed the epidemiologic literature for glyphosate and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) in the context of the frequency of exposure in each epidemiologic study, systemic dose from biomonitoring studies of applicators, and aspects of study quality. Nine studies were identified, 7 case control and 2 cohort, by a literature search and a review of reference lists from published studies and recent regulatory evaluations. All but one study involved exposure scenarios that were so infrequent that they are not credible for cancer ...

Adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma
Summary Adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATL) is a malignancy of mature CD4+ T-cells caused by human T-cell lymphotropic virus type 1 (HTLV-1). Twenty million people are believed to be infected throughout the world, mostly in Japan, Africa, the Caribbean, and South America, particularly in Brazil and Peru. ATL affects about 5% of infected individuals and is classified in the following clinical forms: acute, lymphoma, primary cutaneous tumoral, chronic (favorable and unfavorable), and smoldering (leukemic and non-leukemic). Although it is considered an aggressive disease, there are cases with a long progression. We emphasize...

Galactocele, Pitfall for the Evaluation by 18F-FDG PET/CT
A high 18F-FDG uptake was found in mammary lesions in a 36-year-old woman who underwent a PET/CT scan for initial staging of diffuse large B-cell lymphoma. The patient has given birth 2 months ago and was breastfeeding. Ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration of 1 lesion yielded creamy liquid consistent with milk and confirmed the diagnosis of galactocele.

Reproductive factors, exogenous hormone use and risk of B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma in a cohort of women from the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition.

Previous studies have yielded conflicting results, been underpowered to assess many lymphoma subtypes, or lacked detailed information on relevant exposures. Within the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition cohort, we analyzed comprehensive data collected at baseline (199...

Potent Inhibition of Zika Virus Replication by Aurintricarboxylic Acid
In this study, we evaluated ATA as a potential antiviral drug against ZIKV replication. The antiviral activity of ATA against ZIKV replication in vitro showed median inhibitory concentrations (IC50) of 13.87 ± 1.09 μM and 33.33 ± 1.13 μM in Vero and A549 cells, respectively; without showing any cytotoxic effect in both cell lines (median cytotoxic concentration (CC50)> 1,000 μM). Moreover, ATA protected both cell types from ZIKV-induced cytopathic effect (CPE) and apoptosis in a time- and concentration-dependent manner. In addition, pre-treatment of Vero cells with ATA for up to 72 h also...

HTLV: a stigmatizing infection?
This article aims to discuss the concept of stigma and its repercussions on persons living with HTLV. The discussion is based on a literature review on the theme and the authors' experience with care for persons affected by the infection and illness. The study found that both HTLV carrier status and HTLV-related illness can be stigmatizing for individuals, who feel inferior for being infected with a potentially serious and even fatal disease, although incompletely understood and loaded with derogatory stereotypes. This situation can have negative repercussions on access to health services, treatment adherence, and pursuit ...

Diagnostic Approaches and Established Treatments for Adult T Cell Leukemia Lymphoma
Adult T-cell leukemia-lymphoma (ATL) is a distinct mature T-cell malignancy caused by human T-cell leukemia/lymphotropic virus type I (HTLV-1) endemic in some areas in the world. HTLV-1 transmits through mother-to-child infection via breastfeeding, sexual intercourses, and blood transfusions. Early HTLV-1 infection, presumably through mother’s milk, is crucial in developing ATL. The estimated cumulative risk of the development of ATL in HTLV-1 carriers is a few percent after transmission from their mothers. The median age of ATL onset is about 70 in Japan and is now rising, whereas an overall mean age in the mid-forties ...
