Is a Matched Unrelated Donor Search Needed for All Allogeneic Transplant Candidates?
ConclusionsRace, haplotype frequency and disease status at the time of MUD search influence probability to identify a MUD and receive a transplant. Patients with low likelihood to receive a MUD transplant may proceed to a haploidentical transplant as soon as indicated, as this approach does not appear to compromise transplant outcomes.DisclosuresKonopleva: Stemline Therapeutics: Research Funding. Brain Citrullination Patterns and T Cell Reactivity of Cerebrospinal Fluid-Derived CD4+ T Cells in Multiple Sclerosis
We report many of them for the first time. For the already described citrullinated proteins MBP, GFAP, and vimentin, we could identify additional citrullinated sites. The number of modified proteins in MS white matter was higher than control tissue. Citrullinated peptides are considered neoepitopes that may trigger autoreactivity. We used newly identified epitopes and previously reported immunodominant myelin peptides in their citrullinated and non-citrullinated form to address the recognition of CSF-infiltrating CD4+ T cells from 22 MS patients by measuring proliferation and IFN-γ secretion. We did not detect ...

Relationship Between State-Level Google Online Search Volume and Cancer Incidence in the United States: Retrospective Study
Conclusions: Cancer incidence is correlated with online search volume at the state level. Search patterns were temporally associated with cancer awareness months and celebrity announcements. Online searches reflect public awareness. Advancing understanding of online search patterns could augment traditional epidemiologic surveillance, provide opportunities for targeted patient engagement, and allow public information campaigns to be evaluated in ways previously unable to be measured.

Yoga in addition to standard care for patients with haematological malignancies.
CONCLUSIONS: The currently available data provide little information about the effectiveness of yoga interventions for people suffering from haematological malignancies. The finding that yoga may be beneficial for the patients' quality of sleep is based on a very small body of evidence. Therefore, the role of yoga as an additional therapy for haematological malignancies remains unclear. Further high-quality randomised controlled trials with larger numbers of participants are needed to make a definitive statement. PMID: 24919720 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Question 2: Does the timing of central line placement in relationship to the initiation of acute lymphoblastic leukaemia therapy change the risk of thrombosis or infection?
Question Does the timing of central line placement in relationship to the initiation of acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) therapy change the risk of thrombosis or infection? Clinical scenario You are the haematology registrar doing ward rounds with your consultant. A 3-year-old with newly diagnosed ALL is expected to start induction chemotherapy in a few days. Your consultant questions if we should consult surgery for line placement prior to induction chemotherapy or if we should wait until remission is achieved. Structured question In children with ALL (population), does placing a central line at the end of induction (i...

The search for cis-regulatory driver mutations in cancer genomes.
Authors: Poulos RC, Sloane MA, Hesson LB, Wong JW Abstract With the advent of high-throughput and relatively inexpensive whole-genome sequencing technology, the focus of cancer research has begun to shift toward analyses of somatic mutations in non-coding cis-regulatory elements of the cancer genome. Cis-regulatory elements play an important role in gene regulation, with mutations in these elements potentially resulting in changes to the expression of linked genes. The recent discoveries of recurrent TERT promoter mutations in melanoma, and recurrent mutations that create a super-enhancer regulating TAL1 expression...

Proteomics Versus Clinical Data and Stochastic Local Search Based Feature Selection for Acute Myeloid Leukemia Patients ’ Classification
This study proposes a meta-heuristic framework using stochastic local search (SLS) combined with random forest (RF) where the aim is to specify the most important genes and proteins leading to the best classification of Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) patients. First we use a stochastic local search meta-heuristic as a feature selection technique to select the most significant proteins to be used in the classification task step. Then we apply RF to classify new patients into their corresponding classes. The evaluation technique is to run the RF classifier on the training data to get a model. Then, we apply this model on the t...

ATP-Binding Cassette transporters' gene expression in pediatric patients with acute leukemia; a comprehensive analysis of published reports through PubMed search engine.
Authors: Mehrvar N, Akbari ME, Rezvany MR, Abolghasemi H, Saberynejad J, Mehrvar A, Faranoush M, Keramatinia AA, Shekarriz-Foumani R, Movafagh A Abstract Multidrug resistance based on ABC transporters' gene expression is one of the most important health challenges through chemotherapy of patients. This resistance can cause relapse or treatment failure. The goal of this conducted study was to evaluate the results of published reports which considered ABC transporters' gene expression in pediatric patients with acute leukemia. PubMed as a free search engine was chosen. The following Mesh terms were used as: "ATP-bind...

A Case of Acute Leukemia Following Remission of COVID-19 Infection; an Urge to Search for a Probable Association
Arch Acad Emerg Med. 2021 Jul 24;9(1):e51. eCollection 2021.ABSTRACTMany aspects of Covid-19 infection, especially its complications and long-term health consequences are still unknown. Several reports concerning concomitant covid-19 infection and hematological disorders have been published recently. We aim to present a unique case of acute myeloid leukemia in a 61-year-old man with a previous history of covid-19 infection 40 days ago, with near complete resolution of signs and symptoms attributable to covid-19 infection. After 3 weeks, the patient presented again with progressive weakness, nausea, vomiting, and epigastric...

CD177 Expression on Neutrophils: In Search of a Clonal Assay for Myeloid Neoplasia by Flow Cytometry.
Conclusions: Skewed low neutrophil CD177(%) is highly associated with clonal myeloid disorders, particularly myelodysplasia, and may be useful for detecting clonal myeloid disorders. PMID: 24124144 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

A comparative study of Hasford score and Sokal index in prognostication of the novo chronic myeloid leukemia patients and a search for new prognostic markers.
Conclusions: This study shows that Hasford score predicts survival of the patients better than Sokal index. However, multicentric study over a large population is needed to give the final verdict. PMID: 24152497 [PubMed - in process]
