Looking beyond the surface: Muir Torre syndrome
Arch Clin Cases. 2023 Sep 20;10(3):119-122. doi: 10.22551/2023.40.1003.10255. eCollection 2023.ABSTRACTMuir-Torre Syndrome (MTS) is associated with multiple visceral malignancies. Initial presentation may be a benign skin tumor mimicking a sebaceous cyst. This case report highlights the importance of early diagnosis, genetic testing, and multidisciplinary screening. A 67-year-old man was diagnosed with MTS following excision of a skin lesion (sebaceoma). He was declined both screening colonoscopy and genetic testing. Subsequently, advanced colon cancer was found following presentation with iron deficiency anemia, which ult...

Therapeutic benefits of prophetic medicine remedies in treating hematological diseases (A review article)
Am J Blood Res. 2023 Aug 15;13(4):130-142. eCollection 2023.ABSTRACTHematological disorders are common medical ailments constituting an important cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, which may be managed efficiently using different prophetic medicine remedies as adjuvants to current therapeutics. Prophetic medicine includes the body of knowledge about medicine that has been derived from the deeds, customs (sunnah), ahadith (sayings), actions, and agreements of Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him. This review article aims at exploring the magnitude of therapeutic benefits of prophetic medicine remedies as adjuvant tr...

Quality of life and nutritional status of a group of post-operative head and neck cancer patients
CONCLUSIONS: these results suggest that the use of EN in post-operative HNC patients could have a positive effect on the nutritional status and quality of life of these patients. However, further research is needed to optimize the nutritional support in these patients in order to avoid malnutrition and improve their well-being.PMID:37732341 | DOI:10.20960/nh.04638

In Search of Immune System Differences in Long-Lived Mammals
What are the mechanisms that allow long-lived mammals to be long-lived? It remains to be seen as to whether it will be cost-effective and of sizable benefit to isolate specific genetic differences that can be used as a basis for therapies in humans, but it isn't a terrible idea to conduct the search. Clearly cancer suppression is an interesting topic, and one it might well be possible to build novel therapies based on the study of whales and elephants. Another good place to start is the operation of the immune system. The age-related decline of immune function is clearly important to the onset and progression of age-relate...

Evaluation of genetic variants in ferroptosis-related genes and house dust mite-induced allergic rhinitis risk
CONCLUSIONS: These findings suggest that the genetic variants in ferroptosis-related genes ENPP2 and EPAS1 may increase HDM-induced AR risk and serve as potential predictors of HDM-induced AR susceptibility.PMID:37724950 | DOI:10.1016/j.intimp.2023.109707

Functionalized manganese iron oxide nanoparticles: a dual potential magneto-chemotherapeutic cargo in a 3D breast cancer model
Nanoscale. 2023 Sep 19. doi: 10.1039/d3nr02816j. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTLocalized heat generation from manganese iron oxide nanoparticles (MIONPs) conjugated with chemotherapeutics under the exposure of an alternating magnetic field (magneto-chemotherapy) can revolutionize targeted breast cancer therapy. On the other hand, the lack of precise control of local temperature and adequate MIONP distribution in laboratory settings using the conventional two-dimensional (2D) cellular models has limited its further translation in tumor sites. Our current study explored advanced 3D in vitro tumor models as a promising altern...

Stimuli-Responsive Codelivery System Self-Assembled from < em > in Situ < /em > Dynamic Covalent Reaction of Macrocyclic Disulfides for Cancer Magnetic Resonance Imaging and Chemotherapy
ACS Appl Mater Interfaces. 2023 Sep 18. doi: 10.1021/acsami.3c10245. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSupramolecular self-assembly has gained increasing attention to construct multicomponent drug delivery systems for cancer diagnosis and therapy. Despite that these self-assembled nanosystems present surprising properties beyond that of each subcomponent, the spontaneous nature of co-self-assembly causes significant difficulties in control of the synthesis process and consequently leads to unsatisfactory influences in downstream applications. Hence, we utlized an in situ dynamic covalent reaction based on thiol-disulfide excha...

Hydroxyl radical generations form the physiologically relevant Fenton-like reactions
Free Radic Biol Med. 2023 Sep 15:S0891-5849(23)00637-8. doi: 10.1016/j.freeradbiomed.2023.09.013. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIron(II) species can participate in the Fenton and Fenton-like reactions to generate the hydroxyl radical that can oxidatively damage biomolecules and induce oxidative stress in biological systems. Many diseases, including neurodegeneration, cardiovascular disease and cancer, are associated with oxidative stress. However, it is proposed recently that hydroxyl radical would not be generated from the Fenton reaction under physiological conditions and thus would not cause oxidative stress in biologic...

Network pharmacology and molecular docking to explore the mechanism of Sheng Xue Bao mixture against iron deficiency anemia
Medicine (Baltimore). 2023 Sep 15;102(37):e35012. doi: 10.1097/MD.0000000000035012.ABSTRACTBased on network pharmacology and molecular docking, we investigated the mechanism of action of Sheng Xue Bao mixture (SXBM) in treating iron deficiency anemia (IDA). We screened the HERB and traditional Chinese medicine systems pharmacology database and analysis platform databases to identify the active ingredients and targets of SXBM. The targets associated with "iron deficiency anemia" were collected from GeneCards, TTD, and OMIM databases. A component-target interaction network was constructed using Cytoscape 3.8.2. The protein-p...
