A Decade of Analysis of Unplanned Extubation Etiology in Trauma Patients Including the Impact of the COVID Pandemic
CONCLUSIONS: UEs were decreased by education with ongoing tracking, and UEs from patient factors were associated with better outcome than other etiologies. Workforce changes produced by the COVID-19 pandemic did not change the rate of UEs.PMID:37751930 | DOI:10.4187/respcare.10868 (Source: Respiratory Care)

Aptamer-Based Strategies to Address Challenges in COVID-19 Diagnosis and Treatments
Interdiscip Perspect Infect Dis. 2023 Jul 31;2023:9224815. doi: 10.1155/2023/9224815. eCollection 2023.ABSTRACTCoronavirus disease (COVID-19), a highly contagious and rapidly spreading disease with significant fatality in the elderly population, has swept across the world since 2019. Since its first appearance, the causative agent, severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), has undergone multiple mutations, with Omicron as the predominant circulating variant of concern at the moment. The gold standard for diagnosis of COVID-19 by real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) to detect the virus is laborio...

Sensors, Vol. 23, Pages 6222: Acoustic Lung Imaging Utilized in Continual Assessment of Patients with Obstructed Airway: A Systematic Review
Ali Imran Smart respiratory therapy is enabled by continual assessment of lung functions. This systematic review provides an overview of the suitability of equipment-to-patient acoustic imaging in continual assessment of lung conditions. The literature search was conducted using Scopus, PubMed, ScienceDirect, Web of Science, SciELO Preprints, and Google Scholar. Fifteen studies remained for additional examination after the screening process. Two imaging modalities, lung ultrasound (LUS) and vibration imaging response (VRI), were identified. The most common outcome obtained from eleven studies was positive observations ...

Pediatric Tracheostomy Safety: Implementation of an Airway Safety Placard
CONCLUSIONS: Given the limitations of a low survey response rate, our findings suggest that an educational airway safety placard initiative can be a simple, feasible, and low-cost quality improvement tool to enhance airway safety and possibly decrease potentially life-threating complications among pediatric patients with a tracheostomy. The implementation of the tracheostomy airway safety survey at our single institution warrants a larger multi-center study and validation of the survey.PMID:37402583 | DOI:10.4187/respcare.09634 (Source: Respiratory Care)

Recurrent laryngeal papillomatosis with pulmonary involvement: case report
We present the case of a 13-year-old male with a history of laryngeal papillomatosis since the age of two years. The patient showed respiratory distress and multiple stenosing nodules in the larynx and trachea, as well as several pulmonary cysts identified on chest CT. The patient underwent excision of the papillomatous lesions and tracheostomy. Then, the patient received a single dose of intravenous bevacizumab 400 mg and respiratory therapies with favorable evolution, without recurrences during follow-up.PMID:37377229 | DOI:10.17843/rpmesp.2023.401.12169 (Source: Revista Peruana de Medicina de Experimental y Salud Publica)
