Molecules, Vol. 27, Pages 6360: Phytochemical Composition, Antibacterial, Antioxidant and Antidiabetic Potentials of Cydonia oblonga Bark
The objective of this study was to evaluate the phytochemical composition, and antibacterial, antioxidant, and ant-diabetic potentials of methanolic extracts of Cydonia oblonga bark. The Cydonia oblonga bark extraction was fractionated through HPLC and seven purified fractions labeled as F1, F2, F3, F4, F5, F6, and F7 were obtained. The HPLC-UV analysis of methanolic extract showed the presence of a number of possible compounds. The GC-MS and HPLC analysis confirmed the presence of the following bioactive compounds in the crude extract and purified fractions: malic acid, mandelic acid, quercetin, caffeic acid, catechin hyd...

Volatile Constituents of Some Selected Plant Species Traditionally Used as Tea in the Sharri Mountains (Kosovo)
ScientificWorldJournal. 2022 May 16;2022:2594195. doi: 10.1155/2022/2594195. eCollection 2022.ABSTRACTThe study evaluates the chemical composition of the volatile constituents of ten plant species traditionally used as herbal tea in the Sharri Mountain regions (Kosovo and North Macedonia). Volatile constituents responsible for the flavour and fragrance of selected species (Crataegus monogyna, Cydonia oblonga, Malus sylvestris, Matricaria chamomilla, Morus alba, Morus nigra, Rosa canina, Sambucus nigra, Tilia cordata, and Vaccinium myrtillus) were separated and then identified using GC-MS, whereas GC-FID is employed for the...

Molecules, Vol. 27, Pages 2462: Phenolic Acids and Flavonoids in Acetonic Extract from Quince (Cydonia oblonga Mill.): Nutraceuticals with Antioxidant and Anti-Inflammatory Potential
In this study polyphenols from quince fruit were extracted with aqueous acetone at different ratios. A polyphenol profile was identified and quantified by LC-ESI-QqQ. The antioxidant capacity (ORAC and DPPH) and anti-inflammatory effect (inhibition of COX-2 cyclooxygenase) were evaluated in vitro. The results indicated an effect of the aqueous acetone ratio on the extraction of polyphenolic compounds. The higher extraction yields of polyphenolic compounds were attained with 60–75% aqueous acetone. However, extracts obtained with 85% aqueous acetone promoted higher antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. Op...

Nano-hydroxyapatite incorporated quince seed mucilage bioscaffolds for osteogenic differentiation of human adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells
In this study, the therapeutic hydrocolloid quince seed mucilage (QSM) from Cydonia oblonga Miller fruit is enriched with needle-like nano-hydroxyapatite (nHAp) crystals to fabricate a novel biomimetic osteogenic bioscaffold. The molecular weight (Mw) of water-based extracted QSM was measured with GPC (8.67 × 105 g/mol), and the composite blend was prepared at a ratio of 1:1 (w/w) QSMaq and nHAp. The porous bioscaffolds were manufactured by the freeze-drying method, and evaluated in-depth with advanced analyses. The XRD, ATR-FTIR, SEM-EDX, and elemental mapping analyses revealed a uniform coated semi-crystalline structure...

3D printing and properties of cellulose nanofibrils-reinforced quince seed mucilage bio-inks
Int J Biol Macromol. 2021 Oct 16;192:1098-1107. doi: 10.1016/j.ijbiomac.2021.10.078. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPlant-based hydrogels have attracted great attention in biomedical fields since they are biocompatible and based on natural, sustainable, cost-effective, and widely accessible sources. Here, we introduced new viscoelastic bio-inks composed of quince seed mucilage and cellulose nanofibrils (QSM/CNF) easily extruded into 3D lattice structures through direct ink writing in ambient conditions. The QSM/CNF inks enabled precise control on printing fidelity where CNF endowed objects with shape stability after freeze-...
