Make This Fall-Themed Tequila Drink Tonight!
Welcome to Thirsty Thursday! Each week we toast the coming weekend with an adult beverage. What are you imbibing? Show us @SELFmagazine and @MarjorieKorn. Cheers! Now that fall is officially here, fruity beverages with frilly umbrellas are like wearing white after Labor Day: a faux pas. But that doesn't mean you have to retire your bottle of tequila. Herradura Tequila was kind enough to share with us this fall cocktail that includes pumpkin ale -- a perfect complement to flannel and football season. Mass Shootings and Mental Illness…
The irony didn’t escape me that I am listening to a Smashing Pumpkins song about Thorazine as I write this. I caught on one of those news channels this morning that was promoting the idea that the mentally ill shouldn't be allowed to own guns.  You must pass a sanity or similar test to purchase a pistol.  I personally have a Glock 9mm pistol for protection which is standard issue for most police departments. There is an estimated one million schizophrenics living in the United States.  One schizophrenic goes off on a shooting spree and the rest of us get shunned and ostracized.  One in a million. I ...

3 Unique Ways to Eat Pumpkin Seeds
With fall quickly approaching, there are pumpkins in every grocery store and market already -- and definitely pumpkin spice lattes. [Ed. note: SELF web team shoutout! - RJ]  A great way to enjoy the flavor -- without cracking a whole one open -- is to indulge in the superfood pumpkin seeds, which are a great source of fiber and heart-healthy fats. But if you're looking beyond the shell casing, try one of these fresh takes on pumpkin seeds to reap their flavor and benefits -- while enjoying 'em in a new light.  (Source: The ND Blog: Notes from the Nutritionista by Monica Reinagel, L.D.N., C.N.S.)

It’s Friday and you deserve a treat, so go grab yourself one and sit down to enjoy this week’s Best of Our Blogs. just the two of us
I'm in a Starbucks with a pumpkin spice latte and my laptop now like some goddamn stereotype. Man, even I hate myself right now.Starbucks always makes me think of working hard. I studied for all my board exams in Starbucks-es, from Step I at that Starbucks on 103nd and Broadway all the way up through my Anesthesia Oral Boards at the location on Monroe and 8th. The difference between Starbucks-es in New York and Atlanta, by the way? The Starbucks-es in New York serve you much, much faster. I also wrote my entire book at the Starbucks on 29th and Park, which if you need to do work is (or at least was five years ago) an ideal...

Low-FODMAP Diet: A New Fad?
By Amy Campbell Back in 2009 (can it really be that long ago?), I wrote a short series on irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). IBS is a condition (not a disease) characterized by a number of symptoms including bloating, cramping, gas, diarrhea, and constipation. About one in five Americans has IBS, and having it can range from being mildly annoying to downright debilitating. There are different kinds of treatments available, including changing one's diet, exercising, stress reduction, and medication. A treatment from down under People who have IBS will tell you that sometimes the above approaches work for them, and sometimes th...

Pura d’or Hair Loss Prevention Premium Organic Shampoo: Look at the label
Believe it or not this hair loss prevention shampoo is a top beauty seller on Amazon.com. Let’s look at the label to see if it has a chance in hell of actually preventing hair loss. The good news is the shampoo uses one of the mildest cleansing ingredients you can buy – sodium cocoyl isethionate.  The bad news is it costs $22 for 16 ounces which is expensive. There are other shampoos based on the same ingredient which you can get for much cheaper. More  good news: if you read the claims carefully you’ll see that it really is just a shampoo and not a drug product. More bad news: they throw in all sorts o...

RapidLash Eyelash & Eyebrow Enhancing Serum: Look at the label
Just because a product is a best beauty seller on Amazon.com doesn’t necessarily really mean that it does what it says. Case in point, look at the active ingredient in Revitalash. The active ingredient is Isopropyl Cloprostenate (a cousin of Bimatoprost, the drug which has been approved by the FDA to enhance eyelash growth.) But just because it’s a related compound doesn’t mean it functions the same way. Our good friend Paula Begoun the Cosmetic Cop points out that the isopropyl version is actually considered to be a hair-conditioning cosmetic ingredient. That means it hasn’t been proven to work th...

The Healthful Vegan Diet
‘Let your food be your medicine, and your medicine be your food.’ ~Hippocrates By Leo Babauta Eat plants. Those two words are the best things I’ve learned about diet, and if you stick to that, you’re likely be pretty healthy. That said, eating a vegan diet (no animal products) doesn’t necessarily equate to a healthy diet, despite what many believe. Yes, vegans on average are healthier and leaner than the average person. But that’s an average — there are unhealthy vegans. How is that possible? You can eat lots of sweets, fried foods, processed foods, foods with white flour (br...

A Squeal and then a Joyous Bark…
I was sitting at this computer last night dicking around on the Internet and listening to the latest Smashing Pumpkins CD for the hundredth time. Maggie squealed a few times and then started to bark joyously. “Charlie’s here!” I exclaimed and Maggie just went nuts. “Just what are you two doing?” Charlie asked me as he stepped through my front door. “I’ve got you a McDonald’s Big Mac value meal, Maggie a hamburger plain, and your daddy wants me to see you take your medications.” I was so glad to see Charlie that I couldn’t complain about the coddling medications part. “Horsefly’s at the bowling all...

The 5 Stages of Intimacy in a Relationship
This guest article from YourTango was written by Zoe Hicks. I want to preface this by saying that although there are no typical couples, there do tend to be intimacy stages in a relationship. Within the grief process, according to the Kübler-Ross model, we have denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. These stages do not always happen in this particular order. We may have anger, then denial, then acceptance, then bargaining, and then depression — then circling back around to acceptance. Grief and intimacy seem to be made of the same fabric — the intensity, the dullness, the gains, and the lo...
