Mass Shootings and Mental Illness…

The irony didn’t escape me that I am listening to a Smashing Pumpkins song about Thorazine as I write this. I caught on one of those news channels this morning that was promoting the idea that the mentally ill shouldn't be allowed to own guns.  You must pass a sanity or similar test to purchase a pistol.  I personally have a Glock 9mm pistol for protection which is standard issue for most police departments. There is an estimated one million schizophrenics living in the United States.  One schizophrenic goes off on a shooting spree and the rest of us get shunned and ostracized.  One in a million. I blame this hypersensitivity on the media which profits off of the news coverage of these events.  The sad fact is that most of these gun toting schizophrenics are much more likely to turn the gun upon themselves rather than others. I guess this is going to be one of those instances where the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few.
