Wheat Belly Holiday Recipes 1
At the start of their Wheat Belly journey, many people resign themselves to a life without gravy, biscuits, or pumpkin pie, having to make the best of holidays devoid of enjoyment and indulgence. Just eat your dry turkey meat and lettuce leaves! It’s not true. You can indeed have all your holiday dishes. But we are going to recreate them without wheat, without other grains, without use of gluten-free junk carbohydrates (no cornstarch, tapioca starch, potato starch, or rice flour), with little to no added sugars, and no other problem ingredients. Minus all the undesirable ingredients, in fact, pumpkin pie, biscuits, a...

Nutty Raisin Crunch Bars
Rich and crunchy, these bars are substantial enough to serve as a meal by themselves, as well as a healthy, filling snack. The recipe yields a carbohydrate exposure of around 10 grams “net”carbs per bar. (“Net”carbs = total carbs –fiber, a value that only includes digestible carbohydrates.) If you would like to limit carbohydrates to a lower level, reduce or eliminate the raisins; leaving them out cuts the net carb exposure by half. Nutty Raisin Crunch Bars   Print Author: Dr. William Davis Serves: 12 Ingredients 2 cups shredded unsweetened coconut 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon ¼ cup coconut oil, me...

In the Aftermath of the Pittsburgh Mass-Stabbing, Where Do We Draw the Line To Feel Safe?
In Pittsburgh there was a mass-stabbing at a high school today. At least twenty victims, but no deaths. In a small way this is comforting. At least parents in Pittsburgh will not be grieving for the loss of their children tonight. Since anti-gun people jump on mass-shootings immediately, though, I’m wondering if it’s too soon to demand all kitchen knives be regulated. Perhaps Eric Holder’s gun bracelet idea can be modified so that only authorized, federally registered owners can use knives. Also, we need to do something about weaponized No. 2 pencils. Those things are sharp, ya know. I’m kidding, obviously, but I w...

The 2-In-1 Product I Wish I'd Invented
Did you ever watch Shark Tank on ABC, see a product idea profiled on the show and think, "Dang that's a no-brainer! Why didn't I think of that?" That's just how I felt this morning during a trip to my local Container Store when in the kitchen section I happened upon a line of products from Joseph Joseph. (Not a typo!) Joseph Joseph solves the challenge of serving high-maintenance snacks. You know the culprits; they come to your party, tempt your guests and are a teensy bit of a pain to eat. I'm talking pistachios or peanuts in the shell, salted edamame, olives with pits and shrimp with tails to name a few. All these ite...

Forget the Diet Plans: The No-Brainer Way to Eat Healthy AND Lose Weight
During my life I’ve had a love/hate view of “the meal plan” segment of diet books. I want to make it work, but often it just takes too much time and effort to follow the plan and so I don’t stick with it for more than a couple days. I’ve read many many books and articles on nutrition, food as medicine, and weight loss. In that time I’ve come up with a simple formula that I use to eat healthy and lose/maintain weight. What follows is a simple approach to eating that is both healthy and conducive to losing/maintaining your desired weight. The 5 Pillars of Healthy Eating Remembering...

Locating the "sweet spot" when jokes about tragedy are seen as funny
Damage wreaked by Hurricane Sandy at Bay Head, New Jersey. Image: Skrum / Getty Images. As a tragedy unfolds, only the callous or gauche would joke about it. Yet with time, topics previously off limits come to be seen as fair game for humour. In fact, joke-making about loss and tragedy can be seen as a way to cope, or at least a reflection of coping. For a new study, Peter McGraw and his colleagues have charted people's responses over time to jokes about a real tragedy - Hurricane Sandy, which struck the USA in 2012. The researchers were able to plot the way that the jokes were seen as funny prior to landfall, th...

Let’s bring up family health history during the holidays
As we plan for holidays with family and friends, many are reminded to avoid religion and politics as topics of conversation, and while it may be advisable to skip these, there is another potentially uncomfortable topic that I urge everyone to bring up: family health history. Though it may not seem palatable to discuss diabetes and heart disease over servings of pumpkin pie, these conversations can be critical in helping relatives make better-informed decisions about their healthcare and lifestyle choices. Yearning for a Nap, but There's Too Much to Do
By Jan Chait May I take a nap now? It's been busy around here. Real busy. First there was a colonoscopy last Tuesday, then cooking like mad beginning Wednesday, followed closely by Thanksgiving and Hanukkah all at the same time. My granddaughter and her boyfriend were in from college and grandson dearest was hanging around annoying his little sister, with their mother — my daughter — looking on and giggling (thanks a lot). Did I mention the children's friends coming and going? Did you know college students really do bring their dirty laundry home? My computer decided to glitch at the worst possible time: Righ...
