poem
Poem #16Poems are like old picturesWe used to leaf through as kids.A way to make forgotten detailsOf a life come rushing back:Mom and Dad so young,That lumpy pumpkin costume.Birthdays, anniversaries, of course. But even the mundaneTrifles warrant capture. The best pictures are the ones taken For no discernible reason at all,A whimsical forgetfulnessOf the notion a future might exist.I remember the way I felt, exactly,When you smiled on the plane,That purple dress you once wore,The time I snapped oneOf you, deep in introspection,When you thought no one was looking. What ’s captured isn't the image,Only the fleeting way ...

Beyond trick-or-treating: Safe Halloween fun during the COVID-19 pandemic
Since the beginning of the pandemic, we’ve had to find new ways to do almost everything — and the same is true of this year’s Halloween celebrations. Two mainstays of Halloween, trick-or-treating and Halloween parties, could be very risky this year. Going from house to house, sticking your hands in bowls of candy that many other hands have touched, or being close to people indoors or out, are all activities that could spread the virus. Even if people feel perfectly well, there’s no guarantee that they aren’t sick, and therefore contagious. That doesn’t mean we have to ditch Halloween entirely. On the contrary, ...

Both parties have pledged . . .
I got a comment to the effect that both parties have pledged to protect people with pre-existing conditions so that ' s off the table. Here ' s the Republican plan, as tweeted by Cheeto Benito:We will have Healthcare which is FAR BETTER than ObamaCare, at a FAR LOWER COST – BIG PREMIUM REDUCTION. PEOPLE WITH PRE EXISTING CONDITIONS WILL BE PROTECTED AT AN EVEN HIGHER LEVEL THAN NOW. HIGHLY UNPOPULAR AND UNFAIR INDIVIDUAL MANDATE ALREADY TERMINATED. YOU’RE WELCOME!Republicans must state loudly and clearly that WE are going to provide much better Healthcare at a much lower cost. Get the word out! Will always protect pre-...

When to Pick Acorn Squash
Conclusion This is everything you need to know about acorn squash, planting, and harvesting them. Making sure that your first harvest of the squash is going to be successful. Will You Ring the Bell?
During Navy SEALs training, which is really tough, recruits can quit by ringing a bell three times. Then they get a shower and a hot meal, and they’re done with the struggle. No more physical ordeals. No more being wet and sandy. No more sleep deprivation. And no more opportunity to be part of a SEAL team. Afterwards the recruits who quit can offer up any reasons they want, but it doesn’t matter in terms of results. They’ve demonstrated that they will give up on the team, so the team grows stronger when they leave. SEAL training, especially hell week, is a filter. It separates the quitters fro...

Choosing among outrages
I think a lot of people are feeling a sort of mental and emotional paralysis lately as the Trumparian cult commits one atrocity after another. But I have to pick one so I ' m going to the Residentordering the CDC to change the guidelines on Covid-19 testing, so that testing of people who are known to have been exposed is no longer recommended. This was done of course because the Great Pumpkin has the idea stuck in his pea-sized brain that if fewer people are tested, the number of reported cases will be lower. I should not have to explain why this is idiotic. People who do not have symptoms can transmit the virus...

Tyranny
Dr. Black is nonplussed by the people who are outraged about being required to wear masks. You don ' t have to think about it for more than a second to realize that we are legally bound by all sorts of rules intended to protect public health. You can ' t drive above the speed limit -- well, okay, not a whole lot above it -- you can ' t sell contaminated food, you can ' t dump sewage in the river, you can ' t play football without a helmet. To be sure, some people still chafe at seat belt laws and emissions tests, but for the most part we ' ve gotten used to those and they were never the occasion for outraged mas...

The Story of an American Mask Distributor
By SAURABH JHA Seven weeks before President Trump declared COVID-19 a federal emergency heralding the economic lockdown, Jesse’s customers began cutting their orders. Jesse sells garments and cotton, imported predominantly from India, to wholesalers and retailers, big and small, in malls across the North East corridor.  His business had a good January. December was like any December. But February was different.  His customers, reassuring him that it wasn’t personal, were predicting a falling demand for their products because of COVID-19. They may be over reacting, but better shortage than glut, they felt. J...

Batch Blogging
Almost all of the articles I’ve posted this year – or ever, actually – were written on the same day they were published. It’s been my blogging style for the past 16 years to write and edit posts in a single writing session and then to publish them when they’re complete. This year is unusual because it’s the first year that I’ve made a commitment to publish a new post every day of the year, so up until this point, I’ve been writing every day of the year. Very occasionally I’ve written two posts in one day, but nearly all of my posts were published on the same day I wrote them...

Your Giant Pumpkin
One of my favorite business books is The Pumpkin Plan by Mike Michalowicz. It uses the analogy of growing giant pumpkins and applies it to building a business. The basic idea is to figure out who your best customers or clients are, so you can specifically tailor your business to serving them well. Then ideally you’ll attract more people like them and build a thriving business that’s also a joy to run. Here’s the key though: To grow a giant pumpkin, you need to pluck the smaller pumpkins off the vine – whichever pumpkins aren’t good candidates for eventually becoming giant ones. Ultimately yo...

What Are My Strengths?
During some recent morning runs, I’ve been listening to a series of Michael Michalowicz books: The Toilet Paper Entrepreneur, Profit First, Clockwork, and Fix This Next. He also wrote The Pumpkin Plan – one of my all-time favorite business books. In the Toilet Paper Entrepreneur book, there are some questions about identifying your strengths and leveraging them in business. I think I know mine pretty well by now, but this stirred up my curiosity about how my blog readers and customers see my strengths and which particular strengths are most relevant for them. I also got to wondering how I could better use my str...
