MANIC DEPRESSION/PTSD, Dismissed from Medical School, Quitting medical school
Help all. I'd really like some advice. Or suggestions, mostly suggestions. The summer before starting a U.S. allopathic medical school, I had a nervous breakdown after four years of sexual abuse and was psychiatrically hospitalized for two months, then subsequently diagnosed with post traumatic stress disorder and manic depression (bipolar I). Only a couple months later, my father unexpectedly died shortly into the first week of medical school and needless to say, after my first semester I... Behavioral neurology and general psychiatry?
I know behavioral neurologists typically treat or manage psychiatric issues associated with organic, neurological disorders such as psychosis from alzheimers for instance. But can a behavioral neurologist manage psychiatric symptoms of disorders of unknown etiology? Or those without a visible neurological basis such as PTSD or schizophrenia? I'm in a rough situation. Need Advice
So I recently completed an SMP with a GPA of 3.0. My stats in undergrad were a 3.53 with an MCAT of 510. I am wondering if my low SMP GPA will severely hinder my chances. I was having personal issues during my SMP, but they are not issues I wish to bring up during an interview or in a personal statement, mainly due to a PTSD diagnosis I received. I am wondering if it is worth it to apply this year? Is it time for me to give up on medicine? What options are there for me? I have tried... I'm in a rough situation. one question about protecting yourself
I've read a few threads about power imbalance/dominant situations or bad cases in medical school or among other professions. The situation worsens among some individuals. What happens when PTSD or complex feelings last? And those beside you are helpless as well and think it's your own responsibility? (this is terrible) what are ways to protect yourself - how often and how should you speak up at signs of other's negative control over you (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Do you believe a person can have PTSD when the trauma was non-violent?
Next up, after adult ADHD, on the list of fake and phony illnesses that never even crossed my mind in residency, but which I'm starting to encounter in the private insurance worried-well world, is the phenomenon of people claiming to have or getting diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder when the alleged trauma did not involve violence. I was wondering if any of my fellow psychiatry SDNers believe in this.... Do you believe a person can have PTSD when the trauma was non-violent? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Why is EMDR so popular?
Am I missing something? As far as I knew, EMDR has not been found to be any clinically different from CBT and is basically CBT + hocus pocus. Yet, many, many MFTs/LCSWs, psychologists, and psychiatrists that I work with swear by EMDR. I see a lot of trauma and PTSD cases, mostly for medications. I want to refer them to the best therapy possible and I'm feeling some pressure to refer them for EMDR despite my misgivings. Is there more recent research that acknowledges the eye-movements as... Service animals for psychiatric illness
Talking specifically about service animals for anxiety disorders or PTSD. Isn't this kind of thing just a more advanced version of avoidance? In other words, is it counter-productive in the long-run - as the animal is essentially used to distract people from their feared stimuli/emotions? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Marijuana and my health in medical school
Hello, I am a new M1 and I am concerned about a situation that I am not sure I can present to my faculty or advisors. I have been struggling with depression, anxiety, PTSD (veteran here), and I take my meds regularly as prescribed for some time. However, I recently found out that I am eligible for a medical marijuana card in my state. The reason I found out about this was because the side effects of all the meds that I am taking are making it extra difficult for me to stay alert and awake...
