Clinical pet peeves?
What are your clinical pet peeves? My top ones: -People being diagnosed with both MDD and bipolar disorder, without noting that bipolar also explains the MDEs. -Autism (ASD) diagnoses being given on parent report and/or brief, informal observation alone. -PTSD diagnoses with no index traumatic event noted. Passenger sues Southwest Airlines claiming PTSD
Passenger Who Survived A Fatal Flight Is Suing Southwest Airlines I'm curious to hear opinions from those of you involved in forensic work. The incident happened less than two weeks ago. It seems like an extremely quick turnaround to prepare and file a lawsuit, especially when the claim is substantially based on diagnoses that require a sustained period... APA PTSD Treatment Guidelines
Just wanted to start a thread in case anyone else is following the controversy regarding APA's PTSD practice guidelines. I personally am extremely frustrated, so I wanted to vent a little here. I don't know how other people feel, but I personally believe that every issue that has been raised about the guidelines has been addressed more than sufficiently by members of the task force, and that this discussion is perpetuating a lot of harmful myths and ideas about PTSD and its treatment that... De-Prescribing Thread
SDN Pain shamans, lets use this thread to post the good, bad and ugly about opioid deprescribing. We can share our success stories - and failures- and support each other. I look forward to learning new tricks, techniques, and ways to handle the difficult conversations that we have every day. I'll start- 45 yo F with fibromyalgia, PTSD, diffuse pain came to me from PCP on 140 MME, slurring her words, disheveled and disabled, unable to string together a coherent sentence. Three months later,... De-Prescribing Thread (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Stupid question but here we go!
So, like my title warns, I have a stupid question but in the spirit of, "there are no stupid questions," lets give it a go! I'm a student, working on my prereq's for vet school and I have a problem—I have a difficult time with blood and guts. I didn't used to but then I had an incident and I'm working through some PTSD but here's my question: have any of you thrown up in vet school? I can imagine that students have but I'm neurotic and keep thinking, "Oh gawd, what if I'm the only one who... Stupid question but here we go! (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Advice and Support for a Struggling Undergrad?
Hello all, I am currently a 4th year undergrad going for a BSCS and taking EMT classes on the side. My GPA isn't great (2.9 ish) and I have a decent amount of withdraws on my record. I've switched majors twice and therefore have another 2 years or so before earning the bachelors. I've been wrestling PTSD, MDD and ADD during my school career, and would have done much better this semester if not for a boyfriend who was completely unsupportive and jobless. Medicine is more than a passion for... Advice and Support for a Struggling Undergrad? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Seeking advice: how to stand out in competitive programs
I'm putting this in a separate thread outside of "what are my chances" because I'm more seeking specific advice for both myself, and for students who graduated from state schools and feel at a disadvantage applying to traditionally big-name universities. My research interests very broadly are PTSD/ depression as a result of trauma and dissemination of EBT. My primary interests, though, are programs in which I can directly study EBT with war-affected populations (refugees), and I would also... Would you have reported to child's protective services?
Interesting case last night in the OPD. I saw a mother who appeared well at first but was actually psychotic. She thought her husband implanted listening devices in her hear, she was hearing disparaging voices, non-command, and felt old friends and characters in her life was after her. These symptoms are context of long hx of opioid use, PTSD, and some genetic loading of psychosis. What makes this case a bit hairier is the fact she had a 7 year old with her, who she lives alone with. I... Would you have reported to child's protective services? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

HELP! LMHP-E (LPC) to Psychiatric NP or Psychiatrist
Hi Everyone, I have been working with substance use and co-occurring disorders for several years. I am currently in residency for LPC and I am an advanced credentialed addictions counselor (CAADC). In the past year I was blessed to work with children and adults with other mental health issues- PTSD, bipolar, ADHD, etc. In my work I refer clients whom may benefit from medication for a psychiatric evaluation. However, there seems to be a shortage of providers in my area - Richmond, VA., in... HELP! LMHP-E (LPC) to Psychiatric NP or Psychiatrist (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Article on self-help books and therapy. Thoughts?
This article downplays therapy and ignores this part of the article (ugh): Researchers say you might as well be your own therapist "Studies that targeted PTSD or depression (k = 4) had significantly larger effect sizes than those that targeted anxiety or stress, g = −0.717 (95% CI −1.259 to −0.175) versus g = −0.023 (95% CI −0.276 to 0.230)...
