Italy's Macroeconomic Problems Cannot Be Remedied By Issuing a Domestic Quasi-Money
The Italian general elections of March 4, 2018 have produced an improbable coalition government between two upstart populist parties: left-Eurosceptic-nationalist Movimento 5 Stelle (Five Star Movement) and the right-Eurosceptic-nationalist Lega (League). The coalition partners agree on greater public spending and, at the same time, on tax cuts that would reduce revenue. How then to pay for the additional spending? Italy is already highly indebted. Its publicdebt stands at 133 percent of GDP, highest in the Eurozone apart from Greece, and well above the EU ’s average of 87 percent. Its sovereign bonds carry a high defaul...

FDA Commissioner Gottlieb ’s Sunday “Tweetorial” Is Both Encouraging and Frustrating
A fair reading of Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Scott Gottlieb ’s “Sunday Tweetorial” on the opioid overdose crisis leaves one simultaneously encouraged and frustrated. First the encouraging news. The Commissioner admits that the so-called epidemic of opioid overdoses has “evolved” from one “mostly involving [diverted] prescription drugs to one that’s increasingly fueled by illicit substances being purchased online or off the street.” Most encouraging was this passage:  Even as lawful prescribing of opioids is declining, we ’re seeing large increases in deaths from accidental drug overdoses...

HydrUStent ’s Biodegradable Stents Could Improve Patient Outcomes
Stents are widely used in patient care, but a major complication is infection and, for many types of stents, the need for eventual surgical removal. HydrUStent, a startup based at the University of Minho in Portugal, hopes to improve those limitations. HydrUStent’s product is a ureteral stent made from a patented material that is antibacterial, homogeneous, and biodegradable. It degrades by dissolution of the material in urine, which prevents the need for a second surgery for stent removal. “The dissolution profile is controlled and [depends] on the formulation used for stent production,” says CEO Alexandre Barros. B...

Ending Aging Now Translated into Portuguese
Ending Aging is an important book, a concise explanation of the SENS approach to the development of rejuvenation therapies. It is aimed at laypeople, but with enough depth for scientists to use it as a starting point for their own further reading as well. It covers the extensive evidence gathered by the research community over the decades to support the concept that aging is caused by the accumulation of a few classes of molecular damage to cells and tissues. It outlines proposed therapies that could, if fully developed, repair or work around that damage in order to remove its contribution to aging. Since its public...
