Streaming users
Digital goods – whether software, music and video files, images, documents – can all be transferred at almost zero cost between users provided they have the appropriate computer system and network connection. Unfortunately, for several industries that relied on copyright control for their profits. The ease with which digital goods can be shared means that once a copy has been unshackled from any copy protection (if one were available) it can be shared very quickly to as many users as wish to have the digital goods. In the nineteenth century, the sheet music industry suffered a downturn in profits, as copying of...

101 Good Morning Quotes to Help You to Start Your Day Right
Today I’d like to share 101 timeless quotes that will help you to have a good and motivated morning. Because how you start your day tends to set the tone for the rest of the day. If you start your day with negativity and in a hurried and stressed state then that'll likely continue for the rest of the day and impact your work, relationships and overall quality of life that day. If you on the other hand start your day in a positive way with some uplifting reading or a fun conversation around the breakfast table and then get started with your most important task of your day as soon as you arrive at work then you’re setti...

The Coming " Stimulant Crisis? "
Earlier this month the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in the  Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR), reported that from 2015-2016 deaths from cocaine and psychostimulants (such as methamphetamine, Ritalin, dextroamphetamine) increased 52.4 percent and 33.3 percent respectively. The Secret Safe Injection Facility That Is Saving American Lives
I have written  here,  here,  and here about efforts by a nonprofit in Philadelphia named “Safehouse” to establish a Safe Injection Facility in the neighborhood of Kensington, where IV drug use is rampant and out in the open, and overdoses are soaring. That effort is being impeded by threats from the Department of Justice that it w ill enforce federal law prohibiting such sites. The specific law at issue is known as the “Crack House Statute, ” passed in the 1980s. Leaders in other major US cities who also want to set up Safe Injection Facilities, including Seattle,  San Francisco,  New York, and  Boston, a...

Does Time Really Fly When You ’ re Having Fun?
If you’re a parent, chances are you might recall a long road trip with your family when you’ve been on the road maybe all of ten minutes, and you hear that dreaded question from the back seat: “Are we there yet?” Time passes slowly for children, especially when they’re anticipating something (as in their vacation destination), or when they’re bored. So you suggest that your child read a book or watch a video. Or you play travel games with them. You know, to make the time go by faster. We know these activities don’t really speed up time, which is constant. But they sure can change our perception of how much ti...

Elizabeth Warren's Economic Nationalism
Economic nationalism and pandering to farmers  are two classic parts of presidential campaigning. In this post by Senator Elizabeth Warren, she does both at the same time:Advancing the Interests of American FarmersWashington has also bowed to powerful foreign interests instead of standing up for American farmers. Congress  repealed mandatory country-of-origin labeling for beef and pork in 2015 after a series of World Trade Organization challenges from Canada and Mexico, and it hasn’t established a new rule to protect American farmers. The result is that beef and pork can be given a US origin label if it is proce...

Libertarians and Harm Reduction
Last week we held a day-long  conference at the Cato Institute devoted to exploring the strategy known as “harm reduction” to address the rising rate of drug overdose deaths and the spread of infectious diseases, such as hepatitis and HIV.  In my remarks at the beginning and at the conclusion of the conference, I pointed out that the harms afflicting the drug-using community and their intimate contacts are the direct result of drug prohibition. Cato ’s Jeffrey Miron emphasized that point in a key presentation and discussed the success Portugal has had in reducing overdose deaths, HIV, hepatitis, and the heroin add...

3m Littmann Stethoscope Now with ECG, PCG Superpowers
Modern technologies allow clinicians to assess the heart in all sorts of ways (electrocardiography (ECG), ultrasound, phonocardiography (PCG)), and just about anywhere. Yet, this reality is nowhere near ubiquitous because of high costs, interoperability issues, legacy tools, and frequent dependence on performing exams in a clinical setting by trained professionals. A team of clinicians and engineers at the IT – Instituto de Telecomunicações and Polytechnic Institute of Setúbal in Portugal have now modified an off-the-shelf electronic stethoscope to also perform ECG and PCG recording and auto analysis. The 3M Lit...

Super Bowl Stuttering Slight Should Not Go Unnoticed
Super Bowl LIII opened with four and a half minutes of Peyton Manning plugging his creative genius—a scene featuring gladiators—to a room of executives who seem doubtful of his brilliant idea. He proceeds to tell them he’s already rented the Colosseum for the actual shoot. Then John Malkovich, standing in the middle of the Colosseum, enters via video call and begins talking about what a trite concept Manning is proposing. Before Malkovich begins his rant, however, one of the executives exclaims in disbelief that John Malkovich is actually at the Roman Colosseum, Peyton Manning states condescendingly, “Of course ...
