Validation of the 35-mm rule in traumatic pneumothorax in an Asian population
CONCLUSION: Most patients with traumatic PTX of ≤35 mm on CT had undergone successful 4-h observation without thoracostomy. Additionally, PTX of >35 mm was an independent risk factor for observation failure. Considering the lower optimal cutoff value and high failure rates observed in this study, the current guidelines need modifications.PMID:38294228 | DOI:10.1080/00325481.2024.2313449 (Source: Postgraduate Medicine)

Safety of flexible bronchoscopy and clinical course for elderly patients with suspected primary lung cancer
ConclusionsThis study suggests that flexible bronchoscopy can be performed as safely in the elderly as in the nonelderly. Furthermore, even elderly patients may have a greater chance of receiving treatment when a definitive diagnosis is achieved. (Source: Thoracic Cancer)

Risk Factors for Preoperative Pneumothorax in Neonates With Isolated Left-Sided Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia: An International Cohort Study
We aimed to investigate the clinical characteristics and outcomes of patients with isolated left-sided congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) who developed preoperative pneumothorax and determine its risk factors. (Source: Journal of Pediatric Surgery)

Chest drains after open paediatric lung resections: not always required
ConclusionsChest drains may not always be required following open paediatric lung resection. The selective omission of a chest drain following open lung resection, does not appear to result in a significantly higher rate of complications or reintervention, and is associated with significantly shorter hospital length of stay. Pneumothorax Incidence with Normal Saline Instillation for Sealing the Needle Track After Computed Tomography-Guided Percutaneous Lung Biopsy
ConclusionNormal saline solution instillation for sealing the needle track after computed tomography-guided percutaneous lung biopsy is a simple, low-cost and safe technique resulted in significantly decreased pneumothorax occurrence and a numerically lower chest tube placement rate, and might help to reduce both hospitalization risks and costs for the healthcare system.Level of evidence 3 Non-controlled retrospective cohort study.Graphical Abstract (Source: CardioVascular and Interventional Radiology)

A novel method for the bronchial occlusion of prolonged air leakage using customized endobronchial plugs
CONCLUSIONS: Bronchial occlusion using customized endobronchial plugs appears to be an effective and simple option for the management of PAL in patients who are not suitable for surgery, especially in developing countries, as the customized plug is a cost-effective alternative.PMID:38249896 | PMC:PMC10797409 | DOI:10.21037/jtd-23-1053 (Source: Journal of Thoracic Disease)

Adhesion is a risk factor for postoperative recurrence of spontaneous pneumothorax
CONCLUSIONS: The present findings suggest that low BMI and intraoperative adhesion are risk factors for postoperative recurrence of spontaneous pneumothorax. For such patients, additional intraoperative procedures, such as covering with PGA sheet absorbable oxidized cellulose may be required to reduce postoperative recurrence.PMID:38249897 | PMC:PMC10797360 | DOI:10.21037/jtd-23-1127 (Source: Journal of Thoracic Disease)

Retrospective cohort study on the correlation analysis among peri-procedural factors, complications, and local tumor progression of lung tumors treated with CT-guided microwave ablation
CONCLUSIONS: A greater difference between HU before and after the procedure or a decrease in CT values immediately after ablation may predict a higher rate of local complete ablation. Prompt management of intraoperative pneumothorax may lower local tumor progression rates and decrease incidence of post-procedural infection.PMID:38249890 | PMC:PMC10797391 | DOI:10.21037/jtd-23-1799 (Source: Journal of Thoracic Disease)

The efficacy and safety of radial endobronchial ultrasound-guided transbronchial lung cryobiopsy in the diagnosis of lung disease
CONCLUSIONS: R-EBUS-guided TBLC is safe and effective for the diagnosis of lung diseases, including ILDs and other PPLs. R-EBUS can guide cryobiopsy and avoid the potential risk of severe bleeding as well as radiation exposure. The pathological diagnosis rate of ILDs is relatively low, and MDD plays an important role in the diagnosis of ILDs.PMID:38249930 | PMC:PMC10797348 | DOI:10.21037/jtd-23-1005 (Source: Journal of Thoracic Disease)
