Blog: International Women ’s Day is more important than ever
UNISON is the UK’s largest women’s organisation and that’s one of the reasons why equality is at the heart of everything we do. We mobilise our members in support of women’s issues here and across the world, and International Women’s Day, held on 8 March, is one of many opportunities throughout the year to celebrate the achievements of women and girls across the globe in every part of society. The history of women’s struggles for gender equality and equal rights is long and inspiring. Many will feel that it is hard to celebrate right now. We’ve just had two years of a traumatic pandemic that disproportionate...

Outcome of plasma exchange in acute liver failure due to yellow phosphorus poisoning: a single-center experience - Angraje S, Sekar M, Mishra B, Matcha J.
BACKGROUND: Yellow phosphorus (YP) is a protoplasmic poison that causes acute liver failure (ALF) for which liver transplantation is the definitive modality. Hereby, we present our clinical data on the role of plasma exchange (PE) in ALF due to YP poisonin... (Source: SafetyLit)

World ’s vast networks of underground fungi to be mapped for first time
Project aims to help protect some of trillions of miles of the ‘circulatory system of the planet’Vast networks of underground fungi – the “circulatory system of the planet” – are to be mapped for the first time, in an attempt to protect them from damage and improve their ability to absorb and store carbon dioxide.Fungi use carbon to build networks in the soil, which connect to plant roots and act as nutrient “highways”, exchanging carbon from plant roots for nutrients. For instance, some fungi are known to supply 80% of phosphorus to their host plants.Continue reading... (Source: Guardian Unlimited Science)

What is Refeeding Syndrome?
Discussion Anorexia nervosa is an eating disorder with an intense fear of being overweight (i.e. distorted body image), and self-starvation and excessive weight loss. It is more common in women (1.2%) than men (0.2%) but can be seen in both genders. Risk factors include high-intelligence, perfectionism/inflexibility, anxiety, activities where thinner body types are expected (e.g. dancer, diver, gymnast, long-distance runner, volleyball player, etc.) Other eating disorders include bulimia nervosa (i.e. cycles of binge eating and then purging), binge eating disorder (i.e. purging), orthorexia (i.e. obsessions with healthful ...

Ocean microbes team up brilliantly to gather food when it's scarce
(Marine Biological Laboratory) What's a hungry marine microbe to do when the pickings are slim? It must capture nutrients - nitrogen, phosphorus, or iron - to survive, yet in vast expanses of the ocean, nutrients are extremely scarce. One ingenious solution to this challenge is reported this week in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. (Source: EurekAlert! - Biology)

Metagenomic analysis reveals global-scale patterns of ocean nutrient limitation
Nutrient supply regulates the activity of phytoplankton, but the global biogeography of nutrient limitation and co-limitation is poorly understood. Prochlorococcus adapt to local environments by gene gains and losses, and we used genomic changes as an indicator of adaptation to nutrient stress. We collected metagenomes from all major ocean regions as part of the Global Ocean Ship-based Hydrographic Investigations Program (Bio-GO-SHIP) and quantified shifts in genes involved in nitrogen, phosphorus, and iron assimilation. We found regional transitions in stress type and severity as well as widespread co-stress. Prochlorococ...

For highly active, sustainable catalysts, just add phosphorus
(Osaka University) Osaka University researchers have developed a single-crystal cobalt phosphide nanorod catalyst for the reductive amination of carbonyl compounds to primary amines. The nanorod catalyst performed better than conventional catalysts, was stable in air, and was effective under mild conditions. Additionally, it could be reused multiple times without loss of activity. It is hoped that the nanorod catalyst will provide a green and sustainable alternative for the synthesis of valuable products such as pharmaceuticals. (Source: EurekAlert! - Biology)

A van der Waals interface that creates in-plane polarization and a spontaneous photovoltaic effect
Van der Waals interfaces can be formed by layer stacking without regard to lattice constants or symmetries of individual building blocks. We engineered the symmetry of a van der Waals interface of tungsten selenide and black phosphorus and realized in-plane electronic polarization that led to the emergence of a spontaneous photovoltaic effect. Spontaneous photocurrent was observed along the polar direction and was absent in the direction perpendicular to it. The observed spontaneous photocurrent was explained by a quantum-mechanical shift current that reflects the geometrical and topological electronic nature of this emerg...
