A cross-sectional study on restless legs syndrome (RLS) in polycythemia vera (PV): is iron deficiency the only culprit?
CONCLUSION: RLS was more common among PV and ET patients than HSs, which was irrespective to the iron status. RLS was more frequent in ET patients than that observed in PV cases, indicating that ID may not be the only causative factor for RLS development in PV. Further prospective studies are needed to determine the prevalence and risk factors of RLS developing in PV and ET.PMID:37736879 | DOI:10.1080/01616412.2023.2257443 (Source: Neurological Research)

The role of multidisciplinary team and stepwise pelvic devascularization to minimize blood loss during total pelvic exenteration for patients refusing blood transfusion
We describe the case of a female Jehovah's Witness patient in her 60s undergoing pelvic exenteration, focusing on the preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative measures that allowed an uncomplicated surgery without blood transfusion. Blood transfusions are common in the surgical management of gynecology oncology patients, up to 93% of patients undergoing pelvic exenteration may require blood products. However, increasingly more patients are cautious in receiving blood products, either for fear of potential risks or for religious believes. It is therefore vital to optimize the management of these patients in order to ...

The Historical Course of Varicose Vein Surgery in the Persian Medicine
Conclusion: The surgical treatment of varicose veins in the past was similar to modern surgical therapies. What distinguishes yesterday's varicose vein surgery from today's surgery is a more advanced tool. There is no denying the remarkable progress in using health principles, treatment techniques, and surgical instruments to facilitate surgery and reduce the disease's complications and recurrence. However, the treatment framework and foundation, such as phlebectomy and compression, were all invented and introduced in the distant past.PMID:37671628 (Source: Acta Chirurgica Belgica)

The CELTIC ranges project (Comprehensive and Effective Laboratory Test Reference Intervals for Irish Children) methodology and results for renal profile tests in plasma on the Roche ModularTM system
CONCLUSIONS: Our renal profile findings are broadly consistent with those of international studies e.g. CALIPER, HAPPI, NORDIC, Prince and KiGGs. Moreover, the CELTIC Ranges study is also based on over 1000 subjects whose samples were analysed on the widely used Roche Modular analytics system. We also expect the findings will improve knowledge of children's metabolic health in Ireland.PMID:37669625 | DOI:10.1177/00045632231202330 (Source: Clinical Biochemistry)

Maintaining glucose integrity ex-vivo: Impact of pre-analytical specimen handling
Conclusion Glucose in FC-Mix BCT stored @4°C demonstrated the best agreement with results determined using the WHO specifications. When FC-Mix tubes were stored @RT glucose was stable for 4 days. These findings suggest that the FC-Mix BCT effectively inhibits glycolysis and should be introduced into routine clinical practice.PMID:37626439 | DOI:10.1177/00045632231199374 (Source: Clinical Biochemistry)
