Best Clinical Hours?
Hi all, I may be getting a part-time weekend Phlebotomist role in a hospital. I see mixed takes online about this, on both SDN and Reddit, about how this paid clinical PCE is viewed. Some say it's ranked lower as far as clinical hours go than something like ED Tech, CNA / PCT, or MA would be. Or say they don't view it favorably for clinical. Technically, given I'd be in a hospital, everyone I'd work with would officially be a patient. Half my time would be specimen collection, blood draws... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Secondary Polycythemia
New attending here. Hoping to get some advice from those of you practicing for a while. I just started a job in a somewhat rural setting. I get a lot of Heme referrals from PCPs, pulmonologists, etc for patients for polycythemia. These are almost always known tobacco abuse cases, COPD, etc. We were always taught in training to treat the underlying cause, but the referring docs and patients expect to be treated with therapeutic phlebotomy. Some of them have had this issue for years and... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

What counts as clinical experience?
Hi, would volunteering as a visual interpreter for individuals with visual impairments count as some sort of clinical experience or community volunteering? It provides direct care as I interact with the users and help them with anything they may need in their day to day, although it is virtual, it provides direct engagement. Also, does anyone know what the best way to get trained as a phlebotomist or medical assistant is? I want to do it over the summer, but I can't seem to find any courses. When to post Update Letters?
I applied to Texas medical schools (I'm OOS w/ strong ties) end of May and submitted secondaries by mid-June. My application was marked complete mid-July. I had Stats in progress when applying, but I have since completed the course receiving an A. I also got an A in Genetics (also IP at the time of application) and will be a certified Phlebotomist by spring 2024. For schools that allow updates, is it worth sending an update letter? Thanks, Loraine (Source: Student Doctor Network)
