Maintaining glucose integrity ex-vivo: Impact of pre-analytical specimen handling
Conclusion Glucose in FC-Mix BCT stored @4°C demonstrated the best agreement with results determined using the WHO specifications. When FC-Mix tubes were stored @RT glucose was stable for 4 days. These findings suggest that the FC-Mix BCT effectively inhibits glycolysis and should be introduced into routine clinical practice.PMID:37626439 | DOI:10.1177/00045632231199374 (Source: Clinical Biochemistry)

Distribution of videos demonstrating best practices in preventing hemolysis is associated with reduced hemolysis among nurse-collected specimens in hospitals
CONCLUSIONS: We developed a novel and convenient educational aid that, when distributed, was associated with beneficial changes in specimen hemolysis at hospital inpatient units and outpatient clinics. Including it in ongoing nursing education will fill a knowledge gap that may help to reduce specimen hemolysis.PMID:37579938 | DOI:10.1016/j.clinbiochem.2023.110632 (Source: Clinical Biochemistry)

Current therapies for classic myeloproliferative neoplasms: A focus on pathophysiology and supportive care
CONCLUSION: Treatment options for MPNs span a wide range of disease mechanisms. The growth of targeted therapies holds promise for expanding the treatment arsenal for these rare, yet complex diseases and creates opportunities to optimize supportive care for affected patients.PMID:37556726 | DOI:10.1093/ajhp/zxad181 (Source: American Journal of Health-System Pharmacy : AJHP)

Reducing unnecessary diagnostic phlebotomy in intensive care: a prospective quality improvement intervention
Conclusion Iterative improvement interventions targeting clinician test ordering behaviour can reduce ICU phlebotomy and may impact red cell transfusions. Frequent stakeholder consultation, incorporating stewardship into daily workflow, and audit and feedback are effective strategies. (Source: Quality and Safety in Health Care)

Comparison of capillary blood self-collection using the Tasso-SST device with venous phlebotomy for anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibody measurement
J Immunol Methods. 2023 Jul 7:113523. doi: 10.1016/j.jim.2023.113523. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTMeasuring seroprevalence over time is a valuable epidemiological tool for improving our understanding of COVID-19 immunity. Due to the large number of collections required for population surveillance as well as concerns about potential infection risk to the collectors, self-collection approaches are being increasingly pursued. To advance this methodology, we collected paired venous and capillary blood samples by routine phlebotomy and Tasso-SST device respectively from 26 participants and measured total immunoglobulin (Ig) a...
