On again, off again; on again, off again
A reader who calls herself “Geisha” left this interesting comment on the Wheat Belliers Share Their Wheat Re-Exposure Experiences blog post: It’s been enlightening reading this blog again–after 6 months absence. I started wheat free early 2012, lost lots of weight, felt great, flat tum, food cravings under control. Unwittingly, I started eating wheat on holidays in Japan at Christmas. Big bowel problems followed that re-exposure. Incredible how much energy I’ve lost this year, put on 8 kgs [17.6 pounds] in recent months, big bloated belly, up two pant sizes, sinus infections (never had sinus probs i...

The Healthful Vegan Diet
‘Let your food be your medicine, and your medicine be your food.’ ~Hippocrates By Leo Babauta Eat plants. Those two words are the best things I’ve learned about diet, and if you stick to that, you’re likely be pretty healthy. That said, eating a vegan diet (no animal products) doesn’t necessarily equate to a healthy diet, despite what many believe. Yes, vegans on average are healthier and leaner than the average person. But that’s an average — there are unhealthy vegans. How is that possible? You can eat lots of sweets, fried foods, processed foods, foods with white flour (br...

Chopped Salad for Better Nutrition
My Aunt Bridie and Uncle Frank from Galway, Ireland introduced me to the chopped salad this spring. I’ve always loved salad and never thought that a salad could be so delicious and magical, so boy was I surprised when I ate their chopped salad. Here’s the most exciting part: a chopped salad delivers far more nutrition than a regular salad. The reason is by chopping it you make more of the nutrients available for your body to absorb. When we chew salad we do a woeful job of actually tearing it apart enough to glean all the nutritional benefits. The other reason why this chopped salad is more nutritious is becaus...

What to eat
I am confused. In an age where the latest trend is to eat healthier food, buy local, and all that, I really do try.My first motivator is the Mediterranean diet because it is supposed to be healthy and because I like the food. This means eating plant based food like grains, fruits and vegetables, less butter and more olive oil, less red meat and more fish and poultry. I can do this. Except my husband likes steak so when we eat red meat, I have gotten us smaller portions. This works pretty well for us.Then there is the fibromyalgia diet which is lots of plant based food and lean protein which sounds pretty similar so that sh...

Pregnancy and Sensory Challenges
Pregnancy comes with many challenges... here are some weird sensory ones that I've noticed.SmellsFor many people, this is the telltale sensory experience in pregnancy. I am super sensitive to smells normally, so I figured that I'd be losing my cookies every whipstitch when I got pregnant. Fortunately I have not had that problem! But there have definitely been times when I walked away from an area that smelled like fish, or eggs, or peppers (after the kitchen fiasco in our home referred to as "the great pepper incident"). The smells that have really gotten to me are (oddly) related to clothing. Being underemployed at the po...

Divergent Paths to Take
It is bedtime here.  Maggie is out on the back deck in the cool night air.  She will come on in when things quiet down some, namely me quieting down, and the neighborhood dogs quiet down some as well. They are all communicating in this revelry and Maggie is joining in. It is like the greater good dog neighbor association. I will probably have one more cola, watch a video review on a gaming laptop that is supposed to be thinner than a dime, and go to bed. I have fresh Gain infused freshly washed sheets to greet me tonight.   Or We could get out the Dobsonian telescope and try to find the Andromeda gala...

Acupuncture is a theatrical placebo: the end of a myth
Conclusions It is clear from meta-analyses that results of acupuncture trials are variable and inconsistent, even for single conditions.  After thousands of trials of acupuncture, and hundreds of systematic reviews (Ernst et al., 2011), arguments continue unabated.  In 2011, Pain carried an editorial which summed up the present situation well. “Is there really any need for more studies? Ernst et al. (2011) point out that the positive studies conclude that acupuncture relieves pain in some conditions but not in other very similar conditions. What would you think if a new pain pill was shown to reliev...

Cupcakes and Gardens and Racing, Oh My!
By Jan Chait It’s all my fault. I knew this week was coming and I should have prepared for it by writing this week’s blog entry ahead. Well, I have a huge secret: I “grew up” in a newsroom for a daily newspaper and everything I ever wrote was on deadline. There was no time to do much of anything ahead. So that’s what I’m used to and you’re going to get a bit of a potpourri of topics. What’s this week? My granddaughter’s graduation from high school. There’s already been one party, which took place in a park near our house on Sunday. She and a friend planned it and ...

Bear Spray
P { margin-bottom: 0.08in; } Where I'm living black bears are quite commonly seen around town. While I have yet to hear of a really bad bear encounter many bears are destroyed every year for getting too familiar with town. Most people here merely avoid them when they see them. Alternatively, aggressive responses to threatening bear encounters include firearms and pepper spray. While obtaining a firearm requires getting a firearms license and many restrictions, getting bear spray is as simple as purchasing some from Canadian Tire. So what is bear pepper spray and does it work? The active ingredient in bear pepper ...

Preparing the Kitchen and Vegetable Gardens
This post brought to you by Scotts Miracle-Gro. All opinions are 100% mine. I have longed for the arrival of spring and summer, missing all the delicious garden and local-grown vegetables and herbs that we enjoyed so much last summer.  We live in a rural area where many are concerned about preserving our natural resources.  The concept of sustainable gardening is an important one, in fact there is a community garden that many contribute time to in our Town, reaping the benefits of the vegetables, and sharing the overflow with food pantries in Town. But for this post, I am concentrating on preparations for my own ...
