Have some pizza!
I made a full-sized family pizza starting with the Wheat Free Market Wheat Belly Pizza Crust Mix. The people at Wheat Free Market made the mix according to my recipe for pizza crust. Despite being wheat-free and not using any of the junk carbohydrate ingredients typically used in gluten-free doughs (NO cornstarch, tapioca starch, potato starch, or rice flour), the recipe is designed to yield pizza dough sturdy enough to hold in your hands. And be tasty, of course! I made a single large family-sized pizza from one package, but one package can also yield two smaller pizzas. I followed package directions and added 2 eggs, 4 t...

Wheat Belly Holiday Recipes 1
At the start of their Wheat Belly journey, many people resign themselves to a life without gravy, biscuits, or pumpkin pie, having to make the best of holidays devoid of enjoyment and indulgence. Just eat your dry turkey meat and lettuce leaves! It’s not true. You can indeed have all your holiday dishes. But we are going to recreate them without wheat, without other grains, without use of gluten-free junk carbohydrates (no cornstarch, tapioca starch, potato starch, or rice flour), with little to no added sugars, and no other problem ingredients. Minus all the undesirable ingredients, in fact, pumpkin pie, biscuits, a...

Unity Farm Journal - The 5th Week of May 2014
The Memorial Day weekend included shearing day on the farm.   Every year in May, we trim 15 pounds of fiber from each alpaca, removing a body size “down jacket” just in time for Summer.  The animals are transformed from teddy bears to Dr. Seuss animals.  We gently halter the animals and reassure them with ear and chin massages.   Then we lead them to a foam pad and use a soft rope to restrain their legs so that they cannot move while the sharp clippers are shaving their fiber.   We also use the opportunity to trim their teeth and nails.   In two hours, the work was done and the newly shear...

Classic Pizza
Yes, you can have pizza in a wheat- and grain-free lifestyle! In previous versions of pizza recipes, we encountered difficulty in creating crusts sturdy enough to be held by hand. While we take every possible chance to bash grains, one thing they do have is gluten that confers the unique stretchy property of dough. We lost that quality when we reject all things wheat and grains. So here we recreate sturdiness with a mixture of meals/flours with shredded cheese melted into the mixture. As you will learn, this creates a crust every bit as good but with none of the adverse health implications. Classic Pizza   Print ...

Secret Menus and Special Requests: Staying Healthy When Dining Out
By Crabby McSlackerSo it turns out many chain restaurants have "secret" or "hidden" menus--there's even  a blog called hack the menu devoted to describing items you can order that are not listed on the regular menu. The problem? Almost all of these secret items are even more evil and poisonous than the usual craptastic chain offerings. They may make you feel more like a hip insider as you use the special secret passwords and score an exclusive treat--but the items themselves don't deserve any coverage on a healthy living blog. Even one as half-assed as Cranky Fitness. There is one notable exception, however: P...

Those amazing little kidneys
Years ago I was a dialysis nurse and I could not believe what I learned about these little organs in your body and how they actually work.  First let’s note that these are bean-shaped and about the size of a fist.  The kidneys are located near the middle of the back, on each side of the spine.  Kidneys, if healthy, are working 24 hours a day, 7 days a week; they are like a built-in water treatment plant!  Their main job is to filter the blood – to maintain a balance of water and chemicals.  Every day these amazing little organs filter out about 2 quarts of wastes and fluid in the form of urine.   Unfortunatel...

It’s National Nutrition Month and all month long we’re sharing fun and delicious ways to “enjoy the taste of eating right.” To me, it’s all about making practical food choices, and about blending taste and nutrition. I was on Let’s Talk Live this week sharing some of my favorite tips for snacks and breakfasts that are full of flavor and packed with nutrition. Hopefully it can help make eating right a little easier (and a little tastier!) for you and your family. ...
