Accurate diagnosis of bullous pemphigoid requires multiple health care visits
DiscussionOne diagnostic code of L12.0 is not enough to recognize BP in a large epidemiological data set; including only L12.0 registered in dermatology units and excluding cases with <3 L12.0 record entries markedly increases the PPV of BP diagnosis. (Source: Frontiers in Immunology)

Cutaneous Lupus Erythematosus: Review and Considerations for Older Populations
AbstractThough more common earlier in life, increasing attention is being focused on the development of cutaneous lupus erythematosus (CLE) in patients with advancing age. Studies show that CLE is more common in older populations than previously thought, and all CLE subtypes are possible in this group. Just like patients in the third or fourth decade of life, CLE may appear alongside or independent of systemic lupus erythematosus. Older populations manifesting CLE for the first time seem to have a lower risk of progression to systemic disease than younger peers, and are more commonly White. CLE must be carefully distinguis...

Laminin β4 is a constituent of the cutaneous basement membrane zone and additional autoantigen of anti-p200 pemphigoid
Anti-p200 pemphigoid is a subepidermal autoimmune blistering disease (AIBD) characterized by autoantibodies against a 200 kDa protein. Laminin γ1 has been described as target antigen in 70-90% of patients. No diagnostic assay is widely available for anti-p200 pemphigoid, which might be due to the unclear pathogenic relevance of anti-laminin γ1 autoantibodies. Violaceous Nodules on the Right Lower Leg
An patient with a history of bullous pemphigoid treated with oral prednisolone presented with multiple round, dark brown to violaceous-colored firm nodules on the right leg and 2 nodular masses with hemorrhagic crusts on the right foot. Complete blood cell count and creatinine and liver function test results were normal, and results of HIV antibody testing were negative. What is the diagnosis and what would you do next? The gut microbiome in bullous pemphigoid: implications of the gut-skin axis for disease susceptibility
Bullous pemphigoid (BP) is an autoimmune blistering disease that primarily affects the elderly. An altered skin microbiota in BP was recently revealed. Accumulating evidence points toward a link between the gut microbiota and skin diseases; however, the gut microbiota composition of BP patients remains largely underexplored, with only one pilot study to date, with a very limited sample size and no functional profiling of gut microbiota. To thoroughly investigate the composition and function of the gut microbiota in BP patients, and explore possible links between skin conditions and gut microbiota, we here investigated the ...
