Approach for contact medical device development via integrated testing, skeletal muscle modeling, and finite element analysis
J Mech Behav Biomed Mater. 2024 Apr 16;155:106541. doi: 10.1016/j.jmbbm.2024.106541. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTDevelopment of novel medical devices for the treatment of musculoskeletal pain associated with neuro-muscular trigger points requires a model for relating the mechanical responses of in vivo biological tissues to applied palliative physical pressures and a method to design treatments for optimal effects. It is reasonable to hypothesize that the efficacy of therapeutic treatment is proportional to the maximum tensile strain at trigger point locations. This work presents modeling of the mechanical behavior of bi...

Evaluation of Stages, Treatment Protocols, and Outcomes of Colorectal Cancer among West Bank Patients
Conclusions: A high percentage of patients were diagnosed in advanced CRC stages. The treatment modes were adopted from general international guidelines; however, the cure rates were low, and mortality was high. More studies need to be undertaken to investigate the actual application of chemotherapy protocols, and survival would benefit from the involvement of clinical pharmacists in the chemotherapy protocol selection, dosing, frequency, and follow-up. The present study advocates for greater public awareness of CRC and attests to the merits of screening by primary care professionals, which can help to avoid this serious i...

Retrospective Evaluation of the Efficacy of Total Neoadjuvant Therapy and Chemoradiotherapy Neoadjuvant Treatment in Relation to Surgery in Patients with Rectal Cancer
Conclusions: By using TNT, a higher rate of stage reduction is obtained compared to the neoadjuvant CRT treatment. The post-neoadjuvant-treatment imagistic evaluation fails to accurately evaluate the response. A better response to TNT was observed in young patients.PMID:38674302 | PMC:PMC11052151 | DOI:10.3390/medicina60040656 (Source: Medicina (Kaunas))

Factors Predicting Readmission and Mortality in Patients Admitted for Malignant Bowel Obstruction
CONCLUSION: Patient age, primary language, and PC consult were predictors for MBO readmission, which may impact 90-day mortality. Given the palliative nature of MBO, modifiable factors such as PC consultation and multidisciplinary goals of care discussions should be prioritized in order to reduce readmissions and focus on quality of life (QOL) for this patient population.PMID:38676624 | DOI:10.1177/00031348241250045 (Source: The American Surgeon)

Attitudes and beliefs regarding Pain Medicine: results of a national palliative physician survey
CONCLUSION: This study shows that Palliative Care physicians have highly positive attitudes toward Pain Medicine specialists, but referrals remain low. Facilitating professional collaboration via joint educational/clinical sessions is one possible solution to drive ongoing interprofessional care in patients with complex pain.PMID:38677489 | DOI:10.1016/j.jpainsymman.2024.04.015 (Source: Pain Physician)

Bi-Ventricular repair of critically ill Neonates with Ebstein's Anomaly – Keeping it Simple
Surgical management of critically ill neonates with Ebstein Anomaly (EA) remains challenging with most published hospital and 1-year mortalities approximating 30-40% irrespective of the surgical or palliative strategy. We have adopted an initial bi-ventricular repair strategy for most symptomatic neonates and young infants since 1994 and sought to identify whether our simplified tricuspid valve repair will be associated with improved outcome by a wider audience of experienced surgeons. The essential principles of the repair include (i) monocusp tricuspid valve repair based on the anterior leaflet, (ii) fenestrated ASD clos...
