Hannah Devlin looks at recent advances in the field ofcryopreservation and asks how close we are to applying these technologies to whole organsSubscribe& Review oniTunes,Soundcloud,Audioboom,Mixcloud&Acast, and join the discussion onFacebook andTwitterLast year, around 3,500 organs were transplanted into patients in the UK alone. That said, a large number of organs were also discarded because the moment a donor dies, doctors have only eight or so hours to find a patient on the organ register who is a match and can be almost immediately ready for surgery. Here ’s how you heat up cold hearts—for transplantation
[Photo courtesy University of Minnesota]A University of Minnesota–led research team has successfully warmed large-scale animal heart valves and blood vessels that were previously preserved at low temperatures. The discovery of this rewarming process is pivotal for organs and tissues that are left in storage for transplantation for extended periods. “This is the first time that anyone has been able to scale up to a larger biological system and demonstrate successful, fast, and uniform warming hundreds of degrees Celsius per minute of preserved tissue without damaging the tissue,” said John Bischof, a University of Min...

Emory performs first HIV-positive kidney transplant from HIV-positive deceased donor
Emory Transplant Center performed its first HIV-positive kidney transplant from an HIV-positive deceased donor. The transplant was the first of its kind in Georgia. It was possible because of the HIV Organ Policy Equity (HOPE) Act, which took effect in 2015 and authorizes clinical research and revision of rules about organ donation and transportation as a result of that research. Previously, the use of HIV- positive organs was a federal crime. Emory University and eight other centers are conducting… (Source: bizjournals.com Health Care News Headlines)

Time trends in organ donation after neurologic determination of death: a cohort study - Kramer AH, Baht R, Doig CJ.
BACKGROUND: The cause of brain injury may influence the number of organs that can be procured and transplanted with donation following neurologic determination of death. We investigated whether the distribution of causes responsible for neurologic death ha... (Source: SafetyLit)

First human-pig 'chimera' created in milestone study
Prospect of growing human organs for transplantation raised by creation of first ever embryos combining two large, distantly related speciesScientists have created a human-pig hybrid in a milestone study that raises the prospect of being able to grow human organs inside animals for use in transplants. It marks the first time that embryos combining two large, distantly-related species have been produced. The creation of this so-called chimera – named after the cross-species beast of Greek mythology – has been hailed as a significant first step towards generating human hearts, livers and kidneys from scratch.Continue read...
