A focused review on laser- and energy-assisted drug delivery for nail disorders
AbstractThe purpose of this review is to consolidate and summarize laser-assisted drug delivery (LADD) for nail diseases, particularly onychomycosis and psoriasis. A PubMed search was conducted in June 2023 using search terms (1) “laser assisted drug delivery” AND “nail,” (2) “laser” AND “nail,” and (3) “nail disorder” AND “laser treatment.” References of papers were also reviewed, yielding 15 papers for this review. Fractional ablative CO2 laser (FACL) and Er:YAG laser can be used for LADD of topical medications such as amorolfine, terbinafine, and tioconazole to treat onychomycosis. A fungal cultu...

Onychomycosis in Africa: Prevalence and Spectrum of Fungal Pathogens
AbstractPurpose of ReviewOnychomycosis is commonly reported in Africa, but data on its prevalence and spectrum of incriminated pathogens is fragmented in the literature. Understanding its epidemiology and profiling of the incriminated fungal pathogens would be very useful in managing patients as they are often difficult to treat, especially with the global emergence of antifungal resistance.Recent FindingsWe identified a total of 44 well-documented studies in 13 (24.1%) of the 54 African countries amounting to a total of 6773 cases of nail fungal infections: 4609 (68.0%) from North Africa, 1338 (19.6%) from West Africa, 52...

Effectiveness and safety of oral terbinafine for dermatophyte distal subungual onychomycosis
Expert Opin Pharmacother. 2024 Jan-Apr;25(1):15-23. doi: 10.1080/14656566.2024.2305304. Epub 2024 Feb 1.ABSTRACTINTRODUCTION: Terbinafine has been a cornerstone in dermatophyte infection treatment. Despite its global efficacy, the emergence of terbinafine resistance raises concerns, requiring ongoing vigilance.AREAS COVERED: This paper focuses on evaluating the efficacy and safety of terbinafine in treating dermatophyte toenail infections. Continuous and pulse therapies, with a 24-week continuous regimen and a higher dosage of 500 mg/day have demonstrated superior efficacy to the FDA approved regimen of 250 mg/day x 12 wee...

Development of microemulgel formulations with varied permeation enhancers for transungual delivery of luliconazole in onychomycosis management
Colloids Surf B Biointerfaces. 2023 Dec 20;234:113718. doi: 10.1016/j.colsurfb.2023.113718. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTLuliconazole-loaded microemulgels containing different permeation enhancers were formulated for transungual drug delivery for the management of onychomycosis, onychomycosis, which affects nails. The physicochemical properties like droplet size, zeta potential, pH, viscosity, spreadability, extrudability, oil binding capacity, drug content, and microscopic study were evaluated. The Pseudo-ternary phase diagram was constructed for the formulation of microemulsions (MEs) by keeping the Km ratio constant at...

Species distribution and antifungal susceptibility profiles of yeasts isolated from onychomycosis: a cross-sectional study with insights into emerging species
Antonie Van Leeuwenhoek. 2023 Dec 28;117(1):6. doi: 10.1007/s10482-023-01914-0.ABSTRACTCandida onychomycosis is a common fungal infection affecting the nails, primarily caused by Candida (C.) species. Regarding the increasing trend of Candida onychomycosis and the antifungal resistant phenomenon in recent years, this study aims to evaluate the epidemiological characteristics of Candida onychomycosis, the distribution of emerging species, and the antifungal susceptibility profiles of isolates. Onychomycosis caused by yeast species was confirmed through direct examination and culture of nail scraping among all individuals su...
