Food trends through the years: A mixed bag for heart health?
Remember when packaged foods emblazoned with the words “fat free” seemed to be everywhere? Then came labels boasting “zero grams of trans fat.” “Sugar free” and “low sodium” claims soon joined the chorus. These days, gluten-free foods are all the rage. For the most part, food industry trends have echoed the nutritional mantras of the time and were designed to improve our health — especially cardiovascular health. But just how successful have these efforts been? “It’s a mixed picture, but over all, I think we’re going in a good direction,” says Dr. Walter Willett, professor in nutrition and epidemi...

Unreformed: Taming the Charge Monster
By, SAURABH JHA Any backpacker travelling on a shoestring budget in Thailand knows not to blow their entire budget on premium whiskey in a premium hotel on the first night in Bangkok. Rather, you need to skip the occasional meal, stay in a cheap dorm with random strangers, and drink cheap beer on Khao San Road if you wish to see the country and return home without having to wash dishes in a restaurant in Bangkok to repay the loans. Both Democrats and Republicans seem impervious to a simple wisdom that I learnt when backpacking – you save money if you go for cheap stuff. The operative word here is “cheap.” Both the Af...

Scott Gottlieb And The Goldilocks Theory Of Bringing Change To The FDA
With the nomination of Dr. Scott Gottlieb to head the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) headed to the Senate floor, we can expect another Goldilocks debate. Like the heroine of the classic tale who famously tested the three bowls of porridge to find one too hot, one too cold, and one “just right,” participants will debate whether today’s FDA is too lenient, too tough, or just right in reviewing new prescription drugs. That Dr. Gottlieb is qualified for the role he has been nominated for appears beyond question. What critics take issue with is whether his extensive experience ties him too closely to the entities...

Getting Back On Track
This morning I actually feel rested. Actually I felt pretty rested yesterday morning as well. But my day got hijacked and I ended up spending several hours with my father taking him to a doctor appointment (broken second metatarsal in his left foot at age 88) and then x-rays, back to the doctor, and then home. And then home to our house. I was totally exhausted by the time I got home at 430.But then I slept for close to 9 hours without waking up. So this morning I will go to the gym, then get my hair cut, and go to the library. Then I will stay home and finish what I never got to yesterday. I need to get back on track.What...

When a Celebrity ’s Father Was Found Begging on the Street: 4 Lessons I Learned
A while back, there was a viral news story here in Indonesia: the father of a famous celebrity was found begging on the street. When the government’s social agency picked him up, he was in terrible condition. He didn’t have any belongings. He didn’t even have a single penny.  And he apparently hadn’t taken a shower for days. This became viral because his daughter is a famous celebrity with lots and lots of money. How could this happen? As it turns out, the celebrity’s father and mother divorced years ago when she was just 7 years old. Since then, the father worked odd jobs until one day he could no longer find a...

No toothless cavemen here
Here is an excerpt from chapter 1 of the Wheat Belly Total Health book, a discussion of the striking deterioration in health that developed in humans when we first made the dietary error of consuming grains, not recognizing a dietary expedient as a bad choice that resulted in long-term risk for chronic disease. What happened to those first humans, hungry and desperate, who figured out how to make this one component of grasses—the seed—edible? Incredibly, anthropologists have known this for years. The first humans to consume the grassy food of the ibex and aurochs experienced explosive tooth decay, shrinkage of the maxi...

No, you don't need to read the whole thing . . .
. . . but here are the new official U.S. government dietary guidelines for Americans. No, the Nanny State isn't actually forcing you to eat broccoli. (But try it, you'll like it!) They're just giving you information that you can take or leave. There is one really important nugget in here. It really is very close to a magic bullet. That is the recommendation to limit added sugar to less than 10% of calories per day. This is the first time they've had the nerve to stand up to Big Soda and name a number.Actually the number is still too high. The American Heart Association thinks it should be 5%. Anyway, just to be clear, one (...

The Grain Deficiency Syndrome
Beware the dreaded Grain Deficiency Syndrome. This is what will happen to you if you eliminate wheat, corn, and other grains, the foods that the USDA and U.S. Dept of Health and Human services tell us, through their Dietary Guidelines for Americans, to eat more of, every day, every meal and snack. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, the American Heart Association, and the American Diabetes Association also all agree: Terrible things will happen to you if you eliminate grains. You will develop Grain Deficiency! So what does the Grain Deficiency Syndrome look like? Like any other syndrome, you can recognize this conditio...

What ’s the best way to get rid of bed head? Episode 122
Does this bed head product really work? Sasha asks…Can Ma Cherie Perfect Shower fix your bed better than regular water? Is this worth the money or is it nothing more than water mixed with leave in conditioner? Let’s begin by talking about what causes bed head. First, you have to realize that there are two different kinds of bonds that control the shape of your hair. There are the disulfide bonds – these are very strong chemical bonds (kind of like the rungs of a ladder that keep the proteins in your hair locked in shape. These are very tough to break – think relaxer or straightening treatment. Then there...
