Gastroparesis Awareness Month: A Day In The Life
This is my second post for Gastroparesis Awareness Month.  Read my first post, Tube Love, here.  My first post was a love poem to my feeding tube.  :-)  My second one is a little more serious and a lot longer.  I apologize for the length.  I have trouble reading lengthy posts myself.  But sometimes I’m incapable of summarizing myself, so I have to write posts that are too long for even me to read.  I hope you’ll at least be able to skim through the important parts.  I’ve tried to break up the text with lots of photos, to see if that helps any. A DAY IN THE LIFE My day starts when my morning careg...

What’s a cow got that you ain’t got?
Grains are the seeds of grasses. If you were to take a stalk of 18-inch tall semidwarf wheat, the creation of a genetics laboratory, you can’t eat the roots, nor the stalk, leaves, or husk. You can, however, isolate the seeds, remove the husk, then dry, pulverize, and heat them. You will then have something–porridge or flour–that can yield something you might view as food. But the seed, just like the rest of the plant, has components that are indigestible, such as wheat germ agglutinin, D-amino acids, gliadin (partially digestible), and trypsin inhibitors, among others. The one component that is digestibl...

Gastrointestinal recovery after the wheat battle is won
Josie posted this comment that addresses the issue of bowel health recovery post-grain removal. I have been wheat-free for almost a year now and I no longer fall asleep during the day, and my mental fog has disappeared. My wheat-free life is great! However, I am experiencing major digestion problems. I went to see a dietitian and explained to her I do not eat wheat and try not to eat grains. She emphasized that I need fiber in my diet and based on my current food intake I was not receiving an adequate amount, which was most likely the cause of my digestion problems. She respects that I do not eat wheat, but is encouraging...

A concentrate on positive nourishment should be the purpose of everybody. In creating a balanced food plan as Alexander Simring will significantly benefit you, analysis will be key. Prime Your Brain for a Permanent Performance Gain (in a Few Minutes)
Inside your skull is a massive supercomputer. You own it free and clear. With its 100 billion neurons, and with a typical neuron linking to 1000 to 10,000 other neurons, your highly networked brain is incredibly powerful and capable. Pick up a simple object nearby like a pen or a spoon, and look at it. Turn it upside down. Spin it around. Notice that your brain is able to recognize the object no matter how you position it. You can change the lighting by putting the object in shadow. You can obscure part of it from view. You can bend or break it. And your brain still recognizes that object simply and easily. Even a child ca...

Cindy J.
The success Cindy has seen with her migraines has been well-documented in others. There are some studies available on my site that highlight this. – Dr. Perlmutter I have suffered from migraines for 26 years. They have been debilitating and over the years I have tried everything to prevent them. My neurologist has prescribed an arsenal of drugs, including beta-blockers, anti-depressants, calcium channel blockers, antihistamines and topamax. I tried eliminating triggers from my diet to no avail. I always got a migraine when the pressure dropped and there was a storm. Nothing stopped my weekly headaches. Sometimes I...

Diabetes Australia bungles dietary advice
A Wheat Belly Blog reader passed this exchange between his father and a dietitian representing the Australian Diabetic Association onto me. While nearly all of you are no strangers to the ignorance exhibited by defenders of the dietary status quo, it occasionally helps to hear their arguments articulated. You are readily reminded just how many “holes” there are in their arguments to consume more “healthy whole grains.” My father was a very serious diabetic, but I slowly got him off the wheat last December. Now his diabetes is the best it’s been in 20 years! He was so disappointed with Diabet...

Wheat Belly success stories keep on pouring in!
In my public talks, I point out that the enormous success of the Wheat Belly message has little to do with me, but succeeds because 1) it works, and 2) people share their extravagant successes nowadays via social media and word spreads like wild fire. That’s what has caused the Wheat Belly message to turn the nutritional world topsy-turvy, upsetting dietitians accustomed to talking about “healthy whole grains,” and terrorized people in the grain and milling industries. I never tire of hearing these stories. Not just do people lose the weight they’ve struggled with for years, but they also experienc...

The Chemical Imbalance Myth of Depression - Here are Some Better Explanations
It is time to retire the idea that depression is caused by a “chemical imbalance of the brain.” The chemical imbalance myth creates the false impression that our brains are some form of neurotransmitter porridge that can be rendered just right with squirts of serotonin and dopamine.   Thanks to at least two decades of research, we now have a number of good working models on what tends to go wrong in the brain during a... You don’t know your right from your left
Not knowing your right from your left in nutrition can get you into trouble. In biological systems, there is an issue called “handedness,” or “chirality.” It means that there are right-handed (“Dextrarotatory”) and left-handed (“Levorotatory”) versions of compounds, or “D” and “L” versions, or isomers, much as we have right and left hands, mirror images of each other. But a right-handed glove does not fit on your left hand and vice versa. Likewise, enzymes only recognize one or the other isomer, not both. Mammals are largely L-isomer creatures, due to...

GMO Paranoia And The Hollow Health Claims Of Cheerios
Make no mistake about it. General Mills’ introduction of Cheerios sporting the label “Not Made With Genetically Modified Ingredients” is a mere marketing ploy and has nothing to do with health or nutrition. Let’s start the dissection of this blatant attempt to capitalize on the anti-GMO paranoia by looking at the main ingredient in Cheerios, namely oats. Samuel Johnson, the 18th century writer who compiled the first authoritative dictionary of the English language whimsically defined oats as the grain “eaten by people in Scotland, but fit only for horses in England.” A clever Scot supposedly retorted “...
