The Healthful Vegan Diet
‘Let your food be your medicine, and your medicine be your food.’ ~Hippocrates By Leo Babauta Eat plants. Those two words are the best things I’ve learned about diet, and if you stick to that, you’re likely be pretty healthy. That said, eating a vegan diet (no animal products) doesn’t necessarily equate to a healthy diet, despite what many believe. Yes, vegans on average are healthier and leaner than the average person. But that’s an average — there are unhealthy vegans. How is that possible? You can eat lots of sweets, fried foods, processed foods, foods with white flour (br...

Normal is Varying Degrees of Normal…
Maggie woke me up at a more normal time of 5am this morning. I rolled over, looked at the clock, and unintentionally fell sound asleep again. I woke up at 8am with Maggie snoozing right beside me on the bed. I got Maggie ready for her walk and away we went. We stayed in the neighborhood since the day’s traffic had begun. There would be no long walk to the convenience store today. We did our standard meet and greet with the neighbor’s dogs who were all glad to see us. When we arrived home, I was starving and ate a handful of oatmeal cookies and a tall glass of milk. Maggie wanted some cookies so badly, but I resisted g...

Superfood of the Week: Oats
A hearty bowl of oatmeal with all the fixings has long been a breakfast classic (many of us SELF staffers are known to eat the stuff daily), and with good reason: Oats not only soak up bad cholesterol with their uber high soluble fiber content, but they also work in a variety of dishes, from pancakes and granola all the way to veggie burgers and meatloaf. Whether you grind 'em up for breadcrumbs or toss a handful in a smoothie for extra staying power, oats are one versatile little super-grain. Go crazy for oatmeal with these three unique dishes. A Conversation With My Bone Marrow on Her 10th Birthday
"I suck at being an adult," I said to my bone marrow while we ate our breakfast today: oatmeal prepared on the stove top with ground cinnamon and sliced banana. "Don't be so hard on yourself," my bone marrow replied. "You're a good host, except when you refuse to buy me push-up bras to impress the boy bone marrows." Ten years ago today, on April 24, 2003, I received my umbilical cord stem cell transplant to treat myelodysplasia, my second cancer. My bone marrow donor was an anonymous girl, so my blood has two of the same sex chromosome, XX, instead of XY. I have reared my bone marrow as my child, and my only complaint i...

Tips For An Organized Morning
Mornings can be the most chaotic time of day. One way to make them easier is to evaluate the things you do each morning and look for simple ways to streamline the process. For example, move your keys to a hook near the door so you’re never late because you can’t find them. Keep your phone on a charger overnight so you aren’t scrambling around looking for it on your way out of the house. And what about your breakfast and beverage? Here are some tips to make breakfast (and therefore morning) easier. Cut and cover fruit or put out oatmeal packets in cereal bowls the night before and set a programmable coffee maker ...

The Top 10 Things We Should Tell Our Patients About Weight Loss
In conclusion, obesity underlies most of America’s chronic disease burden but can be reversed with modest weight loss through diet and exercise modifications. Patient adoption of long-term lifestyle changes are challenged by economic factors (e.g. healthy food “deserts” in inner cities), sedentary lifestyles, poor urban planning, excessive fast food and sugary beverage consumption, increasing portion sizes, and high tech conveniences that reduce energy expenditure, among other factors. Patients are more likely to begin weight loss programs if recommended to do so by their physician, though studies suggest...

Hey Ho it’s Grocery Day!
I am going to completely and totally blow my mother’s mind tomorrow in that I typed a grocery list with lots of changes to our usual lineup of groceries we get – groceries we have been getting for years. I am going to print this list out in a second. I get tired of eating the very same things for weeks and years on end to make it easier on my mother. I want to make chicken salad this week and I also want hamburgers. I want Pop-Tarts and my Little Debbie snacks. I usually get 12 Marie Calendars meals a week, but I am going to get 8 this week to soften the blow some. “I’m Lovin’ It!” as they say at McDonald’s.&...

Grocery Day!
I am sitting here waiting on my mother to arrive. It is grocery day and a great day it is! Dozen of foods go through my mind of  what to eat first.  Yesterday, I was down to nothing for last week. I am cooking spaghetti and meat sauce tonight.  I always think of my very special Annabel when I do that. That is one of her favorite foods besides Taco Villa I presume. I am personally hoping for sweet and sour chicken for an afternoon snack. Sometimes, I never know what Marie Callendar meals mom will get me. My only request this week was for soft oatmeal cookies. Wont that be awesome with a cold glass of milk? St...

Aveeno versus Clear: Which is better for your scalp?
Steve F says…I have dermatitis and my dermatologist advised me to use an anti-dandruff shampoo. I like both Aveeno Nourish + Dandruff Control and Clear Complete Care, but I’m wondering which is really better for my scalp. The ingredient lists seem quite different, with Clear’s containing a lot more oil and things I can pronounce. But does this really mean it’s better for me? The Beauty Brains respond: Let’s review the ingredients in each product to see if one is better for your scalp than the other. Active drug ingredient This is a little confusing because the Clear website doesn’t clear...

Aveeno Daily Moisturizing Body Wash: Look at the label
Aveeno Daily Moisturizing Body Wash is the number two best selling beauty product on Amazon.com this week (because it’s on a special promotion.) Let’s look at the label to see what makes it moisturizing. Aveeno Daily Moisturizing Body Wash ingredients Water Solvent for the other ingredients. Is it a moisturizer? I suppose so but you’re already in the freaking shower where there’s plenty of water. Glycerin Is this moisturizer? Sure when it’s left on skin. It doesn’t really do much when rinsed off from a body wash. Unless maybe it’s moisturizing the shower drain. (Hey, that’s a...
